Playing this game on the final day, seeing a countdown appear above of your head saying “god is coming!” And all of the squirrels and wild creatures chanting, knowing that god is about to slaughter the one that killed dozens of their of their own.

my favorite part about this game is how the static of the camera's monitor can really make you interpret something that might or might not be there. if you ever seen the movie "Blow Up" it has a very similar experience to this.

On the plus side: KQ2 is (slightly) less obtuse than the first game, has a (slightly) clearer game design, tells (slightly) more of a story with it's characters, has (slightly) more interactivity with the text parser, and even solves an issue the first game had: you could be robbed blind by the Dwarf in KQ1 without having any opportunity to gain plot critical items back, and while the little git will rob you blind in KQ2 as well, you can actually go to his home in the tree after he does so, and find all your items. You can do this any time he steals from you. This is definitely an improvement. Unfortunately, it still isn't overall a better game where it really matters. And that bridge puzzle is, of course, agony.

The 'diagonal movement is mapped to page down etc' might seem obtuse, but it's actually because on the old keyboards, movement was via the numpad keys - and those buttons were double-mapped to the diagonal numpad keys. Using a 9 digit numerical pad for full degrees of player movement was obviously very intuitive, but it also means some modern computers that don't have a numpad simply don't have the same functionality as the old computer of 1984. Yes, it's frustrating. But it makes sense in context. 🤣

The remake of the game that Sierra put out about 5 years later using their more advanced SCI game engine took the opportunity to give the player ways to bypass or at least better understand the more obscure puzzles of the original. The crashed spaceship actually has the survival kit and pieces of broken glass in the sand outside, with the glasa helpfully glittering in the sun to make it super obvious. It's made easier to force the spider droid to encounter Orat (the original game requires a very specific set of events to happen to make sure Orat is triggered inside the cave at the same time the spider is chasing you; the remake just spawns Orat in the cave all the time). The arcade Skimmer sequence can be skipped, as can the fruit machine in the Bar (through use of a magnet you can find back at the start of the game). While these quality of life changes don't really change the overall game, they do make some of it's more 'ambiguous' puzzles easier to figure out. It's still possible to go into the caverns without picking up the glass shard in this remake, but if you don't try to pick up the now super obvious glass pieces that literally sparkle for you, then it's more the player's own fault than in the original. 🤣

The funniest thing is in Space Quest 4, which is a VGA graphics game (256 colors), you go back in time to Space Quest 1 - but when you go back the graphics suddenly switch to EGA (16 colors). Only your character remains a 256 color sprite. Then in the Cantina at Ulence Flats, there's an alien gang called the "Monochrome Boys" who make fun of you for being in fancy 256-color VGA graphics.
@charlessalvia7176Күн бұрын
I recall you can bypass the whole gambling thing in the cantina using a device called a "widget" which hacks the slot machine. But I forgot how you get this device (or maybe this was only in the VGA remake?)

I cna see a couple other points that make space quest a better experience than the ing's quest games: -a lot of the humour is jsutified by the fact that roger wilco is genuinely a random shlub, a janitor who happens to be the hero cause he's literally the only one aware of the situation who isn't dead. it also plays into the humour because, since he IS a bumblefuck janitor and not a badass here, he's a bit of a screwup and belieavbly prone to doing silly shit, so having him andomly find out about where the abd guys are causee he got wasted at the bar and tripping and ruinning his disguise make sense. It also means he's, well, a more interesting character. the protag of king's quest 1 and 2 is supposedly a charming dude who's very clever, but the game doesn't really give him much of a personality since he doesn't speak and he's still farly bland as a hero. But roger Wilco actually comes across as a fun, interestign character BECAUSE he's treated as a bit of a loser because he's a janitor. -another thing that helps this game is that it has a actual villain to thwart and not jsut random bullshit that act as villains in a way but don't really have a role in the actual story beyond being obstacles as in king's quest 1 and 2. The Sariens are well established as the main threat, are belieavbly threatening and give you a clear goal: stop the bad guys from killin people and blowing up planets for no reason.

at 15:47, you didn't actually screw yourself over, in a rare bit of mercy, the spiderdroid can be defeated by luring it into the orat and having them kill each other, so you could have still continued that game, i think maybe it only works after the other aliens tell you to kill the orat, but it IS possible. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIK6kIxvp96marMsi=LNGxiXS9VxzofrHk&t=738

As a linguistics enthusiast, I cracked the language long before I got anywhere near the meat of the game. Playing became an incredibly frustrating journey of finding a new page, translating it, attempting to use the knowledge on the pages, and being shut down by the game because Now Isn't The Time. Tunic is far and away my favorite puzzle wrapped up in my least favorite game. It's so cool to see the parts of the game I missed, and how they would have naturally led from one to another. I wish I could MIB flashy-thingy myself and get a second go.

I played DS3 just so I could complete the trilogy. But yeah Co-Op destroys all tension. It did one thing cool and that is the 2nd player added story bits. But at the same time it kind of makes the main character just kind of sit and spin while player two has to go through their personal story moment.
