Thank you for not treating it like a comic book movie. I was mentored one summer in 1976 by Frank Herbert in Washington State. On the last day of my time with him, he and his wife had me over for dinner where Frank cooked us homemade lasagna while his wife told me of her part in the creation of the Dune story. I had the entire file of everything Paul ever did in his life including things that were never in the books because they played no place in the plot. It was single space typed and about a foot tall and I had it on my lap. I know that Paul fell out of a tree when he was a small boy and broke one of his arms. The Mentats healed it and it never effected him or the storyline. As someone who spent quality time learning from a master, I know that Mr Herbert would have approved that it has a more epic feel than comic book movies could accomplish and is the best representation of the novel of all that tried.

Wow, that is an excellent memory and insight into the man whom wrote the book. I read it in 1972 and again in 1985 or so. I read a couple of the later books in the series but could not get through God Emperor of Dune. I saw the first movie a few years ago and again when I bought it on DVD. It was pretty good but some of the worm scenes just didn't cut it and neither did the video game the Emperor played. I thought Virginia Madsden was supremely beautiful. I saw her in Sideways and I had the distinct impression I had seen her before but could not recall a movie with her in it. The problem with Dune is that is too rich in plot, subplot, background information and how to get the special effects without cheapening the entire movie. Making 2 sections is getting it almost right. I think 3 sections would be better but I don't think anyone would be able to sit through 9 hours of one movie, that is, unless one read the book. I saw Dune 2000 (I think that was it) about 2 years ago when it was on KZbin. It was fairly good. I saw Dune last year on the regular screen. It was only on IMAX for one day. This time, I made sure I got tickets for the IMAX. Feb 29, 3pm I'll let you know how it was.
