I know this was made nearly 5 years ago, but the “Do I feel lucky” line is a reference to a movie called Dirty Harry. It stars Clint Eastwood and he plays a cop named Harry who shoots criminals with a 45 magnum colt.

The etymological root of churlish (churl) is the same as Charles. The root means "man." Churlish gained the connotation of being a male commoner or ruffian.

Thanks for these great videos! On another note, I never realized this as a child, but this game pales in comparison to Space Quest 5. SQ 5 had a story and character development. This game, so far, is just a bunch of wandering with some poorly fleshed out characters and lame jokes scattered throughout.

They most likely got it from the same sample library as LucasArts did with DOTT. It's also used in SQ1VGA and SQ5, not to mention a little-known tv show from the 60s called Star Trek.

here's a line of dialogue that would have tied in space quest 4 and made his weird attraction to Beatrice make more sense when Roger talks about Beatrice instead of fear the narrator says " Doesn't he remember future son. beautiful mother. Hologram. wow this numbskull really can't keep it in his head"

I googled for that manual but I think you have to either already have it from the original game or download it when you buy the game. I just really wanted to understand how you solve that datacorder puzzle.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 жыл бұрын
The manual has process-of-elimination type hints, like "this chip goes in this socket and must use this IRK, but *this* chip CANNOT use this IRK and MUST be next to this other chip," etc. etc. It takes for-fucking-ever to do. :)

Interestingly enough, according to the Space Quest Omnipedia, Wikipedia, and IMDb, Sharpei is voiced by Lucille Bliss, whereas Stellar is voiced by Carol Bach y Rita. However, you are correct that Sharpei and Stellar share the same voice actor, as the end-game credits clearly show that Sharpei and Stellar are both voiced by Carol. To further support this, Sharpei's voice sounds INCREDIBLY similar to the voice of Valanice in King's Quest VII, who was also voiced by Carol Bach y Rita. Do you have any idea where the notion that Lucille Bliss voicing someone in Space Quest VI would have come from? I haven't found any evidence to support this or even show that she was in any way attached to the project. Looking forward to more, as always!

I was going to mention that at the end of the game. Yes, the manual - as well as all the online repositories that took the credits from the manual - got it wrong. The credits in the game are the correct ones. (The manual also says that Denny Delk voiced Cmdr. Kielbasa. He didn't.) As for *why* ... I have no idea. Someone screwed up. It wasn't Scott, 'cos he was personally there directing the voice actors, and got the credits correct in the game itself. Guess whoever put the manual together screwed it up.

Asides from the forehead I don't see Stellar being that much different from a sultry LSL girl. In general I appreciate the design sense in this game, specially Roger's almost emaciated look that makes him look extra pathetic. Can't say the same about dialogue and story thus far... Stellar popping out of nowhere sure seems like an awful waste of what could have been an interesting bit of story. I mean, Roger's continued existence depends on him getting together with Beatrice and siring the son that's going to save him. So what CAN he do if he turns out to like someone else more? But no, she just shows up and he's simply afraid of "angering Beatrice" because ha ha, "strong women" in the 90s, am I right?
@spacequesthistorian

Stellar was introduced because Josh (and Mark and Scott, too!) were sick of the corner they'd painted themselves in with in SQ4. To be honest, I don't think they ever planned on doing more Space Quest games after 4, so that's why they thought they could get away with it. So, Josh introduced Stellar to make a bit of a love triangle thing happen. Only problem is, I don't think it quite got introduced the way he intended -- or at least not explained as good as he'd hoped.

So when Stellar heard the narrator did she break the...5th wall? I mean, I guess it is a fourth wall break, but it's more like she is doing it through association? You're right, man. That is so damn weird!

I actually did find that manual eventually! No joke, a month or so ago, I was looking at this very video to capture archival footage from, and I came across that remark of mine that "eventually there'll be a video on my channel titled 'I FOUND MY POPULAR JANITRONICS'"... and I went, "I should really do that." Haven't gotten around to it yet.

I remember there being some discussion on whether it was a SNES controller or a Gravis Gamepad back in the day. And I think we actually came to the conclusion that it was a Gravis Gamepad. They looked very similar to SNES controllers but with some subtle differences. Also, merry flakkin' Christmas/New Year to you, too!

I am pretty sure my copy of SQ6 game with the corrected solution on a single sheet of paper. It was either that or I totally cheated after I couldn't work it out.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 жыл бұрын
If memory serves, there were some reissues of the Space Quest Collection where they forgot to include the manuals, essentially rendering SQ6 unwinnable. Sierra had to post the Datacorder solution on the website. From that point on, I think they completely gave up the pretense that it was "copy protection."

I clearly enjoyed SQ6 more than you did. Sure, it has its problems and the plot is meh, but I really enjoyed the locations you get to explore, the art style, (and music too), Gary Owens goodness and of course, that mid 90's nostalgia it gives me when we got our first CD-ROM drive. Also, to be fair, the earlier SQ games were guilty of bad puns too. (:

@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 7 жыл бұрын
I just took it as Joss meant to make it more in-universe and interesting, how I don't know. But really, they should still have put it in the manual because it would be way more frustrating having the clues on a different screen and having to switch back and forth. I thought it was a fun logic puzzle, even if it did slow the game down and was more like Dr. Brain then Space Quest.
@richardperspective
@richardperspective 7 жыл бұрын
No, it was meant to be a comic. I'm just curious how the very finicky instructions could have been subtly put into comic form.

Yeah, an in-game comic (according to the historian), I don't see a contradiction in what we said. I wonder also how it would have read.
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 7 жыл бұрын
From what I remember, it was supposed to be on a "This Month's Puzzle" page, same as how it's presented in the SQ6 manual. So, not explained in the comic itself. The comic was just for a goof.
