I love how detailed the animation of Roger's Grief stricken face was, however rushed the suspect relationship was. You know how they could have made the players connect with Stellar faster? Give her role to Flo. Or Zondra. Hell even Droole could have worked, if they had dared. Maybe not WD40 or Cliffy. Flo at least was already crushing on him, and could have worked even with the whole divorced-cougar thing going on. At least with any of these people were established characters that don't need an infodump of exposistion, and we'd care if they had a funeral. But then we couldn't do that sweet "Streetcar Named Desire" gag - that was worth it.

Or - I'm just spitballing here - have it be Beatrice. That would have seriously clenched some buttocks. But, nope, had to go with the unfulfilled love triangle thing.
@MagusMarquillin7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know, _cleche drama_ - a little too King's Questy? But at least having a love triangle where it's between true love and potentially wiping out your existence and the lives of millions has some unique story potential - I think Joss was on to something there. Maybe Roger could have grown to despise Bea for some contrivance. We still barely know her. Hard to know how it would have turned out, if the unmade sequels would even have had consistent developer vision.
@richardperspective7 жыл бұрын
I suspect that Stellar is at least in part down to the original title being a Carmen Sandiego pun ("Where In Corpsman Stellar Santiago Is Roger Wilco?"). Even with the cough-cough nature of the term not being as strong in the US, I don't see Sierra putting out a game box with the words 'Beatrice Wankmeister' in a big jaunty font.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
@Magus Marquillin I'm pretty sure it would turn out the other way around, like Beatrice growing to despise Roger for a number of not-so-contrived reasons. ;) Actually, wait until you see me play Incinerations (if you haven't seen it already). Bea is shown as being more than a little fed up with Roger's antics, and I think it comes off as very genuine. Richard doesn't, but we can have that fight later. ;)
@MagusMarquillin7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, your probably both right. Thanks for the reminder to play incinerations, hard to believe I put it off for so long, but I've got to do it before you give away the puzzles. What's the order of things for you after SQ6? SQ2vga, VSB and conclude with incinerations? Are you going to do SQ1VGA, or the other fan games?

After spending countless days trying to figure out the datacoder puzzle (didn't have internet yet) the crash just after the sickbay was a kick in the teeth. Also, never knew about the random Cedric line!
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
The random Cedric line completely threw me as a kid, since I'd never played KQ5 then. Error 47 was absolutely a kick in the teeth, no question. At the time I played it, I had a 486 DX/2, so my computer just breezed through that part, no problem. It wasn't until I started getting reports for the Space Quest FAQ that "Space Quest 6 is an unplayable mess!" that I learned about the horrors that will forever live on in our hearts as Error 47.

I believe the "stairs were banned during the Ford administration" line at around 5:00 was a reference to Gerald Ford and a rather infamous incident (at the time) involving him, a flight of airplane steps, and a lack of balance on his part. There's a similar gag in Space Quest 3.

10:55 Yes! I noticed that too! why did the developers want to bury SQ 5 like it never happened? I'm sorry if you already explained that. If that's the case I must've missed it.

The short answer is: Josh Mandel was told he could design Space Quest 5, but then Sierra turned around and gave it to Mark Crowe instead.

The "STELLLAAARRRR!" shout was actually a "A Streetcar Named Desire" reference, which given how old that play is, would make it definitely an "OK Boomer" moment, had The Simpsons not featured an episode where Marge plays Stella Dubois in a musical version of that play (which is how millennials like me first heard about it).

Is there a story behind the caricature of yourself on the bottom left? I just keep wondering about it.
@spacequesthistorian5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is! And it's going to come across as bragging, so I apologize for that in advance. The caricature was drawn by Mark Crowe, one of the Two Guys From Andromeda. A friend of mine who works in animation named Christian Giegerich took that caricature and placed it inside a StarCon logo, thus creating the SQH logo in its final form. I've been using it since 2012 and I'll never change it. I love it so much. :)

A couple of random questions that I've never thought of before. Do you think Kielbasa is in on the Sharpei's plans for Roger, or do you think that she just lied to him? Is Kielbasa a villain? Also, does Xenon ever get mentioned in Space Quest V or VI? It seems to have just been completely forgotten about with all of the StarCon stuff. Just curious. Looking forward to more!
