I remember when this first came out; it was written to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths on train tracks in Melbourne (Australia). It worked somewhat. I was on a train at the time where a car drove around the boom gates and hit just below me. The train kept going; the car didn't.

Part of me feels like this started off as a family joke or something but overtime grew to be why not let's just do it.
