I grew up just up the Palisade cliff from where this video passes. Thank you. I now live overseas and this really made my day. I walked my dogs all through this territory from about the age of 10 through 35. It was like my private park in the middle of the city. Around the area of this video is all railroad land. It is like a strange oasis of nature and wildlife in the middle of the most densely populated place in USA. The Manhattan skyline is just to the left of the cab window. Thank you.

To those unfamiliar with Jersey City, this is probably the most concentrated rail infrastructure in the shortest distance anywhere. My knowledge of what you are seeing: first bridge out of the tunnel is not a pipeline bridge -- it is a bridge that is part of the same line from Bayonne that used to go up through Hoboken and edgewater and through a tunnel to the west. Then you see NJ Turnpike overpass. After NJ Turnpike overpass, you see an empty railbed -- this used to lead to 1st bridge above.

Fascinating stuff. And, almost all of it inaccessible by car. Definitely a snapshot of an American backroad - something that can't be seen any other way.

First bridge after NJ Turnpike is Newark Avenue. About 200 feet beyond this is a removed bridge that used to carry the Harsimus and Passaic from Newark down along the 6th Street embankment to docks in JC. About 150 feet past this the cab passes under the PATH train track from Newark to WTC (looks like a short tunnel). Never thought about it as I grew up there, but this is incredible amount of infra in just a about not even 2000 feet!

I've been following along your run on a satellite view from Gargle Maps, and it looks from the overhead view that at about 1:26 in, right before you go under Newark Ave, there ought to be a trailing point switch to a spur coming in from the right, but I didn't see any such. Was that the junction to the former River Line that's now used by the HBLR? (which wasn't completed as of the date of that satellite photo)

One more thing. This video does not do justice to how sharp the curve is after exiting the tunnel. From my backyard up on the cliffs above this location, I used to have a campfire going and would listen to the incredible flange squealing and diesel engine struggling. To me it was a beautiful symphony that was always changing. For example an empty boxcar would sound totally different to a full boxcar. The speed in this video seems quite fast. I believe these are just locos with no cars.
