I don’t know the details of what happened to Berto when he was young, but my heart goes out to you bud 😢. It’s great that you’re able to share your story so openly and publicly. Very brave of you and destigmatizing!

Hello. I had made a couple of comments regarding the way you were wording/advertising your patreon. I’ve noticed a change and appreciate it so much. (Have no idea if my comments were read or if this is the reason for your adjustments) but just wanted you to know it makes a big difference. So thank you. I’m a huge fan of you guys and briefly felt like I was less than since I wasn’t a patreon. And after listening to todays episode I was like “hm maybe I do want to become a patreon” because of genuine interest in further discussing these topics. Shows what a difference how things are worded can make. Anyways, thank you for all of your content and for educating us all. The world is so lucky to have you.

These cults make 18-25 year old single adults have the freedom of a 12 year old, and they expect 5-8 year olds to behave like they are a precocious twelve yr old. Can confirm they don't believe in adolescence. I know someone in a former church we used to attend. She and her sister weren't allowed to get a drivers" license until they were 22ish. Also, they were encouraged to work at home and not go to college. Think etsy for crafts, babysitting, teaching piano. One girl got out and decided to go to a community college and become a traveling nurse. I'm curious as to how that went down in that family. Unfortunately, the younger sister who is around 24 (just got her drivers license recently) is still at home babysitting and "homeschooling" a couple of boys who are around 9 and 10ish. It's beyond disturbing. She is quite defensive about staying at home and not attending "college". You know, the evil world out there. She is completely brainwashed. Is living ata home waiting for the right man to marry. And is seemingly proud of the fact she is "modest". Not to be mean, but she has the most horrid fashion sense which is typical. Women are taught this is "godly". Skirts to knees are considered too short. Think long hideous baggy shirts over long heavy skirts and clunky shoes. Walking crimes of fashion. Yes, this still triggers me in middle age. lol

Not sure if they brought it up during patreon or later in the series, but the Duggar’s also used the blanket method. It’s a way to teach obedience. When a baby is able to start crawling, you put them on the blanket, maybe put a favorite toy just out of reach, and every time the baby crawls off the blanket you hit them 😱

27:47 LOL i think Humberto is like me where the word "natural" is a trigger. Ever since the rise of anti-science/anti-medicine that came out of covid, it's super grating to hear people say something is good because it's "natural" or is how humans did things hundreds of years ago. As if human scientific/medical achievements and psychology researched parenting methods are bad because they are newer.

The words “big pharma” trigger me because it is usually followed by the phrase doesn’t want you to know about X, the cure-all someone is hawking. I’ not saying pharmaceutical companies are great, their lies started the opioid epidemic, but we don’t need conspiracy theories in medical care.

My mom grew up in this movement and I was raised in it until I was 14 until my parents really discovered the dysfunction they had been in. My mom went to a school that in order to pass each grade in high school, the students had to attend Bill Gothard’s seminar and my mom actually met him on several occasions. My mom never wore a pair of pants until she was in her 30s. The documentary on the Duggars was very triggering for her.

The anthropologist in me is V I B R A T I N G with the need to go on about early modern human child rearing. (I believe it’s called the basket theory) there’s this one school of thought that the reason humans started making tools and “acting human” is that mothers needed to carry items without letting go of their babies so the use of bags and baskets became one of the first complex tools used. Another point is that lactation is a natural form of birth control (not the most complete but still impacts fertility) so if she wants more children it’s in her best interest to stop breastfeeding as soon as possible.

I didn’t belong to a cult but my mother was a fundamentalist Christian. Some of them believe in public shaming as a deterrent to future undesirable behavior. Apparently, this cult does. It’s very Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorn. Which was a book set in Puritan New England.

All these years and no discussion about who first abused Josh when he was a small child?????
@leora8278 Жыл бұрын
Do they know that he was abused before becoming an abuser? That's not always the case.
@MNP208 Жыл бұрын
@@leora8278 Most often it is. He was around some shady characters in his church. Even with this recent Connexions case, Hidebrandt was abused by her parents - according to the niece.
@leora8278 Жыл бұрын
@MNP208 It is sometimes the case, but I wouldn't assume. It's harmful to survivors of abuse to assume they're all at risk of becoming abusers cuz that's where abusers always come from. Many people who are abused will purposefully break cycles of abuse and make a point to protect other victims. Also this is a pretty well documented, and like they said, Josh was pretty open about what he did and was forced to admit sins publicly. I wouldn't be surprised if it would be considered a sin he had to atone for if he was sexually abused by a man or a married woman. I don't know that he would have hid that considering his openness regarding his actions which according to ythe cult weren't that bad.

Look up “sin in the camp” to see where they get the transference of punishment. It comes from an Old Testament story about a guy named Achan. The Israelites lost a battle and they cast lots and found out is was because Achan had taken some of what they plundered in a previous battle when it was all supposed to go to God. So that’s why they lost the battle. Achan and his entire family and livestock were stoned to death as a result.

Being weaned at 6 months is fairly typical. Handing the baby over to a child to care for at that age is not. Just wanted to note that. It’s not the weaning that was inappropriate or improper, it was delegating the childcare to other children.
@PsychologyInSeattle Жыл бұрын
Yeah, absolutely. There's a wide range of weening age, but handing the child over at 6 months is not recommended.

Guys, have lots of kids. The US Census bureau... Baby boomers all out workforce in 2030-35. Shrinking birth rates. Our population is getting older - our workforce will dry up - and we will have fewer young people to keep it going. Society will make tough calls. It might become a new cool thing to have massive families. Expectations might even back pedal.
