It spoils just about every major plot twist in the original show like it's nothing, sometimes to an insensitive degree, despite the final product being meant for an audience that has likely never seen the show. Fun fact: Part of the marketing for this movie was putting adds on random videos, where they would show a voice actor from the movie begging people not to skip it, and then they would just show the first movie again. Not only does the average person not like adds, making adds where people in them beg you not to skip even more annoying than normal (especially since these adds were over an hour long), but just showing the first movie again I imagine created this feeling of "They don't have any faith in this movie to do well on its own, so they're just showing the first movie again to get us into theaters" which I imagine didn't give people confidence about the sequel's quality. Also, this movie was released during either January or February (I forget exactly when), and those times are the worst for movies to try and be successful because less people are in the theaters. Studios purposely release movies that they have no faith in during those months because they don't think that anyone will see them. I really liked this movie when I first watched it, and while it's message of "Maturity is not derived from the content of your work, but the themes and messages that you put into it" still resonates with me, you brought up a lot of really good points here. Great video!

It’s so weird to me that the movie tried to make it seem like the side that literally invaded and destroyed their whole civilization are the good guys, and portrays them as a utopian society, and that anything that is darker, more mature, or masculine is actually bad for some reason. Like I would understand if it was just about sending a message about playing with younger siblings, but in that case shouldn’t they have made the younger sister more sympathetic instead of demonizing the brother.
@gtd5626 Жыл бұрын
That's not what the movie was trying to portray. Bianca regularly destroyed Finns playsets when they were younger, which is part of why he stopped playing with her. Then, as Bianca got older and understood what she did wrong, she tried again to play but isn't able to communicate that well (Not evil). It's not about toxic masculinity but on how you grow up doesn't have to be edgy and dark, but by being open and kind is what makes someone mature/tough.

I love the sequel just as much as the first, the only problem I had with it was everyone blaming Emmet for everything that went bad, now sure it was kinda his fault for accidentally letting Sweet Mayhem in the bunker, but he had no idea his friends were going to get kidnapped, at least the cat lady didn´t entirely blame him though so credits to her, and yeah he also destroyed the cake and caused Armamagedon, but he was just trying to save his friends who he thought were brainwashed, plus he was manipulated by Rex into thinking it, so it´s hard to really fault him for that (looking at you Lucy), speaking of Lucy, she´s the reason why Rex exists in the first place and the duplo war starting, don´t get me wrong I liked her in this movie and how they showed more of her character, but it did bother me a bit how she blamed Emmet for Armamagedon happening, granted she did apologize for changing him so all is well, in conclusion and I have said this ¨planty¨ of times before in many comment sections, Emmet needs a therapist.

The first movie's fourth wall break was good, because it's the twist at the end where you realize the world is just some kid playing with his dad's legos, with Emmet moving around as a bit of humor, but in the sequel, the idea of "oh look it's kids playing with legos" is shoved in your face to try and be super meta. It doesn't even feel like a lighthearted stop motion movie, it just feels like a family drama with computer generated Legos added in. Also, it's just dumb how they went from "the kids control the legos" to "they all have a mind of their own and can move without anyone knowing like in toy story", completely going against the logic established in the first movie.
@gtd5626 Жыл бұрын
I liked the real-world portions. I didn't feel there were too many as the ones shown were just progressing the story. Also we know from the first movie, that it takes place in the real world and everything is just Finns imagination, I liked that they incorporated that as you can't just ignore it until the end like they did in the first movie because it's not a twist anymore. They know we know this, so just use it.
@Saturno-h2m9 ай бұрын
they dont have a mind of their own, you didnt quite get the full plot, the story is told from the future kids, they were aware of times characters went "out of bounds" and both kids decided to make that event cannonical for the lego creatures, with them even experiencing some kind of time dilation if outside lego surfaces, implying that the lego creatures experience their own imaginary version of general relativity, and this is all shown in the movie throught the kids perspectives(imagination)
@matthewcarey52437 ай бұрын
@@Saturno-h2m How do you explain Emmet moving around on his own on Will Ferrell's desk in the first film? You can write off other instances of the minifigs moving around as the kid's imaginations, but Will Ferrell hears Emmet trying to bounce off the table a couple of times. My theory is that imagination is so strong, it can create parallel universes where the Lego minifigs live kind-of real lives that are directly influenced by our world and the kids that made it. If the kids decide that a character travels/is transported to the "real world", then they will actually get transported there and can move around, but with great difficulty that requires practice. They can only go back to their universe if the kids decide they will return as part of the story through the power of imagination.
@Saturno-h2m7 ай бұрын
@@matthewcarey5243 thats a pretty good theory, my theory is that the boy in the first movie "accidentally" dropped emmet to thicken emmets plot, and later on imagined emmet going back on its own with his new powers(which is just the boy being really good at building with legos) and in my theory the boy made it seem like emmet was doing that all by himself, like i said the story seems to be told from thr future in both movies, so it would make sense the kid would want to fit in the story that the characters had a mind of their own just so it is still cannon, despite all theories we know that this kid is a genius and hes got a really good imagination lol

Actually, I can defend the Queen's musical number (not the dialogue preceding it, but the song itself and why its in the movie.): IIRC, this song is meant to make the queen seem like the bad guy, being in line with a villain song, but for a twist non-villain. It also was meant to push the idea Rex was going to help Emmet, rather than betray everyone. The song was meant to push the red herring antagonist, which I personally think is a neat plot device, despite the obvious flaws you mentioned.

I thought the point of the song was "The song is from a smaller child (the little sister) trying to convey sincerity to a the older brother that has become aware of, well, the world that is a far less ideal place that it ought to be, so in both of their heads, the same song plays, and to a literallist idealistic person, somewhat naive, it sincerely tries to connect and convey sincerity, while the other more jaded person sees these awkward but sincere attempts at sincerity as blatant lying." If you're not a fan of musicals, I don't know if you can judge it, but as one I'd say the numbers (song sequences) are pretty good in this. I especially love the queens first song, it's so dumb in concept and so funny in execution, especially once she turns out to be good in the end. It's the most needlessly suspicious song ever, and it just works for me. Heck, the songs were the best part, because this movie certainly lost a lot of important stuff from the original in other respects.

I feel like your thoughts on stories approaching morals are something I can learn from. What if you have a clear idea for a moral, but it’s simple, so you don’t need to harp on it too much? For instance, let’s say that you want to make a movie that says “something about you that you see as a weakness can be a strength”, and this can be demonstrated by having a character with a “lame power” who uses it creatively to come out on top, the whole film doesn’t have to be people talking about, you don’t even have to bring it up in dialogue. What might you say about that? Sorry about this lengthy comment!

17:15 I am free to take criticism but I kind of disagree with your point here. The whole point of the Systar Sytstem characters is that they are being protrayed through the eyes of the younger sister who was probably a toddler when she first started destroying the brother's stuff. It's an allegory for the conflict between siblings and how they usually aren't good at communicating with each other. I don't have a problem with their idea being stupid because these are decisions being made by a literal 8 year old.

The Lego Movie was one of several movies that really did not need a sequel. As a kid I never gave two craps about the duplo characters at the end, they went completely over my head, the only reason I remember them now is because they lead to the tragedy that was the 2nd movie. I honestly would’ve never thought about those duplo characters ever again until later on in my life, but even then I would’ve thought “Oh it has an open end, that’s pretty cool” not “I think we need to have a second movie to explain this” Also the 1st movie had a better video game, the 2nd lego movie video game sucks absolute booty, argue with the wall.

The bomb hearts saying things like "Hello", "I love you" and genuinely being nice and giving compliments is because Bianca just wants to play with Finn. But from Finns perspective, Bianca is destroying everything and shes not trying too, but Finn sees it as an attack. The Queens song "Not Evil" is essentially the sister saying, "Please let me play with you. I promise I won't mess anything up" and giving Finns lego some stuff as an apology and gesture of peace, and Finn not trusting her or giving her a chance. Emmet's world is a representation of the brother's imagination, and to him, his annoying sister is the embodiment of evil, but all she wants to do is play.

Not to mention the evil traumatized version of him just kinda dies instead of getting a second chance, which Business somehow got instead, even less rightfully so. And speaking of Business, his and the Cops' complete and utter absence in this movie were definitely strange...
@gtd5626 Жыл бұрын
Emmet being treated badly kinda makes sense as Emmet and Rex represent Finn, and he wants to grow up and sees his tounger self aka Emmet as someone weak and needs to change as he's "grown up". They did say in the movie for the time travel thing to work. Rex had to disappear as Finn is now choosing to be Emmet and Rex existing would be a paradox. Lord Business is the dad. He said, "Everyone get along, boom fixed it, I'm going golfing. You guys can fix this among yourselves.
