When this play failed (to my delight, as an Eagles fan), I actually said out loud, “Welcome to Dumb Decisions.” There was a lot of talk right then and there about McCarthy not challenging the spot. But I agree that not many people seemed to appreciate how much a comedy of errors this whole sequence was. The non-challenge. The decision to go for it at your own 35 when your opponent has a Pro Bowl kicker. And maybe most overlooked, the unconscionable play call. This was a classic Dumb Decision.

McCarthy also did this in Week 17 2020 against the Giants. A Giants WR caught a "pass" that was obviously incomplete and put the Giants in field goal range, and he didn't challenge, allowing the Giants to make a 50-yard field goal to go up 4. Dallas ended up losing after turning the ball over in the red zone when had he challenged and the call was overturned, the Cowboys would be in a position to make a game-winning field goal there.

The Steelers had 2 awful 4th and inches calls in the same game when they played the Jaguars in the playoffs nearly 5 years ago. The 1st one was an ill advised pitch to Leveon Bell that forced him to pick up an extra 5 yards and the run ended up getting stuffed for a turnover on downs in the 1st quarter. The 2nd came in 4th quarter when Ben Roethlisberger inexplicably threw a deep pass that fell incomplete when they only needed an inch to keep a potential game tying drive alive.

Ok, so I've gone back and watched it in slow motion. I think this was a "clever play" that they had planned for this moment during the week. That would explain the speed in which they ran it, they probably were like, "It's 4th and short, hurry, run the play." It's kind of clever actually. The play broke down because they had WR Noah Brown assigned to block blitzing LB Reddick, which he failed miserably. So Reddick got through, pressured Rush, and Brown ran into Lamb, which slowed him down enough for the Eagles to pick him up preventing the easy 3 yard dump off pass. This lead to Rush passing to the rookie TE Hendershot that really shouldn't be in this position. If they had reversed Brown and Hendershot, the play probably would've worked but they probably were thinking this way the Eagles will think the run is to the left where the TE had lined up. Over thinking during the week, and no thinking during the game.

I say this because I'm a Raider fan and I am hoping that Marc Davis will smell the coffee and fir Josh McDaniels before the entire season is lost. You do know that his forearm touching the ground is the moment he's down, right? The rule is that any part of the body, apart from the bottom of the feet or the hand not holding the ball touching the ground, qualifies as a downed player. You know that, right? "Before his knee hits the ground". Oh. You didn't know that. Well, shucks. Don't get me wrong. It would have still been better to throw it than not. But, it isn't as cut and dried as you're claiming. When his forearm hit, his reach was almost a ball length behind where it ended up, upon his completed fall. Was he across? Yeah. I think he was. And, I'm saying that as an Eagles fan. But, this is one that you're blowing entirely out of proportion.
@kyleolson89772 жыл бұрын
In fact, going further, considering that there's at least a reasonable argument that it was a close call, it's seems far more of a mistake to declare it the dumbest decision ever. Official JaguarGator9" is stuck in black and white thinking. 100% right and 100% wrong. Consider that he says this: "There's no risk of throwing the flag here..because the play is so blatantly obvious that there's no way in the world it wouldn't be overturned." How often after the refs don't overturn a play do we sit here saying "what was he looking at?". There's always risk it won't be overturned. OJG9 can say he's engaging in hyperbole, but he doesn't understand game theory. Throwing the flag is a risk. There's a benefit and and a downside. Mike McCarthy may have had the numbers wrong, but there are plenty of worse decisions, like punts when a team should go for it, that go unnoticed because we don't know the odds. And by throwing the flag McCarthy might immediately giving up the opportunity to run the pass because the defense is where he wants them. And complaining about the play is a misunderstanding of odds. Let's just say that the one foot run is actually 100% successful. Does that mean you should go for the run for sure? Well, no. The goal of the Cowboys is not to get the next first down. It's to win the game by scoring points. Gaining 1 foot gets you a new set of downs, 1 foot closer to scoring. There's a chance that you don't get a first down or get anywhere. On the other hand, the pass over "10 yards down the field", as OJG8 goes on about, gets you a new set of downs past where the next first down line would be. That pass might be far more likely to get you a score, especially if your opponent expects you to run. And with game theory there isn't necessarily a right call 100% of the time. If someone doesn't get game theory it's hard to explain, but there right decision in a situation might be Play A 80% and Play B 20%. You have to choose some random method to choose between A and B that your opponent can't predict. If you always choose A, then your opponent does not have to plan for B and A is a worse play. But fans believe that there's always one right play. So, anyway, I only came to the video because I assumed that OJG9 didn't understand something. He could figure it out, and he might as he gets older, but for now he's stuck in black and white thinking. But getting views on KZbin has a way of making people less self-critical.

McCarthy often makes me wonder how he's still a head coach. The Cowboys often win in spite of him (see the 2021 win at the Patriots as an example). He can't rely on being bailed out by high-end talent. As for the play in this game, he should've had someone look at the replay before going forward. Even if he has Dak Prescott throw a pass there, it still would've been a dumb decision because there was no need to go for it based on what we know now.

I disagree with this completely. One, you don't want to waste a challenge on something that obvious that early in the game , especially when you only have to get one foot. Two, he had gone for it on 4th down in several similar situations in Green Bay in which they converted, almost none of them a sneak by Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers converted several 4th downs with similar calls. Nobody called it stupid then. In fact, he initally had the underneath route open and the QB missed it because he waited too long. It was a tight window, but it was doable. The dumb decision was by the QB, not McCarthy,
