From what I’ve read, the MRL let themselves be absorbed by BNSF. The line itself is now operated by BnSF

At 7:10 its passing beside SIdestreet Pizza in Tryon NC. I was in the bar there a few times when the train came by and shook the building. The building is very close to the tracks about 20 or 30 feet. That was way back in the mid 90's. Its sad to see all the lines that are going by the wayside. I kind of understand with the reduction in rail traffic up that way. No more coal going to the power plants. At one time they had a bunch of aluminum coal cars to lighten the load up Saluda. No more wood chips going up there either to the paper mill. Its a sign of the times. Years ago many factories had rail service. Its not that way any more. Im sick of seeing double stacked intermodal and auto racks.

I just noticed that the engine leading the Santa Fe train at 13:15 is GP60m #144. That engine was involved in a runaway wreck on Cajon Pass on December 14, 1994, and was scrapped after the incident.

The lack of 3 step and going in-between during some of those switching scenes makes me wince a bit in horror lol. Sure used to be a lot different on the railroad back then, its neat to see it preserved on film.

It seems to me this line would be useful in north Carolina now. It seems short sighted to discontinue service here.

in 1972 the plan to de-electrification was just a Nail in the Casket for the CMstP&P few other American railroads had electrification routes the New Haven and Pennsylvanian road are the best known in the East The South shore in Indiana to Chicago and some of Illinois Central in Chicago Commuter lines. The Milwaukee Road was a Big step in the Western US Long live the Milwaukee Road
@brendenoneill30685 күн бұрын
Very nice and for 70s Great Quality video So sad that CMstP&P Railroad suffered a slow Bleeding Death. The Milwaukee Road was Top level with Electric Locos in Western states, Just a Gab split the two Electrified lines and the gap was Never filled. by 1970 the old Equipment needed to be replaced but the suites just Dieselized the District leading to a Final Bankruptcy in 1978 era. This Road did Not Die It was Murdered by the Suites from within. William John Quinn President of Milwaukee road largely killed the road as a way to benefit his former friends at CB&Q Now BN. Milwaukee Road could have competed with the new BN road but Quinn and other suites IN charge did what they could to Strangle Milwaukee from inside. in 1978 the road was in Bankruptcy the road would finally die in Early 1986. A tragic end to a fine American Railroad. The CMstP&P was killed by other roads as was the Rock Island railroad in same time period. Both could thrive but powers like UP-BN- C&NW etc... + ICC just strangled these railroads until there life was sucked out and a corps was all that remained. ICC killed several companys Penn Central is best Example The CMstP&P will not be Forgotten BN is no more C&NW is no more Now it is BNSF and UP CMstP&P could have been a member of some railroad but it is broken up into 4 sections after 1980s

Some of those locomotives were truly filthy. I thought some of them were ex-Penn Central in the first shot, until I noticed the slightest sliver of silver! Why did they get so dirty? Was it the coal dust and exhaust smoke?
@CVisionProductions15 күн бұрын
Your guess is correct. Those old U-Boats were just a bit too smoky to keep clean. Not sure how much coal dust would have been a factor, but it’s possible that it contributed. Thank you for checking out the video.

We do recall that, yes. From our understanding, there were multiple. Considering how steep the grade was, the safety record was still very impressive, especially in the Norfolk Southern era. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Some excellent backwoods railroading! We're pretty fortunate that Dan didn't miss much. I'm glad he took the time to get a few CNW trains up there. It would have been easy to skip that with the other cool stuff he was grabbing, not too mention SD40-2's would have been a drag compared the CNW Alcos from a few years earlier.

44:30 Totally do not blame the ES&L for putting that up. I'd do the same if a bunch of foamers stole items off my Baldwin Sharks. Too bad it's still prevalent among foamers stealing horns and number boards regularly today.
