Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST TIMEOUT EVER | Eastern Michigan @ Arizona State (2022)

Herm Edwards is no longer the head coach at Arizona State following an upset loss to Eastern Michigan. And if there's any one play that sums up his tenure with the Sun Devils the best, it was his awful timeout called at the end of the first half of that game, which he had no logical reason to call. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

Herm Edwards of all people should know the dangers of running a play when you don't have to run a play...he was the cornerback who scored the winning touchdown for Philadelphia in the "Miracle at the Meadowlands", which legitimized the quarterback kneel (which was previously seen by some as dishonorable, and furthermore, at the NFL level, the rule that allowed the QB to immediately end the play by kneeling didn't exist so the defense still had to contact the ball carrier to end the play even when he was giving himself up) and led to the creation of the "victory formation" in which to run said QB kneel.

Technically the best case option in option 2 is special teams makes the return guy fumble and they rumble it into the end zone to cut it to a 3 point game. If you're going to call a spade a spade, call it both ways. That's technically the best case scenario for option 2

I love that this isn't even the dumbest punting decision made by an ASU coach in the last 20 years. That goes to Dirk Koetter deciding that in the final seconds of a game against USC, on 4th down that he had better odds of USC muffing the punt than actually getting the first down. USC just didn't put a return man out and won the game

I like Herm as a man/person. That said with the timeout explanation, hopefully he said his explanation wrong. I thought we got the 1st down and I called them timeout to fast. With that he should have been fired when the violations hit. His boss too. Hiring your client? He should have been fired then. A ex-agent as an AD? No they'll never have any violations. Anyway you could tell Herm was checked out from how he ran his program since last year. He should have stayed on TV.
@wicklebee
@wicklebee Жыл бұрын
The sad bit is, this wasn't even a surprise to me. And it made me so glad we finally fired Herm for doing this. But the reason it wasn't a surprise? I may not be thinking of the correct game, and someone can probably fact check me, but I remember a game where we were down multiple TDs and getting the ball back before halftime (might have been ASU/UCLA in 2019). Now, anyone with a fighting spirit thinks "hey, we should try to get a scoring drive going so we go into the locker room with a mood to come out in the second half and finish the rest of this comeback." Not Herm. Herm had us take a knee. So we would lose that game after finally coming alive in the 4th quarter but not being able to overcome a 32 point deficit because... Yeah, you generally won't do that in a single quarter. I was done with Herm at that game and it was pretty much only a year into his tenure, and it was a mistake for us to pay him the big monies after a bowl season in which he never beat a bowl eligible team. Also, the worst bit is that you didn't even mention an even dumber part of this drive. On the play before the timeout, Emory Jones was staring at the sideline with absolute confusion. A time where we needed a time out called to get an idea of what we should be doing in order to get this drive going (or you know, perhaps we should have called it before the Delay of Game instead of getting a massive time run off because of the penalty).

NY Jet fan here. Herm was a good "pom-pom" guy.....period. Terrible head coach. The worst game-manager we ever had (and we've had some really bad ones). What success he had for the Jets derived from his inheritance of Parcells-trained players. He single-handedly lost NY a playoff game in Pittsburgh because of his insane and idiotic game management. Then in his press conference he threw his kicker under the bus.....big time: "gotta make the kick". Doug Brien (K) was immediately let go by the organization. The game is known as "the Doug Brien game". Everyone in NY media bought the lie that our kicker lost the game for us. ( he missed 2 FG's....one he should have made and one that only 1 kicker, Adam Vinitierie, had made in January.....the opened end of Heinz field is very windy....in Pitt). Herm panicked on the final (what should have been: winning) drive. It has to be seen to be believed how he took a 3 yard loss (knee to position a FG.......turning a 40 yd FG into a 43 yarder), in January....windy.....Pittsburgh....where only 1 kicker.....maybe the best kicker of all time....had made a kick of that distance up until that time!.......WITH 35 SECONDS left and a timeout in his pocket! Nobody from our press called him out on it. We needed to get 5 more yards to get a make-able kick. HE NEVER LEARNED.........He continued to be a terrible game-manager and NEVER HELD HIMSELF ACCOUNTABLE......always had excuses!...."I thought it was a 1st down".......This guy scammed us all and made millions with his "rah-rah"...."you play to win the game".....half-assed, preacher act. He is probably a good man and husband. The press certainly never really turned on him here in NY......which is something that they HAVE done to better coaches. But he was a hard-headed, loser of a coach. .......there....that's out of my system!

My thought he took the time out to think about going for it and decided to punt the ball . Herm took a acu team in taters and got them competitive . They were even in the top 10 . What happened is the violations , pandemic and transfer portal . Herm is a good guy . Did not play by the rules that somebody did not like and ratted him out . Probably on his staff . It appears he wasn't a good manager of the team and kind of lax . You would think the kids would like him and their parents . This game was more of an excuse to fire him .

He was counting on them muffing the punt. That’s about the only thing that would have made the decision worthwhile

In 1996, they were 19 seconds away from a National Championship. As recently as 9 years ago they were down to a one game playoff to win the Pac 12.
