... take some kerosene (jet fuel and kerosene are very similar) and pour a splash on the sidewalk. Come back in a couple of hours and it'll be gone because it's evaporated. Same thing happens here. It's a larger amount, yes, but given the speed of the aircraft, the amount dumped and the distance over which the fuel is dumped there's zero impact on the environment.

That's what I was thinking, I guess they probably just tell the computers how much to dump and it does it for them, you'd hope that the flight computer would know what the proposed destination was and wouldn't let them dump too much, they would probably still need to leave reserves in case they needed to divert.
@jm08a318 жыл бұрын
Actually, they JUST have a switch for the fuel dump. you have to get the gallon to distance ratio. the calculation is on a checklist note. The calculation is then done manually.
@UKN777 жыл бұрын
On the 747-400 you set the amount of fuel you want left in the tanks after the fuel dump by turning the knob next to the fuel nozzle switches on the overhead panel. The nozzles will stop dumping fuel once you reach that number. It's very straight forward.

In the description it says cabin insulation was blowing into the cabin through the air vents I don’t know how that can happen unless there was a break in one of the ventilation pipes as it passed through some insulation. In any case I guess it would not have been flying again that day as it would have meant engineers locating the damage and fixing it which would have meant removal of panels, luggage lockers and seats etc. The 747 however will always be my favourite airliner.

@europeanpilot64698 жыл бұрын
+Kap Bab Keep calm mate, that's only a fuel dumping, to be able to land because the plane cannot land with the fuel for San Francisco, it will be too heavy... A fuel dumping isn't at all dangerous, that's only a procedure to make the plane lighter... But that's quite impressive and rare, that's why I said that he was lucky. And keep in mind that Dan could reach San Fransisco few hours after so that wasn't a very serious incident. Have a good day.
@kapbab7518 жыл бұрын
European Pilot I understand that, but there is something seriously wrong with a plane that could be dangerous if you are ever in that situation. They wouldnt divert and waste fuel at the cost of likely hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars for something negligible.
@europeanpilot64698 жыл бұрын
+Kap Bab First, in a flight, nothing is negligible. Second, I think that a pilot should never hesitate to dump several tons of fuel, even if that cost thousands of dollars, to make the flight always safer... So the cost in dollars cannot be used as an argument. And you may know that there are several diversions each day in the world not always for very very serious reasons. The fact is that, this plane and it's passengers probably not risked their lives in this diversion.
@kapbab7518 жыл бұрын
You completely missed the point of my argument. Fact is - when you need to do this, something isnt right. Nobody should ever want to be on a flight if everything isnt perfect.

Jet fuel is not like gasoline. Gasoline is very volatile. If you held a lighter up to a puddle of gasoline, you would probably burn your hand. Jet fuel is different; it has to be atomized. If you held a lighter up to a puddle of jet fuel, it would not go up in flames, it might not even catch. If you sprayed it out of a spray bottle and lit it in the air, it would burn quite well. While the fuel trail could burn quite easily, it would be detected immediately and the fuel flow stopped. Even if the flow continued, the fuel would never catch on fire within the wing/fuel line. All of this assumes that the fuel trail is ignited somehow and can sustain a burn in a low oxygen environment (if at high altitudes, which doesn't appear to be the case here)
