Those who refuse to go forward will simply rediscover why we went forward in the first place. Prior to grading there were thousands of books with hidden restoration. It was commonplace in the 70s to color touch and trim books as the prices for comics were not really that big a deal back then. Pricing now is a serious issue, with books into 7 figures. We need grading.

I'm a collector. Not a Seller so I buy nothing just to turn a profit. I have a few Graded comic and just because I enjoy the comic and want to display. Another reason is I find it frustrating that many dealers want to sell nice raw comics for graded prices so if I want the book, why not get a graded one. Either way I guess it's what you are comfortable with.

When i saw the title i am like anyone who knows Regie, knows he doesn't make decisions on the heart, but on the mind. Decisions based on feelings and emotions rather than facts leads to disaster. What one chooses to do is ultimately up to each individual person. The key is to make decisions that dont lead to regret. And emotion based decisions tend to lead to more regret than calculated fact based decisions

Nice! How will you make decisions about purchasing high value 9.8 CGC books in the current case? If they release a more tamper evident case (see recent Borok interview with swagglehaus about temper-evident as anything can be tampered) will that change those decisions about the current case? For example, if you were in the market for Hulk 181 in high grade CGC in a current case, how would you decide whether it might be a reholdered green label slipped into a blue label and then reholdered? I love competition too. My big question is about how to judge current cases in high grade from CGC in terms of risk mitigation from copycats not yet identified.
@RegieCollects11 ай бұрын
Just off the top of my head, buy from reputable dealers and shops. Look at the grader’s notes and compare it to the comic you are buying. Do a physical inspection of the comic’s case. I try to use common sense whenever I spend money. You should always think about what you are doing whether the book is raw or graded. If the book is signed or not. If it comes from CGC, CBCS, EGS, Halo, PGX, etc.
@Voxclamantis11 ай бұрын
@@RegieCollects but in reholdergate they have been reholdered. They are perfect cases. 9.8s 9.6, 9.4, even 9.2 typically or often have no grader notes. I don’t think you are considering the specifics of this scandal and what it means. Dealers won’t be able to detect issues. Comic Book Investments even asks the question: ”how as a dealer might I tell ? “ The problem is you can’t without cracking out the book. The book could be missing the Marvel Value Stamp, or a page and it has a blue label. Same with restoration. The green or purple innner well gets slipped inside a blue label cases and was then reholdered.

Every certification company should have an ISO certificate to guarantee the whole (grading) process and the quality delivered. Renowned gemstone testing centers such as GIA, GRS, Lotus, NEL and/or IGI have an academic approach. Some are government agencies/universities or rely on government funds. All instruments to be used are regularly tested and calibrated according to established procedures. Furthermore, cheating is simply career-destroying for an academic. Edit: Two years ago I read an article revealing that a GIA certified natural 7ct diamond had been "exposed" as unnatural by IGI. As technology continues to improve for creating unnatural diamonds, this one has slipped through the cracks. The manufacturer of the diamond has itself submitted it for certification to demonstrate the quality of its product. For example, exceptional gemstones are regularly offered with multiple certificates.

The graded comic book market is fine... out of the millions of graded collectibles that have passed through CGCs hands it should have simply been expected that there is fraud and issues within their process AS IN ANY BUSINESS. No business is 100% efficient. I've been a controller and accountant for years and built processes handling tens of millions of dollars and things slip through the cracks, it's inevitable even if your system is 100% automated let alone reliant purely on direct labour. I agree with you Regie that the best thing that can happen from this is CGC's processes simply become better, they provide a better service, and enhancing competition. Maybe the community stops arbitrarily devaluing CBCS 9.8 slabs? Anyway CGC will make improvements and the graded comic industry will only be more robust. The true purpose of slabbing a book is to protect it. That's its purpose. The grade is provided as a benchmark of the condition at the time of slabbing because it can no longer be inspected. I think things have gotten a little out of hand with needing slabs to be flawless as well as the books. Insofar as price - the customer decides. No one can make you buy a book. If something is more than you're willing to pay - you can walk away. Prices will come down. 20k 9.8s of any issue isn't worth shit in my opinion. Just wait five years when folks start dumping it.
@RegieCollects11 ай бұрын
I’m not sure that’s the true/only purpose of slabbing. Top loaders and Mylar are fantastic options for protection and they are nearly free in comparison to grading. Theoretically a grading service provides protection, preservation and assurance. That last part translates into valuation and liquidity.

Reggie, I’m going to get hate for this, but this hobby doesn’t attract the brightest people on the planet. However it’s mostly true. People in this hobby generally think with their emotions rather than with logic, rationality or fiscal responsibility. That’s why so many go broke because they leverage/spend way too much into comics and then get burned when they drop in prices. Or over do with grading books that have no sense in the world getting graded. Grading is not cheap. In that effect, we had entered the junk slab era in 2021 with hundreds of thousands of books slabbed and not desired. Now these same people are not taking pause and wanting to crack all their CGC cases to resubmit to CBCS? SMH moment. Full disclosure I called out the whole inconsistency and lack of standards and overall bad business practices of CGC over 4 years ago, and no one listened. I had stopped all submissions to CGC, and the rest of the comic world caught up. Glad finally CGC is getting some karma for fleecing people for so many years. Unscrupulous practices, and the “resubmission model” for constant revenue is utterly shameful. If you pay money to get your comic graded it should be accurate the first time. Period. However CGC refuses to incorporate machine learning/ AI to increase operational consistency in grading. They won’t because of revenue generation of “resubmits” is too juicy for them to end it. However the inconsistency and lack of standards (among the misappropriation and “swap” scandal) is now biting them in the butt. It was inevitable, I foresee a class action and potential bad times ahead for CGC. Sorry for the long winded post.

I hope CBCS comes out of this with a greater market share than before. I hope CGC learns some valuable lessons and improves their practices. Agree - everyone should do as they want. That's an "of course!" statement. But you should check yourself a bit... Firstly, I think you've rationally arrived at your position, but I don't think that someone is "irrational" if they don't want to buy an expensive CGC slab right now - no more than you aren't irrational for continuing to be willing to do so. In my case, I'm not willing to spend $25K on an FF1 in a CGC 5.0 slab, when neither I, nor the person selling it to me can be certain that it wasn't swapped out, or if there's a missing page, coupon or scribbling throughout the book. I think this is rational. Another rational thought process to ponder....... You mention you don't like wasting money, so you'd never crack out your books and send them to CBCS (and I agree with you on that too!) but... Question - Given the fact that you don't want to waste money, how is it rational to send more raw books to CGC right now, when we know that CGC is going to be forced to upgrade their slab? Doesn't this mean you'll be wasting money on putting a book into a slab that the collector's market is certain to come to view as a negative, the moment the improved slab comes out? The new slab will be touted as "better"... Right? And the old slabs will be looked at with suspicion. Why wouldn't you wait? Is there an urgency to get something slabbed?

As long as this fantastic hobby continues, I'm happy to be among the fanboys out there. Raw or slabbed, comics are the bomb. I have both, though my intention is the preservation of my Marvel Silver age books. I have only 44 slabbed books (and more to come), and each one has a raw twin brother or two...or three. I hate that you and many others call CGC'd books "graded comics." Comic grading existed well before CGC came around. Raw comics are graded when a store or seller reviews, inspects, and assigns a grade based on industry standards. CGC books are "slabbed." And there's absolutely no guarantee that any CGC slabbed book has an accurate grade. Raw books, however, can be inspected by potential buyers, to see if the grade assigned is fair. All that said, I agree that people shouldn't rush to de-slab their books. Because you and other CGC fans still buy slabbed books. They are still a big part of the comic community. I hope CGC becomes more consumer friendly as a result of these scandals and does better. Regardless, I'm personally sticking to raw books.
@RegieCollects11 ай бұрын
You do realize that two things can exist once right? To call something a graded comic doesn’t mean that something else can’t also be graded (e.g. raw comics). Heck, CBCS also grades but doesn’t encapsulate raw books. To call them “slabbed” would also not be accurate because there is self slabbing/encapsulation. I think using a generic term that is widely acceptable and understood by the hobby actually makes sense.

It’s okay to have preferences bro. But, to say one is better than the other. 🤷🏾♂️🤣 CBCS lost an estimated 300+ books post pandemic. Books were being shipped and graded inside of people’s private homes. A guy documented the submission and verification of a signature that he forged. Did he do it only once? 🤷🏾♂️ CBCS grading costs roughly the same as CGC but sells for ~20% less. CBCS has graded a fraction of the books that CGC has graded. CBCS has challenging customer service. They literally had my books in limbo for 360 days and customer service was no help. And, you say that they are better? Nah. All grading companies have positives and negatives. All of them. They’ve contributed mightily to the escalating cost/value of books that its drawn in people who couldn’t give a flying s**t about the medium and along with auction houses and eBay. The common collector is left out in the cold and will never be able to afford a majority of common books because of speculation and FOMO.. Always good getting a reply from you my friend..👍

I struggle with this argument because CGC has been grading comics for 23 years and it’s really in the last few years have we seen stupid prices. I believe that it was the convergence of several things: free money, pandemic, MCU effect, graded books, etc. I say this because when you look at the trend data prior to the pandemic, prices were generally flat. What data do you have which shows grading has been the major favor?

No. I have dedicated areas for my collection. And, they are generally neat and organized.

Wives are the same regardless of the country. Lol. I do not consider my collection hoarding. It’s considered a hobby that I enjoy. Moreover there are worse hobbies. 🤣😂

@@RegieCollects actual comics will be worth more in the future And the fact you won't be able to enjoy holding a comic and turning the pages my comment has to do with comics your video is about comics clearly
@RegieCollects11 ай бұрын
Huh? Today’s comics will be worth more in the future due to the fact that they are older, survived, remain in good condition, are sought after by collectors, etc. The fact that new comics in the future are released digitally has little to no impact on the value of an old comic. Just like a facsimile has no impact on an old comic. An NFT has no impact on an old comics.
