To open up the 1986 college football season, the New Mexico Lobos were set to play the Tennessee Volunteers. However, this game was going to be held in Albuquerque, and not Knoxville. And chaos ensued because of this bizarre agreement. This is the story behind the last ever battle between Tennessee and New Mexico, and one of the strangest non-conference games, considering the circumstances, that the Vols have ever arranged

USF season ticket member and alum here. I can't wait for that game! We've gotten Florida, Florida State, The U and Wisconsin to come in and Notre Dame will do the same. We're not in danger of losing that home date because unlike University Stadium, Ray Jay is well maintained.

New Mexico would finally get a (what we would now call) P5 home opponent in 1990. In fact, two of them: Arizona and Texas Tech. Without looking it up I'm going to assume they got that stadium upgrade. Still haven't hosted an SEC team, though they did host Missouri and Texas A&M in their Big 12 days in the '00s.

As a Lobos fan, this doesn't surprise me at all. The renovations have obviously since been done on University Stadium, but the fans are fair weather in Albuquerque and the team stinks so attendance is terrible and the Athletic Department has to engage in these buy games with the football team

Tennessee in 1986 wasn't nearly as good as it had been in 1985. The Vols started that season 2-5 before they finally got it together and won out. There were some injuries and just some inexperienced players filling holes, and some weird stuff, like the kicker slipping on the turf and missing a game-winning chip shot against Georgia Tech, and Army blocking a punt with 30 seconds to play and turning it into a TD. They lost their top running back in the New Mexico game, even though they won, and things just spiraled from there. Tennessee really wasn't any better in 1987 (10-2-1) than they had been in 1986 (7-5), but got every break they didn't get the year before.

Tennessee will not travel to perceived lessers. I remember they cancelled the return game with Marshall in the mid 2000s after Marshall went to Knoxville and almost upset UT. As a Marshall fan in Tennessee, I kept needling my friends about "Why y'all scared of Huntington?"

The best example I can come of with where a massive college football program traveled to a "smaller" college football program's stadium in relatively recent times is in 2009 when Texas, which was ranked #2, played at Wyoming. The game was played at 7,000+ feet altitude, but Texas ultimately won that game 41-10.

The weirdest road trip I can remember was Alabama at Cincinnati in 1984. The Bearcats weren’t any higher than New Mexico on the college football totem pole at the time. Although the game was at Riverfront Stadium, attendance was below 28,000-less than the capacity of University Stadium in Albuquerque at the time.
