They dont need to make duke human because duke nukem universe from DN64 seems to be very light heared and slightly humorous, but they did make duke nukem a ridiculous caricature in original duke nukem forever from gearbox. they turned an unserious character in DNF into some kind of weird wish fulfillment realistic sex-obssessed cult guru. Somebody did too much coke and thought it was a good idea. Duke should feel like a regular guy who happens to enjoy boobs, boobs should not be the point of the experience. Also duke nukem is based on action movies of 80s and 90s. I think DNF missed that aspect of the narrative where the protagonist was always a nobody who ends up in the middle of a event and saves the day.

Indeed, I honestly thought him acting like a badass was more of a facade and to see a duke that is human, that really connects the player to the character a whole lot.

Gearbox got so sucked into the "Tough guy" parody thing that they forgot that Duke is, at his core, an actual hero and instead just made him this arrogant meathead cause i guess thats whats cool to them lol Its like they didnt realize the reason he is a beloved celebrity is BECAUSE he saved so many people XD

Well he's not named Duke Huggem. He's mainly a typical western hero, who is sort of a vigilante who goes outside of the system to protect people and restore society.

To think, if this game was finished and came out when it should have, Duke Nukem could still have been a viable franchise for another decade.
@YouTubsel Жыл бұрын
I think at this time 3DR may had already dropped the ball on Duke's Personality changes. Honestly - finishing this is still a shit ton of work and if only the first 25% of the game actually come out of this as a cohesive state it will be amazing. Yet - the thing I like most about all this is that the fans seem to care that Duke is not a pure egoistical, sexist cringefest of a character. And that it's not funny to crank all his bad traits only up to 12.

@0:37 A Johnny Bravo reference? That's pretty neat. Wasn't expecting them to throw that in. The dedicated fanbase really has done the series proud. With so much negligence over the years it seemed the series was destined to gather dust. Thanks to the fanbase the saying "Always bet on Duke" still rings true after all.

Somehow I've just gotten in the habbit of wearing black pocket T's and jeans all the time, and my hair, as I get older, tends to stick straight up, and is still light and not gray, but can look blond in the sun. "this duke seems like a response to the duke from the retail dnf" actually it's pretty on point with duke's original character pre-dnf 2011, while duke cracked jokes and movie references even in the face of danger, he genuinely did care about the well being of people of earth (one of the reasons why being able to kill pedestrians for their horrible singing in nuclear felt out of character),of course in 3d his main concern was the woman as the cycloid's main mission was the kidnap and harvest all of earth's women
@Batchall_Accepted11 ай бұрын
This was the first red flag for me when i originally played Retail DNF. I felt like I was playing as some weird impostor Duke or something. Nukem is supposed to be if John Rambo had the personality of James Bond, not some frat boy with a handgun. I guess the gearbox devs were trying to create a character they could identify with :-/

They gave him a lot of character in Manhattan Project too, hes all bravado but it gets dropped in certain parts when a bystander is strapped to a bomb or when morphix tries to derail a subway train, and he gets this "ok now im actually mad" tone to his lines that i enjoyed a lot. Dukes best when hes this charismatic, larger than life dude who feels like someone who would actually want to be around, like if your favorite comedian one day single handedly stopped a terrorist attack. In 'Forever', Gearbox gave us this weird narcissistic prick who makes you wonder why everyone loves him so much. Hes supposed to be James Bond with a gym membership

I've never had any attachment to Duke Nukem in any way but I've followed the saga of the series with interest because...well...I understand how it feels to just want something you love and care for to be treated *properly*. When something means something to you, all you really want is for the people whose hands it's in to care about it like you do, and it's been obvious for a while that the only people who seem to really care about the DN franchise is the fans. It warms the cockles of my heart that the fanbase is giving a big FU to the studios and are like, "you know what, if you can't handle this, we'll do it ourselves!" Now THAT is community 💚

This is such a testament to what's possible when a project is about passion and not money. Can't wait to see them sued for making the game that 3DRealms/Gearbox couldn't
@neonhalos3 ай бұрын
one could argue that the original DNF *was* about passion... in the wrong way. they kept putting *too* much into each build and restarting over and over again whenever new tech came out to make it "the best it could be." obviously, that led to what we ended up getting where they had to sell shit to get it to launch. it was a money sink and cost 3DRealms boatloads of cash over time and no one recouped on those losses. i'd say the retail version of DNF was bad because it was handed off to a team to finish it that had no real stake in duke's history or characterization. plus, the original dev team probably self-flanderized over the years without realizing it, as they essentially kept remaking the same game and rewriting the story over and over.

You should play Manhattan Project. Theres several points in it where he actually gets kinda serious and each time its due to civilians being in danger. In fact one of the objectives in each level is to save a hostage strapped to a bomb. Im glad to see theyre characterizing him similarly in this one. It makes him more human, like the jokes and shit are a coping mechanism for what hes having to deal with on the daily.

Duke 3D was really fun back in the day, both the single player and deathmatch (since we had all those BNC/coax network cards from playing DOOM). I'd say it was more fun than DOOM in that regard, with the zany weapons. I begged Apogee/3DR to allow us to "play dead" in multiplayer, which I thought would have added another dimension, but the rep shot me down and wouldn't even suggest it to the designers.
