Dumbing Down of UK Education While Pretending to Improve It

Great video. And I am an ex-teacher who got best value added grades for over 3 years. But my 'teaching method' did not fit in. ... I was told that I single handedly saved the school from special measures. But the system is evil.

The facts are that British Education has been dumbed down. I was talking to an Indian man recently who is one of the untouchables cast and now works in a high paid job in I.T. in the UK. He told me he gave a lot of British I.T. graduates tests with a view to giving them a job in his company and not one of them passed. If British education has not been dumbed down then why do we need to import so many skilled people?

Should not be teaching kids times tables simply by drilling it into their head by memory. Just teach them to multiply in their own heads. It comes down to repeating stuff without understanding and being able to figure the problem out on the fly.

edgarloike Repetition works, it's a fool proof way to learn and worked for many years under classical education. When there was classical education standards were extremely high. Now children are leaving school unable to read confidently, have a spelling age of an 8year old & cannot work out basic mathematical answers without a calculator.

I learned the times tables up to 12 so when it comes to multiples of 13 I have to work them out as I haven't learned it by rote and that takes longer. Also you need to learn to some basic facts by rote in order to use them to work other things out.

i am 57 and have noticed this dumbing down for many years. I have 4 children all now grown up and had many arguements with teachers about the poor standards in school. For instance incorrect marking of homework. it seemed that at this particular school they deliberatly marked down bright kids to lower everyone to the lowest common demoninator. After a big row with the headteacher i removed my childten from the school. I believe this dumbing down policy is also being vigorously being implemented by tv. The viewers nowadays are bombarded by mindless mush and even documentaries seem to be made for imbeciles to understand.

Things have been dumbed down for many years it started with John Major and got worse with Tony Blair. The kids aren't getting brighter the exams are just getting easier.
