When karma comes to roost. Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway were the 2 biggest black male performers with pull in the 1930s and 40s and both played the famous Cotton Club. Mr. Calloway used his star power to force the white coloristic Cotton club to allow brown and dark skin female dancers on stage, while the color-struck Duke Ellington did nothing and actually supported the Cotton Club's ban against dark female dancers.
@TheAntoinetteBailey3 жыл бұрын
What I've noticed is a lot of these female stars back then who were considered black were actually mixed and could pass for white. Many of the male stars back then did have a type and those mixed women were and are still to this day their type. That slash on his face was vile though but he should've respected his wife

I heard that his wife caught him in bed with another woman and that she had warned him she would try to kill if she ever caught him cheating, again. I personally don't think it was entertainer, Fredi Washington, just another one of his "women." I also heard that he had an affair with a wealthy white woman that was kept very low key. Great investigating of this story, as you always do. Have a fantastic week. Hugs to Indy and Rocko. Take care 💞

@lexdee5233 жыл бұрын
The part in his autobiography about how he received that scar, he mentioned "a jealous woman" which (to me) is exactly how he got it and that jealous woman was none other than his own WIFE. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. But you've got to admit though, Duke was a fine looking man in his heyday. Having women falling at his feet was no surprise. I think he should've waited on marriage before becoming a playboy. No woman should've had to be put up with his philandering ways and his wife was sure to leave that scar as a constant reminder.
@lwmson3 жыл бұрын
They were high school sweethearts who married when they were 19, and largely because she became pregnant with his first son. I guess in those days, people had to marry in such a situation, because unlike today "baby daddies" weren't permissible back then. But he probably didn't really love her, and as he became older and successful (and attracted scores of beautiful women), he just outgrew their relationship. But it certainly didn't justify her to do what she did.
@lexdee5233 жыл бұрын
@@lwmson I agree 👍

There were plenty of baby daddies back then. Don't be fooled. Just like everybody wasn't living "chaste" as they say. There's nothing new under the sun. The difference between then and now is phone camera's and social media and paparazzi! A lot of children were conceived and born out of wedlock. They just use to "force" marriage back in those days, and many of them didn't last or the cheating and outside babies were just ignored and the beat went on unless the man left and didn't come back or the woman couldn't take it any more.

Yes, this man wanted an open relationship and his wife wasn't having any of it. His wife loved him deeply her heart was broken and although she was a very committed wife and mother. Sharing her husband wasn't apart of her conventional marriage. My thoughts where this man played his part and ran into a woman who wasn't going to play his games she gave him an option to leave his wife too be with her or no side deal's. Besides who knows his new woman from the big picture probably had a toe to toe with the wife in the background by telling his wife how long they where together as well as all the women he's sleeping with. (Who knows they might have had a love child together) and the wife needed to understand that he's never going to stop and she didn't force him to step to her as one of his many mistress and she wasn't going anywhere soon. Maybe that's the reason for that love lick cut on his face. His wife said that's it. Seemed he cared for his wife he just didn't know how to commit to his wife because he allowed the fame, and beautiful women overwhelming his reality of who was his backbone before all the fame. This goes to show how and why many men step outside their matrimonial home. Duke Ellington with his match with his last mistress for him to stay committed to her and not his wife. Who knows is a new mistress probably was okay with him being intimate with other women and he probably was okay with her being intimate with other men. No strings attached for say. As you said will never know. I love this article because I didn't even know the Duke Ellington was this type of ladies man breaking his wife heart and his son. This is a heartbreaking and educational story about the real life short story of Duke Ellington. Thank you for educating my mind.

After reading what Duke Ellington's son Mercer said about his father and the mistress, I wonder if the Duke and his son Mercer discussed the relationship? As far as the Duke's wife Edna, evidentally she was aware of the Duke's behavior possibly from day one. She could have just left and divorced. He did not prosecute her. The mistress had sense enough to keep it moving and did not turn back. Edna did not have confidence in herself. When you said high school sweethearts that is precisely what it is and many people outgrow that. She was probably security for him starting out in the strained entertainment world and probably could not see it right away.

Oh my goodness, she looks like my mother. I love Duke Ellington music praises to my grandfather's best friend for introducing me to the great genre of Jazz. Billy Strayhorn was a true genius at his craft.

During the late 1920's (she was born in 1903), Fredi Washington was part of the Greenwich Village scene in NYC. There was one admirer who suggested that she "pass" or move to Europe where the racial restrictions wouldn't be as pronounced in films. I doubt that would've worked after January, 1933 when Hitler became Chancellor of Germany and Jews were hounded out of films and theatre. I don't know what her fortunes would've been in Fascist Italy where Mussolini was already in power by 1922, but they definitely would've gone south after 1938 when he allied with Hitler, and perhaps earlier in 1936 with his attack on Ethiopia. France might have been a possibility, but Josephine Baker was already making films there. The U.K. was a possibility, but they had somewhat of a "color bar". It's one of those questions we will never be able to answer. Yes, Fredi Washington appeared as the character, Peola, in 1934's, "Imitation of Life". She also had a bit part in, "The Emperor Jones" (was that 1933?) as a rough, tough woman called, "Ondine", who was Paul Robeson's girlfriend in a scene involving a nightclub fight (if you ever see this movie, note that one of the young Nicholas Brothers is in the nightclub dance scene). According to Donald Bogle in his book, "Toms, Coons Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks", it appeared as though Washington's skin was darkened with makeup in this movie to make her appear to be more "coarse" for this role (sort of like the artist darkening O.J. Simpson's skin in the picture on the cover of the news magazine, Time or Newsweek, after he was named as a suspect in the double murder). I know that Washington did musical short in the '30's like, "Black and Tan" with Duke Ellington and, "Hi De Ho", with Cab Calloway in which she featured in a showcase number, "The Lady with the Fan". She also appeared in a sort of horror voodoo movie entitled, "Ouanga" from the same period. In this movie she plays a landowner/plantation owner on an island in the Caribbean who uses voodoo to keep her white lover from a white woman to whom he's attracted. She went back to stage work toward the end of the 1930's because it was hard for her to procure roles worthy of her talent and beauty in Hollywood. She should've been cast as a "romantic lead" because of her looks, but in Jim Crow America that was an impossibility, and it was still happening in the '80's and '90's, I understand, with actresses like Jayne Kennedy, etc. In Fredi Washington's case, I'm happy that her life seemed to turn out all right and that she married a professional. Something similar happened with another attractive Black actress named Teresa Harris from the same era. She had been nicknamed, "the beautiful maid", because of the roles she had to play and the broad southern plantation dialect she was forced to use (I don't recall Fredi Washington ever speaking this way). Harris left films and married a doctor.

These cheating men are ridiculous.....just stay single!
@roseadamant2 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of recent news of an NFL player who allegedly arranged for at least two women to stay in different rooms of a single hotel. Comments on Twitter disputed whether or not these women knew of each other…or if he was running back and forth to meet them. Times change but some things remain the same!

This was good, I never knew this about Duke Ellington! You should do a video on the relationship between Chaka Khan and Ike Turner. James Brown's affair with Tammi Terrell is an interesting but sad story. Another good one would be Rick James and Linda Blair.
