Greetings Donna, I finally got around to making your doctored up red velvet cake, but I made a few changes to it. Instead of using red velvet cake mix, I used Betty Crocker's white cake mix with the pudding included. I also added 1 TBSP of AmeriColor super red color jel ( the same red food coloring you used), two TBSP of cocoa power(leveled), two TBSP of vinegar, and I didn't add any coffee. My cake turned out to be blood red and I love it !!! I'm gonna keep experimenting with this recipe. The cake is great the way it turned out, but next time I'm gonna see what happens if I add some sour cream...😋

Bless your heart! You are really trying, but I so agree with you. By the time you do all of this, you could have made a cake from scratch. I used almost all of your hack. cause I forgot the coffee and didn't have enough butter & no chocolate oil; but I had plenty of buttermilk so I used buttermilk as sub for butter. Oh wow, I am not a fan of the boxed red velvet. But I really loved this version. Now I am wondering if I should invest in chocolate oil.... mmmm bet that made it even better. I remember my grandmother making this when I was a kid and your recipe taste more like what I remember her scratch red velvet tasting like.

I hate the extreme fluffiness/ holes in boxed mix since they changed the formulas. I have found that as soon as I pull cake out of oven I place paper towels on top and cover with pot holder, I then press down on cake, all over, not too hard , but it does help to make cake more dense. Also Donna, I know you love Creme bouquet, but have you ever tried "sweet buttery dough" flavor emulsion from Lorrann? It's amazing in yellow/pound cakes. Smells divine!
