Great show buddy! I sure do miss the DMIR! I'll never forget the day we spent up there in the bitter cold shooting it, I'm so glad we did!! Some of those scenes sent shivers down my old spine!!

2:01 is 5 minutes away from my house. That trains running behind the McDonalds, Holiday, and the Country Inn which I think is now a Best Western. I love living in this area!

Even though it isn't DMIR maroon anymore, there are still some great power sets on these trains. Thank you for watching!

Sorry, I meant to write my great grandfather (Robert Murphy) was the mining superintendent at the Buhl open pit mine. He worked there around the turn of the century right around the 1890s through the 1930s. My grandfather and many of my uncles worked at that mine also!! My mother and her sisters grew up in Buhl and use to talk about it all the time. They said my grandfather would come home from work so dirty you could only see the whites of his eyes!! That must have been an awful job working outside in that terrible weather!!

Can someone tell me about taconite pellets? I have found hard heavy ones on the RR road tracks (purpleish black) and a pile of light weight (orange, rusty, slightly bigger) ones at a lake. Do the pellets retain their shape after the iron has been extracted and they become slag? I would think the slag would be glassy chunks but these puffy orange pellets seem to be low in iron content, 4% is plenty to account for the orange color in an oxidation environment.
@privatepyle25203 жыл бұрын
The pellets actually contain very high concentrations of iron, greater than raw iron ore itself. The taconite ore is crushed and then the iron is extracted with magnets, before being formed into pellets. As a result, iron does not need to be extracted from the pellets and they retain their shape and do not become slag. These pellets are what goes directly into the blast furnaces.

If my memory serves me correctly, didn't the DM&IR have ALCOs?
@whiteknightcat6 жыл бұрын
They had several Alco-built steam locomotives but in the diesel era, they only rostered four. These were second-hand UP C630's 2900, 2902, 2903, and 2904 which were re-numbered by deleting the leading 2 in the numbers. They were received in 1973, were never re-painted, and were re-sold after only three years. Aside from those, the DMIR had an all-EMD fleet, either original or second-hand.

When they were used, what type of cabooses did they use? Same as the B&LE(bay window)?
@whiteknightcat5 жыл бұрын
A variety of cupola type cabooses were used. Use Google image search with the term DM&IR caboose to find pictures, or search rrpicturearchives.net
