A nice cheese tip is that most hard cheese such as cheddar, swiss and parmesan cheese are perfectly fine without refrigeration. As long as the cheese hasn't experienced extreme heat and is sealed it is safe to eat at room temperature to slightly above. The refrigeration of hard cheese just makes it last longer but can affect flavor and aging if not wrapped appropriately whether its stored in the fridge or on the counter.

One suggestion of caution in case you found veggies, there was a massive Nationwide recall on tomatoes and in our shopping this past week, we found another jar of Jif PB with the number 425 in it that was part of a Nationwide recall 1 months ago. Please check those food trays before leaving them for other people so you and others will not get sick. Thanks again....we love you two!

Salami, dry sausages and cured meats like that don't really expire by the dates listed. You'll know if they were exposed to heat because they will have started to expel oil. You can freeze the extra ones. My Sicilian grandparents would keep salami and dry sausages for ages in the fridge. If you go to real Italian delis you'll see dry cured meats hanging from the ceilings, of course it probably never gets above 68 or 70 degrees in those delis.

I bought a lot of supplies and then the shutin situation began. I never did start doing it. @Breafkast is the only diver I kept in my sub list because of just her personality. What's not to love.

Thanks so much for following along! We started diving in 2012 after we watched a documentary called "Dive!" at Alex's university. It was unreal how much food was being rescued from the trash, so we thought we'd give it a try. We didn't have to buy groceries anymore - literally everything we needed we could find in the trash! (Of course that was when most dumpsters were unlocked and compactors were rare). It was and still is nerve wracking, but it's always worth it :)
@theIAMofME Жыл бұрын
@@breafkast I use to work at a grocery store with a compactor. If people only knew just how much food was thrown away. Food banks were picky. That also made me mad. When you grow food and know how long it takes for harvest...it's sickening to see a red bell pepper with a small spot on it tossed. All kinds of produce. Packaged and processed food was worse. This was at a Sprouts.

Too bad they couldn't do a curb alert to that dumpster location...just include that it needs a dive and 'take at your own risk'... but for sure other divers would trust it more and might have a network to share the fridge goods.... they can't put it in the free pantries or aren't supposed to anyway, if it needs a fridge. Some areas, not by me in midwest but up north its more common, have a fridge along with the free pantry box...that would really change what could be donated there.

Alex and Kelly, I love your videos so much. When you left the food in front of the dumpster, to let people know that there was more food there. It reminds me…. During the big Depression in the 1930’s, there was so many men out of work. They would travel on the trains and go from farm to farm and ask for work or a meal. They would leave carvings in the fence or in front of the farmers house. They would have symbols, for example a piece of pie meant they will feed you well. They had all kinds of symbols indicating work, food, whether they were kind or mean. I hope you read this. Love to you both & Bones too ❤️

All that cheese and crackers and meat you can freeze that stuff. If you have room to freeze it you can always give it away at your yard sales straight out of the freezer. You can also drive around and if you see homeless people just hand that stuff out to them. If you leave it there at the dumpster, for someone else to pick up, it may end up getting too warm. If the meats and cheeses are shrink-wrapped you can just stick them in your refrigerator and they will stay good past the expiration

any of the prepared meats and all the cheese will be fine as long as its still cold. both of them have a certain amount of preservatives (salt. a lot of salt) and in the old days most of that stuff wasnt kept cold anyway. salami was hung up and any sort of sausage, especially smoked, was also hung. kept dry itll last a long, long time. bring an ice chest why dont you? drop a blue ice in there or a bag 'o' ice and voila! they dont get warm anyways.

Im new to the channel but do you guys ever worry about recalls or "destroys" when it comes to food you get out of the dumpster? I worked for Dollar Tree for 7 years and we'd have to throw away certain foods that were recalled and had to be "destroyed" which we didnt open we just tossed in the trash. But our dumpsters were chained and locked up so nobody could get in there. Im a major Slim Jim eater and one time we had to throw out 4 cases of 100 Slim Jims due to a recall from the company which never gave a reason to why we had to destroy it. It crushed my soul to see 400 Slim Jims go into the dumpster and I couldn't have a single one of them because we didnt know if there was glass, metal, or chemicals, ect found in them. So all the Slim Jims you found brought back some PTSD for me. 😂

I love the passion you have to donate animal shelters , Books and the little pantries. Can you donate the food to a homeless shelter? Nursing homes can use those adult briefs. Nursing homes are on a tight budget and can barely afford the food that they bought to feed the residents that live there and they can always use toiletries and things of that nature. Anything right now that can be donated they can use also learn more. Just letting you know if you don’t know.

If this helps, as Wisconsinite, cheese that is cold can be left out for about an hour in 80 degree temp. 70 degree, we usually don't go longer than 90. Also, check on it while its out - if warms, it can always be put back in the fridge or freeze it. Freezing it makes it last a few months past it date (not the spread though). My parents even took cheese from WI to Colorado which took about 4 days, all they did was pack ice around the cheese.
