Dump Trucks Are Great! Spotlight of my F-350 & F-750 Dump Trucks for Personal Use

I bought a brand new ''95 F-350 for my lawn care, landscape and snow removal business in 1995. It was 4X4 (dually) w/ lockouts; the 460 EFI with twin tanks (needed every drop!) and I put an Eagle-12' electric over hydraulic dump bed on it and a Boss 9'2" V-Plow. I had a John Deere 770 4X4 tractor with bucket, rear 3 pt. blade and bush hog plus a Bobcat 7753 that I would haul to various jobs and my truck never skipped a beat! It did such an amazing job at snow removal too! 'military-spec' to the corners removal, no matter how much snow fell! It could push up 10-12' piles! One time, a farmer called to HOPE I could open up his 1/4 mile long drive that was all drifted in, along with all the county snow plow windrow. At 1st, he hired a plumbing company and they sent out a plow truck (7-1/2' Western straight plow, LOL) then a rubber tire tractor/hoe - then another! And after 8 hours, they only were able to dig in about 20' from the edge of the road and they charged him $800 for that - then QUIT! I told the farmer no promises, but I'd swing by shortly and take a look. I pulled in that 20' then backed up to the ditch on the opposite side of the road and pondered what I got myself into, then I put the Boss into full V and lowered to within about 4" of the ground. I put the truck into 4-high in Drive, put on my seatbelt and then went FULL SEND! By the time I hit the wall the backhoes made for me, I was doing maybe 25 and I had it floored! The V-plow had centered all the force equally on my truck and the snow EXPLODED to both sides and in 2 seconds, I was into virgin, foot deep snow the rest of the way down the drive! I came over the hill to the house where he was outside and he was exstatic! I then angled the plow to the east and ran down the west edge of the drive and pushed that all off to the downwind side and easily pushed the rest of the other company's mess over to the east as well. It took me all of 15 minutes to have his driveway....like I said about 'military spec,' all the way to the edges and he handed me 5-$100 bills and I handed him 4 of them back! I suggested he call me 1st next time, LOL - to which I had a customer until sadly he passed a few years later. Sorry for the long read. That truck was amazing and I only sold when we retired and moved to FL!

I bought an 88 F350 4x4 dump and I LOVE it. Best $2500 I ever spent. Have it for 2 years and slowly fixing it up. That truck is a BEAST. Your 95 is an AWESOME truck, love the 75 also.

YES a Dump is great to have. Just rented the same size as yours from United. Hauled 6 Loads of 5/8- to my home. I own a backhoe 19000 pounder. So I always need gravel for my pad for my TOYS to sit on. Like you I said I want my own Backhoe. My baby is a 1978 Dynahoe Like a Dump truck, you can always use a backhoe around the homestead. I have done so much with mine. Even use it as a man lift for trimming trees. It's mainly for my garden turning the soil. So glad you got a bigger one to pull that wht. Of Heavy Equipment.

Buddy I'm with ya. I had a work truck from Imagineers LLC CT - F800, a 1998 and it was the bomb. Took it home a lot of weekends and despite the overkill on honesstead work it never was that. Just a great utility to have and get at it. My personal truck was an F150 with that 300 I-6 and a five speed and it took me all over the New England ways. Could have had manys a Camero or Mustang but you know what ? And you know the answer. Utility. Helping friends. Gettin stuff done man. All's its about. And a truvck wants to fire up and go. Big trucks are awesome. Look at some of the dump trucks the military uses. Iv been fortunate enough to drive some of the older models during my time in service . With big Cummins and CAT motors. Noting like split shifting gears to make big things move.

I have a thought for the small tractor loading. Take the backhoe and dig out an area to drive the dump into. It looks like about 4' would do it, maybe even to the bottom of the door to be able to open it. Then you can drive up to the sides of the truck and reach over the bed. If your water table is too high and it would fill up, do the opposite, build 2 hills wide apart enough to drive the dump through.

What motor was in that 1995 f350? All i heard was it had a blown head gasket. Was it the 7.5? The 7.3 turbo or the non turbo? I'm looking really hard at a 1995 f350 non turbo. Not gonna win a race with it but I will get the job done slow and steady.

I wished I had more video and pictures of that truck. It was actually an International, but my Dad and I bought it thinking we'd haul some stone on the side. We couldn't buy gravel cheap enough compared to the big guys and it was the same price to have it delivered to us as it was to go get it ourselves, so we got rid of it. It was fun learning to drive a twin stick transmission though so I'll always be glad for it. Thanks for watching Eddie!

I have noticed that recently (summer of 2020), it has been more difficult to find good used dump trucks. Traditionally, I have always found them on Craiglist and more recently, Facebook Marketplace. Most of the time it seems that I find them when I am not looking for them for whatever reason :) It could be different depending on where you live I'm sure but for me, they're out there you just have to be patient for the right deal and everything I've ever bought has been something that I need to do a little to fix up. It was a bit underpowered but it always got the job done. Just couldn't be in a big hurry to do anything is all. I never ran it very hard with it fully loaded but it's still accomplished the task nonetheless.

Ive got an '89 f150 with a 300 straight six, i was 5 when my dad bought it new. I still drive it almost every day, has 256,000 miles on the original engine. Runs great if you can figure out OBD1 fuel injection (which cant be that difficult if I can do it) Best engine ever made. Will run forever and (if geared probably) will tow a cruise ship sideways across dry land until it runs out of gas.

Whoa! If I had to buy 2011 or newer I wouldn't have anything! Whereabouts are you located that that is a thing? I didn't know how badly I wanted this truck until after I bought it! For what I do now, it has been a better fit than the F350. Plus, I sold the F-350 for more $$ than what I paid for the 750 so it was a pretty good upgrade. Thanks for watching!

@@digdrivediy California, any diesel over 14000lbs+ GVWR has to be 2011 or newer. So the only older Dump trucks that would be street legal would be gas ones with like the 6.8L V10, or perhaps a smaller like F350 with

@@xTheJmanChannel Well, I don't remember the actual GVW. I'm sure it wasn't as high as what the truck could "handle". I just know it would haul 5 ton and dump it just fine. Likely wasn't legal and that isn't something to be doing every day by any means!!!

I've been looking at dump trucks and stumbled upon this video. I ran across a '75 F-750 with a PTO flat dump bed for $2k. I got some details from the guy along with more pics and a video. The engine sounds fine, new brakes, and switched from the widowmaker rims to 22.5s, but he told me the Allison transmission got busted. Is $2k a good deal for a running, but not driveable dump truck?

Without seeing the truck that is a pretty tough call but my gut tells me that you should hold out for something that runs and drives. I would expect to have no less than $3000 in getting a working transmission back in that truck unless you're able to do a bunch of the work yourself. I'd say $1000 is more in line of a good deal if you have to pay to have it fixed. Around here you can get a good working dump truck of that size for $4000-$5000 and it is ready to drive down the road. Another thing to consider is that the flatbed dump of that truck won't be ready to work like a real dump truck if you need to haul material, so you'll have that to deal with too. I bought the F700 in this video with white cab and red bed for $2000 and with several hundred dollars of brake work it was a working and fully functioning truck that was ready to be used. @@digdrivediy Thanks Neil! Yeah, he switched out the widowmaker rims for 22.5's, got new brake cylinders, a new booster and rubber lines, so I figured that would help offset some costs. He said he was quoted $1200-$1600 to rebuild the AT540 with a $400 rebuild kit. Others told me I'd be looking at around $1k - $2k. I saw the cores are pretty cheap, but then again it's an Allison. If you have some time to look at it, I'd be happy to send some pics and a video of the truck to get a better idea.

@@PaulBasco sorry I didn't see this reply. You're right in that many of those upgrades do go a long ways towards making that a good deal. I'm glad to look at pics and offer up an opinion if you're still thinking about it. What is the primary purpose of the truck? If you have good sources for that transmission then it might be worth a second look but I would personally want to talk to someone about fixing it first before I jumped into it. Would you be doing the transmission swap yourself or hiring it done? Best of luck!

@@digdrivediy No worries. I'll be using it as a private carrier, so I'll be hauling timber, pallets, etc. within a 15 mile radius. The guy selling it said he would help me talk to the transmission shop if I bought it. Only thing is that I recently found out that the hoist subframe is spot welded onto the truck frame. I heard that's not good, so now I'm having second thoughts.

Why for personal use? Just sold a Towing Company, with many trucks, and employees, was thinking a small dump truck, owner op, doing small side jobs. is there no work for that? I'm in Northern CA, thanks for any input. Great video btw!

Oh there's plenty of work out there for a small dump. I do a handful of side jobs but the primary roll is personal for firewood and around the farm, etc. I have a full time job that occupies my time during the week and I'm not ready to give that up yet. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching!

I was looking back through your videos trying to find more info on your F750. You did a great job explaining uses and also why one might need or not need a bigger series truck. My International had a dump bed for many years then I found myself not using it a lot. So instead of selling it I removed the bed and made a gooseneck puller which works great for me now. I still have the dump bed if I ever need it. One day I’d like to get a newer truck like yours or a comparable International to pull my equipment and put the bed back on my current truck. Does the 750 have the 3126 Cat engine?

I saw your truck over on your channel. Looks like a nice working setup. I almost bought a Harvester as growing up I was obsessed with Scouts. Always been a Ford guy though too, so the Ford won. Yeah, the 750 does have the 3126. Know anything about turning them up? It's only doggy when I'm pulling the backhoe but it still gets the job done way better than the 350. Thanks for looking through the "oldies". I want to make a new feature video of the 750. Hope to start getting it fixed up this year.

How can I get a dump truck registered? Do I need to have a CDL drivers license? Same size as the F750! Great video though 🚛❤️

I have just registered my dump trucks just like any other vehicle at the DMV. Only difference is you need to know what weight rating you need for the license plate. General rule is that the weight rating of the plate should match the GVW of the vehicle. My F750 is a GVW of 33,000 lbs. Any truck with a GVW over 26,000 lbs requires a CDL to drive. You can register and plate it though without a CDL, but you're not supposed to be driving it loaded without the CDL. Some F650's and maybe even F750's are under 26,000 and don't require the CDL. I insure my dump truck through Progressive. Hope that helps.

They were Courser M/T tires but I don't remember the specific size for sure. I didn't think I would forget that but I guess I just didn't keep that in the memory bank. I regrettably sold the F-350 a couple years ago so can't go look any more. Thanks for checking out the video!

Thanks so much! The F-350 just has stock Ford OBS dually rims that I polished up and put lug nut caps and different center caps on which makes them look more like the big truck Alcoas. The F-750 is just your standard 22.5 Alcoa aluminum wheel.

Hi Tommy. Great question but no, the F-750 doesn't have air plumbed to the back for trailer brakes. The trailer you see me towing does however have electric brakes. Appreciate you watching. Take Care.

I know; right? Just happened to be in the right place at the right time I guess. The truck isn't perfect cause it was used with a salter in it's previous life but so far so good, it has served me very well in almost 2 years now. The odometer reads 28,000 miles. It was a city municipal truck that only ran around in town. I don't hardly believe the mileage but have nothing that leads me to believe it is not accurate though either. Thanks for checking it out!

@@digdrivediy have you ever tried pulling up a carfax on it to see if it has a record of mileage that makes sense? Half of the dump trucks I've seen have very low miles, 20-50K miles on a 10-15 year old unit isn't uncommon to see, even on rental fleets vehicles.

That 8K though is a really good deal. Did you have to put much money into it when you got it? Is the rust mostly surface rust or will it need some new metal welded in?

Hey Neil! Quick urgent question for you! I have a 1994 Ford F-350 dump truck as well. And Idk if it’s the exhaust or carburetor, but it came completely loose and started making very load noise as well as slowly overheating the car! I’m not sure if I can just clamp it back on or have to do a complete repair of it? Hopefully you can provide me some insight

Well, can't be too sure if what the problem is but if it is load but still runs well it is likely the exhaust. Usually you can clamp that back together or patch it up with a soup cannot something to get you going again. The overheating part has me confused. If the exhaust broke at the manifold then could be causing an overheating situation I suppose. Hard to diagnose stuff via the comments but those are my guesses. Just depends on how it is broken. Best way is with muffler clamps unless it is the manifold. In which case that will be tough to patch up.

@@digdrivediy we was able to use an exhaust clamp to clamp the middle part and it doesn’t fall of anymore! But the part that’s actually came off isn’t clamped bc the old clamped basically melted onto the pipe so we have to cut it off some how! Thank you again for the help 🙏🏼

How much weight were you able to haul with your 2nd f350? I recently bought a 02 Chevy 3500 dump and I don't now what I can haul in the dump bed other than going to the rock plant and getting a load. great video by the way.

I would haul 5 ton in my F350 very regularly. That's about all it wanted. It would dump it no problem. Brakes become the major issue when getting that heavy.

They had a big scoop in the front that like a front end loader and then they could lift the payload up over the cab and dump into the bed behind them! That would be wild! You do not need a CDL for vehicles under 26,000 pound GVWR. The F-350 dump truck does not require a CDL. This F-750 is a 33,000 GVWR vehicle with air brakes so therefore it does require a CDL. You can get an F-650 or F-750 that is 26,000 GVWR so in that case those would not require the CDL. There are lots of dump truck options that will not require having a CDL to operate.

I'd like to know what you think it cost you in time and materials to restore these. As the cost and complexity of new trucks goes up, it makes sense to look at the older more simple models.
