Not strange at all. You are about to notice differences with two so far apart countries. It may well be interesting to the listener too, but even if it doesn't, so what? We speak of Finland here all the time, and I'm gonna say now, that people here don't try to be very polite. Be Finnish, say what you think!

This was not in Finland but me as a Finn living briefly in Sweden (you wouldn't expect many differences in a neighbouring country) I was talking about home way too much. Then I realised if I really need to tell some "hilarious" cultural difference I'd use words like "in my old school we did this and that" instead of "in Finland we..." Being more specific about the place and not repeating the "In Finland ..." made it sound somehow better. Less repetitive.

Glasnikov, you are right, and I use that system too. When I was living in another lääni (province) in Finland, people noticed the way I speak, and truly there were different ways to do things, think and behave. So the provincial differences came up, too. Good to notice the repetitivity issue, generally.

In Finland being silent _is_ polite. The reason why people don't talk to each other much if because they don't want to bother/inconvenience others without reason. Personal space is extremely valued in the Nordics. :D For example small talk can actually be rude in Finland. People also often just reply with a "hmmh", and it's just one of those things that is completely normal here, but foreigners think it's strange. It's just a matter of culture.

I have been living in Finland for almost ten years... so I have a lot of embarassing moments. Most of them relate to Finnish language. When I worked as a swimming teacher I used to ask the students if they needed me to adjust their swimming goggles. The problem is I made a mistake and used the word ”kuristaa” instead of ”kiristää”. One mean to get something tighter and the other one means to strangle someone. So for half a year I asked my students if they wanted me to strangle them. 🤣 Finnish people are really polite so the kids or the parents never wanted to correct me. It was really embarrassing when I noticed the mistake.

Adelram Wolfrik Some finnish people. Part of them just probably haven´t used spoken English very often, even though they understand it quite well. And, we are probably not the most talkative people in general, in Finnish either. The more south, bigger city, younger people, all likely to increase the possibility of the unnecessary smalltalk.

To avoid falling in winter: - Good shoes with proper winter soles (potentially also attachable metal spikes for icy weather) - Shortening steps to increase stepping tempo - Avoiding relaxing muscles to improve reaction time Basically idea is to reduce chance of slip with better shoes. Then walking technique improves ability to avoid falling when you actually inevitable still slip. Bonus point: If you have learned to run on ice it is much easier to avoid falling when running than walking. But of course if you fall from running you are likely hitting harder and worse way the ground. The best possible falling technique is to spread the hit to multiple body parts and avoid falling on top of hand or leg that can be crushed. Your accent is easy to understand even tough it feels like opposite to Finnish accent. It can be pretty soon (if not already) time when you can switch to Finnish. You can talk Finnish pretty badly (even using wrong words) and we will understand. Good example how bad Finnish can be understood.

Finnish people will be more embarrassed tha you ever feel with them. And if they don't say anything when you talk about Singapore it's because silence is a part of our conversation culture. We listen when we want to know about new things. :) It's considered polite and we may be genuinely interested. Loved the video!
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm now getting used to the idea of silence. I used to add "silence fillers" in my conversations but I've tried not to use them during a conversation coz I noticed people got startled if I use those "fillers" during their speech and I felt bad for spoiling their speech flow. It's so much easier to concentrate on what they're saying instead of thinking how to react too :D

When walking on slippery road, you go as fast as you want, there is no right way to do it because it depends about lot of variables as shoes you are using, so everyone understand if you take it really carefully, and what comes to falling down, everyone knows it can happen to everyone so they are not laughing at you.

As a native British person, I am pleased to tell you that your English is nearly perfect, and your accent is completely acceptable (sounds like a very mild mixture of something from east Asia with a slight hint of north American). I have also lived in Finland. As you must know by now, Suomi is a very different language from English, and I think it takes a while for Finnish people to re-tune their brain cells to English when beginning a conversation. Finnish people are also a bit shy and quiet when you first meet them, but they soon warm up and make friends. As a bonus, a Finnish friend is a friend for life, as well! They are very loyal. As for falling over on the ice, it is impossible to avoid doing this. Welcome to the Finnish winter! :-) Wrap up warm, and enjoy the sparkling snow and northern lights. About the bus, well you are obviously not a local who ought to know better, so socially-minded Finnish people will not be cross with you. I have always found them to be super-helpful and tolerant, except when very drunk. Finland is one of the best places in the whole world to live, study, and work.

I understand that falling down may feel embarassing, but don't worry: that also happens to every Finns sometimes. Every Finn has got many bruises for that throughout their life so they know how does it feel and they can feel you... Don't worry. Especially old people may hurt themselves badly (broken bones etc.) so if you see an old person falling down, check if (s)he needs help. There is actually business that shoemakers install studs into old people's winter shoes. Also different types of detachable stud addition parts for shoes are sold. I have also seen winter shoes that include their own detachable stud parts.

True, everyone falls. But (after watching salmiakki tasting videos) I've started following some foreigners' vlogs who live, or stay awhile, here. Have noticed couple of times how they say slippery takes practise to learn to walk, or how natives do it better. And it takes some practise from us natives too, early winter, just like driving, does it not? But we get our "winter feet" back fast, as by adult life we have years worth for experience. May take some getting used to, if you never ever had icy streets before. And come to think of it, shoes/boots make a big difference too. Detachable studs are smart, especially if you need to walk hurry, like to job or school or have an outside job. I had those, when I was delivering mail night time, back when I was still in school.

One way to deal with slippery hills is to go even faster accelerating all the way down, instead of slowing down because if you try to resist the movement, that's when you slip. Just go with the gravity! It takes some practice and courage though and every hill are different, adding some difficulty. But this is also the funniest way.

I wouldn't worry. Finns fall on ice too, we don't care if someone takes time at the bus-stop as delays are part of the journey, we like to listen to stuff and when someone is talking we do go "Hmm. Aha. Yep.", even when we're interested. Also the accent isn't an issue, just a foreginer talking to a foreigner in a foreign language :D

If you ever find yourself walking on a slippery surface, keep your knees bend at least slightly. Don't let your knees lock when walking because then it will be a lot harder for you to maintain your balance and find friction. If you still feel like you might be in danger of slipping, bend your knees a little bit more. Also if you still start to fall, this at least gives you the option to choose what way you fall down. And I recommend playing in the snow. Just run around and try to slide on your feet. That way you learn where the limits are. That's how the children learn too :D

Finnish people speak English moderately well, but there are people that do not understand people at all. Biggest problem for my generation (40+ years) was that teachers had really bad teaching habits. We rarely spoke English in English classes and if we did it was customary for teachers not to encourage speaking English if it wasn't perfect. If someone made a pronunciation mistake, then teacher would encourage others to join in and laugh at that mistake. Most of us just gave up. I think, things might be different now and millenials are more secure of speaking and not afraid of making a mistake.

I don't think it's you it's just finnish people who are weird. For example when there is an awkward silence most people tend to talk about something like you talked about your home. It's just that finnish people see nothing wrong with 'awkward' silences, so it might seem like they are bothered but actually they are just so used to being silent that they don't quite know how to react.

Greta J. For me, as a adult finnish man, it´s just "silence is golden". Awkward silence is only present when you´re actually expected to talk to someone, and it doesn´t happen, for a reason or another. Talking just for talking is american culture.

I lived in America for 14 years and naturally my first language is "English".. At the age of 15 I was suddenly shifted to Finland not really knowing a word of Finnish or knowing how to read or write. So naturally I have had some of the most embarrassing moments on the bus or bus card charging place as well... I would literally ask my mom (who was born and brought up in Finland) unlike my dad who was American to write what to say while recharging my bus card and she would write it down for me. I would say it to myself many times before going so I don't freeze and forget what to say. Seems pretty dumb how many times I stressed over saying basically anything in Finnish now that I think about it. Every once and a while I made a fool of myself by freezing and or suddenly forgetting what to say. Pretty humiliating to say the least. But this is only one embarrassing moments I got myself in. 😁

A Finn here. I was 8 days in SG last month (my second time there). Stayed in a beautiful spacious one bedroom flat in Ceylang, near Aljunied station. Totally 51€/night including the use of an amazing swimming pool. At a bus stop I asked a lady if the bus would go to the metro station. She asked if I was from Europe. "Yes, I am. How did you guess? Because you said metro instead of MRT (mass rapid transport). Wow!" I had the EZ link travel card and travelled everywhere by MRT and bus (fantastic). The first time getting off the bus I forgot to tap the card on the reader. Eeek, i thought maybe I¨ll get a fine!! Or maybe I cannot use the card anymore!! So, I ran to the nearest MRT station to ask at the information desk what I should do. They told me that there´s no problem, they just charge the full bus fare (as if I travelled until the end of the bus line). Singapore is really beautiful. I just love the hot weather. All places are full of flowers, even the sides of the bridges are covered by plants!! Can´t wait to visit again!!!
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! It's either I'm strange or you ARE really good at describing because I can come up with a vivid mental picture of you swimming in the pool, startled by the remark about meto/MRT by a local lady, forgetting to tap out of bus (trust me that happened to me several times and it's really painful coz I had to pay FULL fare until the END of the bus line! It's such a HUGE penalty! So, it's not really "no problem"! HAHA) I agree Singapore has flowers on side of the roads, middle of roads, sides of overpass bridges and the flowers look ALWAYS fresh! It's getting REALLY beautiful here in Finland too, so I guess no one is missing out anything here! ;) Edit: metro* (sorry about bad spelling, I was too excited typing!)

I don't think any of them were really a dumb foreigner moments except maybe the language thing but even that wasn't dumb :P I think your English is super clear on the video, but of course it's sometimes harder to understand foreign language in a real life situation. Everyone has fallen in the winter and been slow on the bus (no money, the card doesn't work properly, counting money). One thing, in addition to being cautious, that can help with the slipperiness especially on snow are proper winter shoes. I once walked the whole winter with my regular sneakers and I literally fell over 10 times. Fortunately no injuries though but I felt the embarrassment every single time. It's amazing how quickly one can get up when they fall in front of the eyes of several people!

Your English is all right and you speak clearly enough, don't worry :) Did you mean that when you ask a direct question they just don't understand? Maybe they just didn't hear you? Some people have difficulties with that if you don't have a strong loud voice, especially when listening to another language. I know I've sometimes done that just because I got embarrassed having to say "sorry I didn't hear you" too many times. If you're just waiting them to react to something you said, it might be a different problem. It might just be that some people have very different conversation styles. Like some are very active listeners and some are more passive. Neither is better, they're just different but it can be frustrating if you're expecting a certain style and they're not on the same page. It's also slightly a cultural thing :)

naniyodesu Actually it could be me coz I was used to getting a response whenever I’m in a conversation and expecting to get similar response here (unintentionally!). But getting not much response in a conversation suits me too as it means I don’t have to response tirelessly to every conversation either 😝🙈

accents or how much English one can speak isn't the issue. some people just can't read between the lines. its like you have to be crystal clear with beyond proper English and full sentences for them to understand. or maybe they lack common sense. however your English sounds, the words are the same, right?!!! its just people. btw your accent is attractive ^_^

You really don't have any reason to be embarrased of on the subjects you talked about here. I guess it's a cultural thing for you. As said before by many people, the things you talked about are really things that happens to us Finns too. Also I for one am really keen to learn about different countries from people who actually are born and raised in any given country. As far as I'm concerned, bring it on.

Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and city state Singapore are all south-east asian island states. And no, they are not part of China in any way other than the British used to colonize them. I guess confusing Singaporean people with Chinese is as insulting as confusing Germans to Spanish.

I cant speak on a Finns behalf. Ive ever been there before but visiting for the first time in December. But I can say you should not be ashamed of your voice and accent. you speak beautifully. Maybe just slow down a tad? but other than that, falling, i know, is not something finns laugh at because its something that happens too everyone and theyre a very nice, respectful, helpful people.

Nothing to do with your accent. Finns are very introvert in a sence, no one can talk to strangers unless they're drunk. And even more so in English - in Finland you get instantly roasted by comments "what the fk is that Rally English you're trying to talk" by other people, if your English skills are sub par. (This is caused by the Finnish accent, you've propably heard it before) You speak well and fluent enough in English so don't sweat it. Most of these thing are just the way Finns are.

And you should talk about Singapore. Most people find it interesting - yet again that its just Finnish way of having conversation. If a person is interested in hearing what you have to say they usually react the way you described. Its alot of "uhhu, ohho and aijaa" in Finland :DD

If you don't know what to talk: simply start to be Finnish - and be quiet. This is absolutely OK. The famous German writer Bertold Brecht lived a short time in Finland and said: The Finns are the only people in the whole world who are able to be silent in two languages.
