Paul Gonsalves is my first cousin once removed on my mom's side. She said he used to come to Norwich, CT.and visit the family when he was on the East Coast.

Lawrence Brown, trombone; Russell Procope, clarinet; Harry Carney, baritone sax; Paul Gonsalves, tenor sax; Sam Woodyard, drums; John Lamb, bass; Duke Ellington, piano I especially like the way the trio of Brown, Procope and Carney blend to create the “Ellington sound.”

The older I get the more I respect Ellington and Basie not only as musicians but bandleaders who kept many people employed and hopefully earning a living wage in a time when few people of color had that opportunity, especially as musicians.

There's another vid with the trio being played with 2 trombones and no "regular" clarinet. One of the all-time great tunes in the history of mankind!

Lawrence Brown! He had such a beautiful sound. The best I'd say on trombone, ever.

Brown hated to play muted "Jungle Style", but the fact tat he was as good as Tricky Sam Nanton or Quentin Jackson with the mutes. When he played "open", by the way, he was the greatest of all trombonists!
