Yeah! We call them "Avecs".

Explanation by Japanese 5:20 When using a MetroCard, most people top up the card with the amount of money needed for the fare. In Tokyo and Osaka, you can get to most places with only 1500 yen each way, so even if you buy something at a convenience store, it is rare (at least in 2016, when online cashing wasn’t popular yet ) that you charge more than 5000 yen. These internet moments, especially damb stories, are very popular on KZbin in Japan, and it would be great to see them spread internationally. I hope more episodes will be spread all over the world by you!
@Mendrawza24 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. I'm planning a trip to Japan, so now I know how much to put on my card lol
@yuaelt Жыл бұрын
Yeah, more than 5000 would have been rare back when I lived in Tokyo as well, but that was 2011 and paying with them wasn't as widespread (and I assume the fares could have been cheaper too?..). But there was a reason to overcharge them even then. These cards work through fabric and leather so most girls I knew (heck, myself included) would drop them at the very bottom of their bag, and then lightly touch the reader with the bottom of their bag, walking through the gates without a pause, almost as if it wasn't even there. Of course, that was years before COVID, and now ppl would probably frown that it's unsanitary :D. But back then the only downside of it was that actually digging the card out from the rock bottom of your bag to charge it was a bother, so yeah, you'd load it up for a month or two in advance.
@Jay22222 Жыл бұрын
Could you please explain the joke at 0:48 as well? Thanks
@Jay22222 Жыл бұрын
WHOA, you mean a trip within Tokyo or Osaka, like a suburban trip, not like an inter city/prefecture train? 11USD each way is crazy expensive for a train metro, subway etc. It’s a bit understandable if it’s city to City. With all travel cards I’ve used you put 20-$50 maybe more on and then use it until it gets low fares are maybe 3-6$ each way (shortest journey to longest journey within the greater city) Edit: what the above poster said. Recharge for somewhere between a week and a month.

The "pocahontas woman" sounds like a similar type of girl we have here in Germany Many girls go to Australia or New Zealand after they finished high school so they can get to know themselves better or something like that. Some girls come back and tell you that they can't really speak German anymore or mix in English words when they speak so everybody knows that they've been to Australia!!

could be genuine too though. I spent some time abroad too and after months of speaking only english it can be difficult to switch back to your native language. It often happened that I knew the perfect word for what I wanted to say in english but for the love of god couldnt figure out the german equivalent, making me stutter and stop in normal conversations. It was actually quite frustrating and nothing I did on purpose or to brag.

Pocahontas women are quite hated in Japan. They always criticize Japan on their social media and always comparing Japan to the West. And they sometimes make up stories.
