OMG! I need to find people like this where I live. New Jersey drummers I've met so far would never do something like this. I miss my drum pals from TX so much! You guys are awesome!
So bloody great. Amazing to watch these people really connect with the rhythm and their percussive instrument, play and dance so well, and be so obviously happy. What a joy to watch.

I'm sharing this comment as a result of some of the visceral negative comments that I read below. I've worked w/ traditional West African drum & dance artists from Senegal, Guinea, Mali, (& a little bit w/ Liberia & Ivory Coast as well), since 1990 in the Bay Area in California. In particular, I've studied w/ Abdoulaye Diakite, Mamady Keita, Famoudou Konate & Bolokada Conde, & I've played for the dancers Allasane Kane, Youssouf Koumbassa, Alseny Soumah, Naby Bangoura & Mabiba Baegne (Congolese dancer, but she teaches West African drumming & dancing as well. All of that is not said to boast about my experience, but is written to give clarity, background & context to what I'm sharing. The Dunun Dance is a more modern invention developed first in the late 1990's (to the best of my knowledge), & the West African teachers have been sharing it w/ students of all cultural backgrounds & skin colors for the past approx 20 years. They teach this newer style @ drum & dance camps where people travel to study, as well as at local ongoing classes held around the globe. All the artists that I have worked w/ share their cultural drum & dance styles w/ open arms & hearts as a way to perpetuate these beautiful cultural art forms. It is totally understandable that some people would be very protective & defensive of this traditional African Art form, but most of the negative comments seem to be lacking the context of how this information (Dunun Dance in particular) is being shared by Guinean teachers around the planet, so it is natural that students are going to be sharing what the've learned w/ joy & exuberance. Of course, we must all pay respect to our teachers, & one of the primary ways we can do that is to be dedicated students that bring integrity & quality to what we do. Obviously, there are deep wounds around the globe regarding colonialism, racism & appropriation, but wouldn't you rather have newer generations studying & sharing what they've learned from Africa & helping to support the performing artists & teachers from Africa?. I have friends from all over the globe as a result of studying/playing music & playing for dance classes, & it seems to be an expression that exemplifies how we are all connected. Also, there is just a reality to the demographics of countries & regions on the planet, some for benign reasons that mean most people look more similar culturally, some for vey unfortunate reasons because of colonization & virtual genocide, & some areas (cities & countries) that have a highly mixed population from years of immigration. All of that is to say, that although this video & the performers in it may not have a huge mixed cultural representation, it seems that is a result of both the current demographics of Australia & who is currently studying the drum & dance in their area, & I whole-heartedly doubt that it reflects any exclusion or lack of openness towards cultures around the world, especially people from Africa or of African descent. Lastly, I wanna give props to the musicians & dancers who obviously worked hard to prepare the dance/drum & share this video, & I encourage you to trust your love & joy, & continue to build the bridges that connect us all! Inike

Well Wade. Thank you for taking the time to articulate your perspective on this complex matter! I read every comment and sometimes I don't know where to begin to respond because everybody carries their own history and cultural perspective and not many people stop to think about who we are in Australia. We would be SO happy to have more African dance and drum teachers here and often bring artists from the other side of the world because the reality is that there are very few teachers (especially of the Manding style) living and working here. We love the energy that comes from African drum and dance culture and want to support the art form, and the artists, in every way we can. I am very excited by the way this energy can bring people together from all over the world. Anike.

I couldn't agree more. Music brings us together. Little people's pettiness rips us apart. Also, although this type of performance does not interest me in any way, I admire the hard work these ladies put into both the dance and the music.
