Over an hour for me after viewing #3 in IMAX, walking out to men in Leicester Sq, London with loud speakers and sandwich boards shouting about Jesus against the counter shouts of free Qu'rans being handed out...whilst the queue for the next showing built up right by them. I may have shouted Lisan Al'Gaib...maybe...just maybe...😳💪

The Chani change, like Denis said, was to enhance the “cautionary tale” of Paul… the way faith blinds people while others use it to control and gain power….. Thank you for a such a great dialogue. This actually reminds me quite a bit of the discussion after the Lord of the Rings films, and if anything, led to renewed appreciation and interest in Tolkien’s works. It certainly heightened my appreciation for the books and the Professor’s other works and the reputation for the film’s themselves has actually increased over the past 20 years. As far as Dune goes I really think the cautionary, environmental, and social commentary are as important today, as they are for all times, and I specially leaned into that part of the discussion. I am really not interested in experiencing these films as adaptation, but that takes a good deal of compartmentalization. In the end, when I want to read a book, I will read a book. When I want to see a movie I will do that. But people should feel free to experience them as they please and be ok with disliking them - as long as that respect is mutual.

In the first movie, there's a scene where Gaius Helen Mohiam asks the Baron to allow Jessica and Paul to survive the attack, saying, "allow them the dignity of exile." However, in the second movie, Gaius tells Irulan that the Bene Gesserit wanted to eliminate the Atreides for becoming "insolent"; and Irulan replies saying the plan failed because Paul Atreides was actually alive. It seems contradictory because Gaius intervened for Paul's life in the first film. After all, did Gaius want Paul dead or not? Did I miss anything?

What an amazing cinematic experience! I loved the visuals, although like many others I'm not sure how I feel about some of the many story alterations compared to the book. A few of them I'm totally ok with, but others I'm not sure yet. I'm giving myself time though to think about it and will need and want to see it again, maybe twice, before I know how I really feel about it. At the very least though I take this film very seriously, and readily admit that some of the sequences are just remarkable and amazing to watch. That's something I definitely can't say about any of the prior adaptations.

When Paul kills the Baron, he gets him on the left side of the neck and says “you died like an animal”. Is this a reference to the gom jabbar of the Baron in the book? Being that it’s a test of human/animal, and that it’s in the same spot the gom jabbar is held?

I mean realistically the biggest issues I had with part 2 is Chani and Paul's relationship and Paul's sister. The weight of over 2 years before doing anything should have been there. I was fortunate enough to see a dune Double Feature in IMAX and I can’t but see the two parts as one film now. What an experience. I think I loved basically everything. There were the obvious departures, it it’s hard to imagine being the one stitching everything together to include EVERYTHING and yet have a well paced balanced entertaining film that would invite all movie goers, rather than be a completely niche film just for the handful of us book lovers and not get a trilogy because of low box office numbers… it’s a juggling act that I wouldn’t want to take on.

The wording - I can't remember if it's from the book - was really interesting. "You will die." They both came back as not quite human. The Reverend Mothers are not quite human, they're puppet masters. They're missing the small perspective that defines individual human fulfilment. That's what allows Paul to sideline Chani and choose the narrow way, he's no longer an individual, he's an amalgamation of lived memories, a collective consciousness. His care for individuals is at war with his concern for the species.

I absolutely loved both part 1 and 2 but having processed part 2 over the past couple of days, I’m really starting to notice a large sense of disappointment by some of the things they left out (especially the Guild Navigators and better showing how space folding works) or changed either due to being cut or adapted to run into part 3 of Dune Messiah, which just now got me thinking regarding Thufir missing: - Maybe some of his scenes will return in a Directors Cut / Extended Edition (which I am really hoping for despite understanding Denis’s thoughts about directors cuts) - Maybe part 3 will start directly after part 2 like part 2 did for part 1 and therefore, Thufir may actually be there at the end of part 2 but you don’t see him till the start of part 3 after Paul dispatched the Fremen on their holy war. One can hope right? 😅

Just got home from watching DUNE: PART 2 this evening. Loved it! At first, I was concerned about book details that had been left out but, as the movie unfolded, I found that I was satisfied by what story Denis did focus on. I was satisfied with Paul's evolution from the first movie to the second. When Paul declares his "terrible purpose" to the gather Fremen factions, I felt the weigh of Chalamet's performance. I liked that the Fremen of the North and South were divided about Paul's leadership. The division felt politically realistic that Paul as an outsider was in question and that not everyone would agree on such an important step in their fight for independence. It would be too easy and a cop-out if everyone readily agreed on everything. I was happy with Alia as a fetal influence from the womb. I know that Frank Herbert envisioned her as a young child but I think it would've felt unrealistic and silly for a child to act with such believable adult gravitas, capable of killing an adult. I don't think it worked for David Lynch and I don't think it would've worked for Denis either... he was smart enough to figure out a creative workaround to solve the Alia problem. I was still happy that Alia had a presence, a prescient look at her in adulthood. And lastly, I loved the epic scale of the landscape, the ships and the battles. Even though none of those things exist, I was able to suspend my disbelief in a way that did not take me out of the movie. I didn't bother me that Denis made changes to the story because it made the story feel new in a way that I could still believe it. Unless produced as a series, there's no way to realistically stay completely faithful to the book, portraying everything that I wanted to see. Movies aren't perfect because of their time constraints and hopefully Denis can add in DUNE MESSIAH what he had to leave out from DUNE PARTS 1 and 2. I loved it all. So far, I'm totally satisfied by what I saw and I want to see it again while it's on the big screen.

Glad to see most critics caught most of the flaws in the film. People are starting to open up about their problems with part one (I kinda figured). Part Two is a 10/10. I'm glad to see that while my Rise of Skywalker concerns were legitimate, the movie made right on those worries. It did what I thought it could not, and I enjoyed it the whole way through. P.S. I somehow saw it on February 29th. Public showing.

I haven't read the books. Watched both the movies and loved both. Can anyome please tell me why the other houses refuse to honor Paul's ascension? Duke Leto was very popular, so much that the Bene Gesserit was able to plant seeds of jealousy in the Emperors mind. Right? Also mother Mohiam said to Irulan that she planned to end the Atreides bloodline and also pleaded the Baron to spare Jessica and Paul. Was she lying to Irulan? Doesn't Irulan have Truthsayer (or whatever) skills? Or she was wanted to control Paul using his desire of revenge? Just asking.

"Also mother Mohiam said to Irulan that she planned to end the Atreides bloodline." She kind of did, whether Paul survived or not. She was planning to constantly inbreed them with Harkonnens. The daughter that Paul was supposed to be? She was destined, according to the Bene Gesserit plan, to marry or at least breed with Feyd Rautha, who they saw as manipulable, malleable, just as his father was. Who knows how many times they interfered with traits in the Atreides line they did not care for? Who was Leto's mother? Was she picked by the Bene Gesserit? Seems likely.

@@secretsofduneIt's humanity, there are folk who believe that the 80's film is superior, irrespective of how objectively any 1st year film/performing arts student could show otherwise. So of course there are going to be book fans who believe that because "x" is left out/altered the film(s) is somehow inferior, despite part 1 & 2 capturing enough of the story well enough that it is clearly an authentic telling of the Dune tale. For me, Villeneuve's genius in these films is how authentic the changes are, given the passing of time since the original works, etc. I like the diversity amongst the Fremen, even if that's along the line of Northerners, which aren't quite like the 'city Fremen' of the books, but still provide some difference amongst a planet-spanning culture. I like Chani's change, because it creates a depth/complexity of character that wasn't in the books, and for non-book readers creates a more obvious "What Paul is doing in not morally good, even though you may have fallen for his charm." I don't think the Fremen should speak something sounding like Arabic, languages change radically over the span of hundreds of years, little alone tens of thousands - I don't think Herbert would have been upset by any of that, apart from he was someone who clearly understood artistic licence, he accepted his own limitations. Like the first film missing the banquet scene, and the mentat's and navigators not getting much/any expose of merit, I do think there is plenty of room for improvement, however, that doesn't change it was a masterpiece, for me.

You're welcome. I think it's a pretty common mistake many have made or assumed, that their entire religion is made up. It definitely isn't and I'd argue that if the Mahdi legends were not among the Fremen long before a Bene Gesserit came, she would have a harder if not impossible task to establish said legend. It already had to have existed among the Fremen centuries before and that's something people miss. This obviously comes from Islam.

[WARNING! DUNE MESSIAH BOOK SPOILERS POST] I think it’s imperative to the plot for Chani to have twins, because it’s one of the main reasons Jon Snow goes north, I mean Paul walks out into the desert alone because his prescience only saw Ghanima, not Leto II (The Younger) and didn’t see TWINS, so he doesn’t want to be a burden on the tribe. Leto II The Elder and Irulan’s attempt to prevent Chani becoming pregnant (again) are easier plot lines to lose than the twins. My bigger concern is how to do Messiah without a time jump and 14year old Alia and Hayt/Duncan’s relationship that feeds into Children, even if someone other than DV picks up the reins. I’ll be sad if we don’t get Children to finish Paul’s arc and I’d prefer it be DV at the helm.

I'm dreading this - just speculation - but I suspect they will narrow opposition to Paul in Dune Messiah. I can't see DV venturing further outward into the Dune Universe at this stage. I'm guessing no Guild, no Tleilax (although maybe, since we need Hayt) and Chani's character altered so that she represents the Fremen opposition. I'm also guessing that we won't see the twins - since that opens a future story arc that DV can't resolve in this trilogy. And Alia? Not sure that's a character that we'll see developed too much either. I suspect that DV wants to close his trilogy, not establish a further franchise.

Beautiful, however... Less than 50% of what was in the movie was in the book, less than 5% of the book was in the movie. The interpretations of Giedi Prime was stunning. The Harkonnens are a more terrifying despothic state than anything ever imaginable in human history. North Korea, hyperpowerful, inescapable, a brutality barely conceivable. I thought he could have gone a little further with technological levels of the Fremen. The Sietches bit a bit too lean for me.

It's a very narrow interpretation of Dune. I'm surprised that Warner would support it. I have enjoyed it, but I feel that it will make extension of the Dune universe very challenging. It really focuses on Paul and Jessica/the sisterhood. Chani and Alia are severely altered - so much so that it would be difficult to realign those characters to the source as we move forward into Messiah. And no Mentats or Guild. It's very finely honed. It doesn't leave many opportunities to leverage the film's vocabulary to create a franchise (which is, I'm sure, what they're excited about). Beautiful films, but very narrow.

I think if they had tackled it head on, they might have gained more respect and avoided basic criticisms like that. If they really tackled the colonialism head on, used Arabic, showed two sides to humanity, those that are extreme, those that want peace. I wouldn't have seen any problem with that. I think by just offering little inspirations and hints, mostly avoiding it, they perhaps shot themselves in the foot in some regard. The criticisms have existed since Dune Part One as a result with some valid points being made by journalists and scholars.

I went to iMax twice to watch and it was even better the second time. In my first viewing the changes were naturally jarring to a long time book reader who greatly appreciates Frank Herbert's works. However, upon a second watch with my brother who knows absolutely nothing about Dune I have an even greater appreciation for this adaptation than anything previously done in the medium. This movie was always going to have aspects that disappoint book readers that expect an 1:1 adaptation that would need to be like 3x 5hr long movies. However, I believe it absolutely will not disappoint most folks at the theaters. It is bringing so many to the Dune universe, and it really drove home the most important themes of Herbert's work in a masterful way. If we are being honest there never really existed a universe where I or any other reader wouldnt want more of the book on screen. However, after reflection, my personal feelings of the changes are honestly almost entirely positive. I absolutely loved the Fremen not being a homogenous group of fanatics. It made them and the world feel so much more real. I was always pretty ambivalent towards book Chani as a character. She was always just very basic and more a vehicle to move Pauls story. So I'm very excited to see how her changes play out now that she feels like a real person and the tension is palpable. The Bene Gesserit have never been better portrayed, especially Jessica. She was always manipulative in the book, but the darkness in the movie just really sells just how much these witches plot behind the scenes. I think this portrayal sets the stage for a Bene Gesserit prequel show quite well. Which I'd love to see. The changes to Alia were very tastefully done. It was way more relatable to general audiences while still being quite faithful to the weirdness. When I told my brother about book Alia he was straight up like... "Nah, that's way too much, this was plenty weird." With the time crunch Paul was the only natural choice to kill Baron, and it was straight cold blooded. No notes. Circling back to reservations about Part 1; the presentation of the Harkkonen feels much more understandable to me now seeing the amazingly done Ghedi Prime homeworld. The infrared stylizing to signify their black sun, and hints to their "water" being contaminated with chemicals, the cold brutality of their home was all just masterful world building. It makes the Villeneuve approach to their appearances feel exponentially better than goofy mustache twirling redhead villains of the book. Plus let's be real, their sheer brutality being the focal point of their evilness plays so much better to the general audience than "redhead cursed gay pedos bad, black hair with Greek ancestors good.". That 2D archaic thinking would never fly today in a film. The movies so far have tons of great easter eggs for readers to show tribute to the source material, and I love them all. They pulled my heart strings at every turn, but I am not without criticism. My main disappointments in Part 2 lie with Thufir, the Guild and Leto 1.5 being cut. I really hope Leto 1.5 and the Guild make it into Part 3/Messiah as a sort of bridge to clean up the expedited timeline, and the animosity between Chani and Paul. Thufir sadly has no chance of happening at this point, but I do not see how you properly do Messiah without the Guild. Which leads me into the one major thread I wish was better portrayed in both movies. The Mentats/Suk Doctors and other aspects of the world that exist because of the Butlarian Jihad. However, I think we lost those fully fleshed out characters in the first movie because they were trying to secure a general audience's interest in a Part 2. They couldn't faithfully do it without an hour plus of extra exposition and difficult to portray characters in an already nearly 3hr long movie. This is understandable, but I have consistently felt Piter, Thufir and Yui deserved more time and development. Ultimately, I trust Villeneuve believed the time just wasn't there for being well received by general audiences and readers alike. If we are lucky, maybe we will get to see more of these aspects in the planned show which could afford a lot more exposition than an arthouse movie. In the end, it's not that Villeneuve can do no wrong and isn't beyond criticism. It's simply I don't agree that something isn't a masterpiece simply because it didn't fully flesh out some aspects of the source material I love. These movies are clearly staged to become one of the most important pieces of fantasy cinema since the LotR trilogy. They will make something I have loved since I was a young man so much more relatable with friends and family. I am immensely thankful we have the best director we could have ever hoped for, and I won't go out of my way to tear down what I feel is honestly the best adaptation of Dune I will likely get in my life. I will instead find a way to appreciate both the vision of Herbert and Villeneuve in their respective mediums because they're both masterpieces of their time and place.

Very good points. As a reader of the books and just saw the Imax version, you have valid points. Me being the selfish reader of the book, I wish both films were longer and had those scenes. But, it is extremely difficult to transpose to film. Also, the division among the Fremen is more realistic. In a planetwide society, even within the tribes there will be differences between them. So, not all the people will be homogeneous and united following Paul. That would seem too simplistic in the real world.

I was disappointed by the lack of emotional build up in the movie, no Leto ll death, no Hawat death and the long live the fighters moment felt a little empty it lacked a speech where paul would talk about how the Fremen have been oppressed for decades by the harkonnen and how Paul’s people was also massacred, slowly cheering the Fremen and us the audience up and then climaxing the speech with saying Long live the fighters ! Why was Shishakli a traitor ? A Fremen would never work with Harkonnen or the emperor to betray his own. I didn’t really understand the purpose of the first scene where they kill Harkonnen and then take their water, the scene is very long and this time could’ve been used to give us Leto II or Hawat

My Dune 2 ending explanation. Paul can, thanks to his power, see all possible futures, he has deduced that only one path will lead to freedom for the Fremen, so he finds himself forced to make decisions that go against his morals. I see Chani's character at the end of Dune Part 2 as Diane Keaton's in The Godfather Part 1, when the door closes on Michael Corleone. First of all, Chani is angry and frustrated because Paul is using the Fremen's beliefs to his advantage and making them slaves to him. Chani wants the Fremen to fight for themselves, to be equal among themselves, to fight to be free, but not to fight for a leader who alienates them (they have already been quite alienated from the Harkonens). She is also angry because the man she loves escapes her and no longer entirely belongs to her, since he becomes this messianic figure. For her, Paul is not this false prophet but simply Paul Muad'Dib Usul, the man with whom she fell in love. Additionally, at the end during the final meeting with the Emperor, Chani is upset by Paul's marriage proposal to Irulan and terrified by his choice to attack the other great houses as she fears for the many victims that this will do in her people. That's why she leaves at the end of the film, she doesn't want to break down and goes to calm down outside, she's on the verge of tears, she feels cornered. Chani loves Paul and for love, she will have to accept to suffer in silence, to be a woman in the shadows, the one who knows Paul best, her pillar. It’s a very feminist scene, a tribute to all these women in the shadows behind a great man. I find that Chani in the film is more interesting than the one in the book because her more nuanced position makes her more tragic and helps show how much she loves Paul.

Okay, so I just came back from the cinema, and I have so much to digest for sure. But I am sure of one thing. I am one of those who haven't read the books, and yet I noticed that Chani felt very modern, and you were also debating it, whether it was a good change or not. I feel like you can have a pick, for sure. Which one captivated you the most? Probably when you read the books, you kind of fantasize of that support full of love and faith. But in the movie, it works so much due to the inner tension. It's not about a war outside, it's about what he knows he is risking. Losing Chani is definitely the highest stake! Besides, it shows you the inner war of love and hubris we all have. What an experience... incredible. I loved all those beautiful and fresh cinematic sequences (so many things to highlight in here), the structure and the narrative (and all thanks to that odd experiment Villeneuve did, of giving us so much exposition in the first part), the acting, the sound design, of course the soundtrack (which is really just a highlight that comes from the first part).... I am astonished. I am surprised. I was NOT expecting this. Not at this level, oh no... Villeneuve... oh boy...he is the man. The Messiah!!!

Although I was looking forward to seeing Thufir Hawat & Count Fenring, they were not necessary to the story. I'm glad they were cut out of the film. I liked what they did with Chani. She was an ethnic Fremen who wanted the best for her people. She wasn't into all the religious ideology. I wasn't expecting that, so it was a pleasant surprise. What they did with Alia was excellent. The character was present in the narrative but in a way that wasn't silly or awkward. Well done. The dynamic between the more secular Fremen of the North and the Fundamentalists of the South was a positive addition. The hesitancy of Paul moving south because he knew what that leads to was nice to see. He wanted to be ethical and not harm innocent people. But he eventually gave in and allowed the Jihad to occur. The scene where he finally gives into his dark side and embraces his Harkonnen heritage was superb. The Bene Gesserit manipulation of events was a pleasure to watch. And finally, I liked what they did with Feyd. His character was explored in a way that was interesting and not just as a set piece there to play the foil.

The movie itself was stunningly beautiful, well-paced, and well written, but I have my reservations about calling it a masterpiece. While the messianic message and dangers of the "messiah complex" was a pivotal part of the book, much too much was left out. Alia was a critical character in the original book. Cutting her out took what could have been a very interesting character out of the mix. I was also disappointed that the Spacing Guild and Thufir Hawat were missing from the story. Additionally, how they threatened the Spice was not practical. Nukes would likely have not destroyed the worms, but pouring water into a pre-spice mass would have killed the worms and destroy the spice completely. The Guild knew that, and hence submitted to Paul's rule (he who can destroy a thing, controls a thing). Finally, I have to admit they are "woking" this story. Chani simply wasn't this important as a character as they are making her out to be in this movie. Yes, there is a strong love bond between Paul and Chani, but it is a sub-plot and not the major thread. They do realize she dies in the next story, right?

@@letosgoldenpath1993 - it’s okay to have women in movies… Kynes’ sex wasn’t central to his character, and the actress they cast was good in the role, and I even think ecology is sort of a feminine science, nurturing plants and caring for the environment and all. and expanding Chani’s character to give her a larger role isn’t “woking…” I don’t even think the expansion was necessarily tied to her character, the skeptical side of the Fremen just needed to be portrayed, and Chani was the best vessel for that. I am at peace with the long, torturous character development issues, which convincingly removed the difficulty in believing Paul was consumed by fate and not a caricature. That burden was a make or break deal. I suppose that I wanted to see more exposition about spice's importance and its use by the Guild. Perhaps part three will do some of that when they introduce Edric, and more strangeness using the Tleilaxu element behind Hayt. Alia will be a wonderful, complex character I will savor in Denis' treatment. I don't see why the twins couldn't be in part three early except where Irulan needs something to do vis a vis her complicity in their conception. Edit: I am still confounded that Denis doesn't just release the cut footage separately from the finished product. I can hardly believe he is playing some profit long-game based on scarcity psychology, but that footage represents scenes which may never be filmed ever again.

As a huge fan of the source material for close to 30 years, I’ve always loved the way Frank used the character of Paul to comment on how fallible people are when religion and leadership get involved. As an agnostic person, I’ve always identified most strongly with those undertones. For me personally, Chani has always felt a bit disjointed and one dimensional when compared to the other women in Dune. While a departure from the source material, I much prefer her as depicted in this film as more than just another person who blindly goes along with the belief as Paul being the messiah. Her love for Paul is second to her love for her people. Her seeing their blind faith to Paul as their eventual undoing makes her a far more interesting character than just the compliant bearer of his children, especially considering how powerful all the other women are in this story.

No, the efforts to build support took years , not months. I could go on. All these decisions are not based on the medium: they are simply what the people running the show wanted to do. They didn't want Dune: they wanted a movie based on Dune. Since it is their version, despite promising to deliver something faithful, they can be criticised for it. And they should be criticised for it if you want a decent Dune Messiah film. Praising a bad script will only bring you more bad scripts. Remember Game of Thrones?

Have people forgotten how adaptations work? If you’re feeling like this is just a soulless committee movie, this isn’t it. The changes made in this adaptation are all pretty reasonable considering the timescale they’re working with and the focus they have. I miss the dinner scene. I miss Thufir. But I can see why they’d cut it. As for everyone complaining about the changes to Chani and Stilgar, their changes mostly serve as for audience accessibility and for just general entertainment. Having Stilgar and Chani literally be on two sides of the Fremen spectrum make it clearer to the audience that this is a contested issue and highlights how much the fanaticism changes the status quo the further into the plot they get. It’s more entertaining to see Chani love Paul but still reject the events to come for her people. Stilgar also brings a good level of humor now that Duncan Idaho is gone who was the main source of levity. If you think there shouldn’t be humor and these characters shouldn’t have more agency to be closer to the book than I agree. There should be a perfect adaptation with more nuance and time for each character. However this still keeps the theme of dangerous charismatic leaders in tact, which I would consider the overall point of Dune. They even spell it out because they’re worried the audience would lose that focus. Which is again, a loss of nuance to make sure it is still accessible to the general masses without abandoning the message.
