One of the great composers!! I would suggest you read the Book , "The Duke Ellington Reader" ed. Matt Tucker. Oxford Press. It gives a great account of the different periods of his career, the racism and hellish touring schedules and the resistance to his work , "Black, Brown and Beige"suite. Ellington was so influential in music in the 20th Century ...shit , even now he is!

I liked his triple tongue to start that first solo. It was just so perfect.

I am in a grad couse studying the Duke. This is the piece on which I must present in class. This (unfortunately) is my first time hearing it, although I have heard "Come Sunday " performed. Now that I know it is Duke's, I just may record a cover. Anyway, I can see how a more cerebral sound like this would cause some to bristle. However, it is just that - more cerebral than you would expect from the Duke. Nevertheless, this still swings. He did not try to Europeanize it. He let it swing.

If this was recorded in January 1943, then the song would be 50 minutes long. Instead, it's 18 minutes long.

I think this was recorded in January 1943, not December 1944

So far ahead of his time. In the 1940s, this suite was dismissed as being pretentious. By1958, it was recognized as the classic it was. The story of the Black American in song.

More cerebral than you would expect from Duke? Are you serious? Try his Tone Parallel to Harlem, the Shakespearean Suite, the New Orleans Suite, the Far East Suite, the music for Otto Preminger's film, Anatomy of a Murder, and tell me what you think. All the best with your project I hope it goes well for you.
