The mission had gone sideways, and now, all he could hear was the relentless pulse of his own heartbeat. "It's everywhere," he muttered to himself, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. He was used to facing danger head-on, but this was different. The whispers, the strange sense of being watched-it was unnerving, even for someone as seasoned as Scorch. The walls seemed to close in on him as he paced back and forth. The air was thick, laden with a sense of inevitability. Whatever had followed him into this forgotten ruin, it was relentless, and it wasn’t going to let him escape. "You're not leaving yet, are you?" a voice purred from the shadows. Scorch whipped around, every muscle tensed for action. But there was no immediate threat, only the sound of a soft laugh, followed by the faintest glimmer of movement. He narrowed his eyes, trying to pierce the darkness. "I didn’t expect company," Scorch growled, his voice low and dangerous. The figure stepped into the light-a woman, cloaked in something that shimmered like smoke and shadows. Her eyes glinted with mischief, and her lips curled into a wicked smile. She was beautiful, but there was something wrong about her, something that made Scorch’s instincts scream. "You should have," she said, her voice like honey, but with a venomous edge. "You’ve been such a naughty boy, Scorch." The words sent a shiver down his spine. He wasn’t sure why, but the way she said them, with such knowing amusement, made his blood run cold. She tilted her head as if savoring the tension, her fingers trailing along the edges of his weapon belt in a teasing motion. "Everything you’ve been searching for…" She stepped closer, her breath warm against his ear. "It’s everywhere. In your head, in your heart. You think you’ve escaped, but it’s already too late." Scorch tensed, his mind racing. He could feel the weight of her words pressing down on him, invading his thoughts, just as much as whatever force had been chasing him. This wasn’t just about physical danger. This was something deeper. He grabbed her wrist before she could get too close, his eyes locking with hers. "I don't play games," he warned, his voice low, but steady. She chuckled, a soft, silken sound that only added to the unease swirling in the room. "Oh, but you're already playing, Scorch. You always have been." She twisted her wrist free, effortlessly, her grin widening. "You’ll never outrun it. It’s already inside you." The room seemed to pulse with a strange energy, and Scorch could feel the weight of her words settle deep in his chest. This wasn’t just a trap. It was him she was after. And perhaps, the most dangerous game of all wasn’t about escaping from a place-it was escaping from yourself. He clenched his fists, the flames inside him flickering in response to her presence. "I’ll burn everything to the ground if I have to," he said, his voice dark with resolve. Her laugh echoed, sending chills down his spine. "I think you already have."
