FSU might as well just shut down the football program now. Seriously. They went from 13-0 to not even getting into the playoff to losing a bowl game 63-3 to suing the ACC to getting slapped down in said lawsuit to 0-2 and their season (and the meaningful part of Norvell's coaching career) being over already. Reminds me of the Falcons dying as a franchise after 28-3, but at least the next season they made the playoffs again and actually won a game. No, seriously, that was a thing. IDK if I've ever seen a single game devastate, decimate and destroy any college team this rapidly and thoroughly and I'm 51. Clemson's actually in the same situation (they also sued the ACC) but at least it took them a couple of years to implode.

@@DolFan316 The next closest I have ever seen was 1997 Texas. The Longhorns were coming off a Big XII championship upset of Nebraska and had a lot of their talent coming back (including future Heisman winner Ricky Williams) and they lost an early game 66-3 to UCLA. They wound up 4-7 and replaced their coach with Mack Brown the following season.

@@aaronholcomb237 *I REMEMBER THAT GAME!!!* And come to think of it you're right, that seemed to render them irrelevant for the next 6-7 years or so. But even then they still won at least 9 games a season during that stretch. I'm not sure FSU is ever winning 9 games in a season again.

Yes, but they're working only on mathematical probability and don't actually have a feel for a game. Norvell knew his O-line and his QB were not playing well. The analytics are working on average probability. Florida State's offense was not playing average, but well below average, and you can't just assume they will play to their ability on the next play.

Just wanted to let everybody know that while at Memphis, Norvell was 0-4 in bowl games and his successor is currently 3-0. I had nothing against Norvell personally or his decision to leave, but trust me when I say he could've and should've won a lot more at Memphis than he did. Aside from one great season Norvell was constantly finding ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Also, FSU plays Memphis next. I cannot make this stuff up. I honestly think Memphis can take them.

Analytics is great for getting a baseline of decisions to make, but you need to take the flow of the game into consideration. Analytics says to go for it but it didn't take into account that you have a low conversion rate. EV should also taken into account with the probability of you scoring if you make the conversion vs the probability BC scores if you fail. I imagine that value would favor BC making the risk not worth it. Coaches really would do well to learn about bayesian probability.

Florida State is an undisciplined team. When the outcome of the game had been decided, you can see FS players showboating during the last few minutes of the game. I can understand if your team is tied or down by 1 position, but during trash time who are you showing off for ?? How Florida State hired an incompetent head coach like Mike Norvell is the reason. A home opener at your own field and the stands were half empty. How could FS lose to Boston College ?? FS would lose to a Florida High School team.

It's about to get worse. Just wait until officials start openly and blatantly following the ACC's instructions to screw over FSU in conference games knowing they sued the ACC and now have no chance to win it. I'm not even trying to be mean either, in 3-4 more weeks I'll likely be in the same boat for the same reasons (putrid O-line) because I can easily see my team starting 0-3, maybe 0-4. I suggest you start spending time with friends and loved ones to ease the pain.

You don't even need to defend your position against analytics here. A coach has to have a feel for the game and realize when a risk is worth it and when it is not. Nothing was working for FSU offensively. I put it more on the O-line than on DJU, not that he was playing well either. But Norvell was in a position where his defense was far more likely to make a play to turn the game than his offense was. A computer at ESPN is working on generalities and doesn't know how poorly you are executing or how dreadful your OL is performing, it only know the law of averages. And nothing about FSU's offense was average on that night. Punting right there is the obvious, common-sense move. And Norvell was a coward for hiding behind analytics and not just saying he made a bad decision. He owned the loss but he also needed to own this play.

The analytics community has degenerated into a bunch of woke hipster nerds who not only consider themselves experts on every conceivable life subject, but insist that anyone who disagrees with them about anything is stupid and probably evil. In other words, they're now essentially the same as pink haired, tatted up millennials on twitter. That was such a desperate move and it wasn't necessary. The Noles' offense hadn't run the ball well all night and D.J. Uiagalelei wasn't a whole lot better. With 2 conference losses and a tough non-conference slate (Charleston Southern aside) coming up, I'm wondering if the Noles are even gonna qualify for a bowl in 2024.

Im 50/50 with this. In the moment it certainly looked bad, but giving context to the situation, boston college was averaging over 5 yards a carry. They easily couldve killed the clock on the way to making it a 2 score game. But also giving context, DJ Uworkadoordash is your quarterback here. Part of me would rather trust the defense who was getting killed on the ground too😂

Florida State's plan was clearly to "flip the field" by having the QB punt the ball to BC with his arm, rather than have the punter do it with his leg. Genius...except for the fact that (A) the QB's arm didn't have nearly the power of a punter's leg and (B) they gave up a big return!

He honestly wasn't that much of an influence as I believe after Travis went down, they were going to be kicked from the playoffs, they certainly did not deserve a playoff spot over Georgia at the very least.
