YESTERDAY WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD OF THIS MAN AND I LIVE HERE IN HAWAII. I HAVE NOW SEEN AT LEAST 100 VIDEOS OF HIM. I TOLD ALL MY HAWAIIAN FRIENDS HERE THAT I DISCOVERED HIM.

I had never heard of this man until yesterday, when Google honored him with a Google Doodle for his 125th birthday. I would like to learn more about him now.

Did that TV anchor think he was superior than Duke. Calling him boy a lot.
@lindastrauss77782 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so. What’s wrong with calling him a Hawaiian boy referring to him when he was young? That is as normal as can be.

I m pretty sure Sam Kahanamoku was a teacher at my school that would be in Kona late sixties and early 70s Konawaena high school class of 1971

Why didn't Duke Volunteer to Fight in the Great War? He knew Europe well after winning a gold medal in Stockholm.
@Bonnieham3 жыл бұрын
You would have had to ask him that, but since he was a full blooded Hawaiian, and the USA overtook the Hawaiian monrchy system with an illegal coup, I wouldn’t have expected him to. I was upset that the presenter kept calling him the boy and even had the gall to congratulate him for being an American, but this show was well before the civil rights movement on the mainland, or the sovereignty movent in Hawaii. I enjoyed watching it because Duke was so laid back and still expressed his aloha, despite the crass pressentaion.

+Elizabeth Sinding I remember doing some outdoor security lighting on this beautiful home on D.H. around 1988. the lady owner said she was the widow of one of the beachboys of Waikiki. When we were "pao" with her lights she invited us in and showed us all these great surfin, paddlin, gear that was mounted on the walls. She was still a beautiful lady.

Where's the story of Duke beating the shit out of someone that made the mistake of paddling out in a LOCAL lineup? Oh there is none? That's cause he's a legend. Don't build a statue of a man who's values and aloha you refuse to follow. RIP Duke. The surfing world owes you everything
@Pochonesian2 жыл бұрын
Well really only Hawaiians did surfing back then. Most surfers now couldn’t even carry out the 120lb wooden board that duke used. Also it’s seldom a “mistake” when surfers cut off other surfers. It means they aren’t paying attention. Now ask us Hawaiians if we would ever fly up to aspen and cut in line on the ski slopes. Nope.

The casual patronizing attitude of the host toward the little brown island boy and his family is just cringe-worthy. It's even visible in how some of the white guests interact with Duke.
@COMMANDOF4F46 жыл бұрын
NOW THAT COMMENT IS A BUNCH OF BULL SHIT. I GREW UP IN THOSE TIMES AND USED TO WATCH THIS SHOW ALL THE TIME. THE HOST TREATED HIM WITH GREAT LOVE AND KINDNESS.
@lindastrauss77782 жыл бұрын
This is a different time. We probably have no idea what it was like to live back then. They were totally honoring him. It’s ridiculous how people these days love to nitpick and try to find racism where it’s not.
@Bluesbabesrv9 жыл бұрын
Some of this seems a bit disrespectful and racist. Got the US history of the islands wrong also. You can tell they all said what was written for them by some Hollywood writer.The host is a jerk! Feel sorry for Duke and his family.

Duke Kahanamoku was no ones pet. While I understand and respect everyone's sentiment, we must consider the times, this was before the tumult of the civil rights era or the reemergence of the Hawaiian culture. Best to watch this as a period piece. This was a real surprise event and Duke handled it really well. His dry sense of humor shined through.. Duke was very well known and hung out with the best of Hollywood's elite. And Ralph Edwards did many shows like this, he was not a jerk. He knew exactly who he was presenting on the show.
