Duncan... What you were trying to describe when changing how to talk while on the court vs how you talk off the court is called "code switching". The black community does this often when we go to work at a predominantly white workplace. Changing your normal vernacular to adjust to the dominant culture you're working in...

It is because you mirror that which you observe. If you play with people like that, you start to act that way. exact same as picking up accents.
