Not only can a movie like Dune change the landscape, but a new generation of filmmakers like yourself who are aware and think the same. I think the same and hope to make films the same way, but Im not at that level yet, but hopefully, many others will be in the future. I, too, have a franchise I'm passionate about that I would like to adapt one day and not just for a paycheck.

I work in the film industry too, for 15 years. I couldn’t agree more, I’ve been saying the same thing to my peers for a long long time now. But I’m just a lowly stuntman so I don’t have much of a voice haha. People love movies when they’re risky, original, engaging stories with human performances by great actors. I feel like Hollywood has strayed away the past few decades from what made it a powerhouse of culture, art, and entertainment for the past 100 years. I’m finally seeing a change in audience response to films the past year with the only big hits being high quality story driven and director/actor driven films. Hopefully this bucks the trend! You just earned a sub!

Thanks!! And that's awesome! Yeah I'm hopeful right now, but I do think movies will have to adjust to a new landscape with streaming and with less people going to the movies. It seems like IMAX is still having a great time right now though.

Thanks!! Me too, Denis said he’s taking his time with his script, which is definitely the move even if it takes longer. I think it will break from the story of the book more so than the first two movies which are very faithful adaptations

Hey, Isaiah here, great work on your youtube gig so far. So primarily just pertaining to your director-led movie point-I don't necessarily agree with the idea that returning to director led films would necessarily make anything better. You legitimately could have a really greatly led director-led movie or a really terrible one, or a movie that had a lot of studio/producer/other creative interference that's really good. Just to a cite an older example, Empire Strikes Back wasn't written (story was, not screenplay though) nor directed by George Lucas, yet it's downright one of the best films of all time. Meanwhile, Dave Filoni created and wrote for the entirety of Ahsoka, was an executive producer, directed some of the episodes (so it's safe to say that he had 100% or close to 100% handling on that series), yet good lord Ahsoka shows he cannot write better than a blind fingerless man trying to attempt calligraphy. Gotta give the role of the producer more credit where it's due with all the control they have at hand instead of just lauding primarily director led things as the best thing; if done right a producer's insight and restrictions legitimately could save a young director from falling into career suicide. I'd argue it just comes down to "are you doing quality control right or not" rather than whether it's director led or not.
@GabrielCarusetta
@GabrielCarusetta 2 ай бұрын
Yeah good point! The role of the producer/studio exec is often overlooked, and there are way more players involved than just the director. That being said, I’m noticing a trend of movies where the director/producer/writer has almost no creative control, and I think generally that has led to some pretty bad movies

Big movie studios used to understand that to maximise success, they have to have a distribution mix of guaranteed hits and artistic gambles. With the establishment and quickly solidifying respected bankable auteurs like Nolan and Villeneuve, I hope these big studios will be forced to abandon their near franchise-only business model.

Yeah something has to change economically, and many directors are calling for Hollywood to make fewer, more original, less expensive movies

Great video and examination of the success of the film, cast, and director! I absolutely LOVED this film...from the incredible acting ensemble, cinematography, special effects, and easier plot to follow (since I did not read the books). The pace was better than the first one, too.

Dune 2 was great!... And like you said, the studios should learn from this and adapt. But for myself, being in a creative work-line as well, I have lost faith in the current state of these companies...They will never be able to adapt when you have committees making executive creative decisions... It takes only a Denis V. or a Christopher N. to make them understand that a you can't have too many cooks in the kitchen... But, I doubt that they will trust other directors with this kind of responsibility, so they will resort to the same tropes of making a "creative melange" , that has no direction or vision. We can at least hope though. Nice video!
@GabrielCarusetta

@sowhatisuppeople we saw it in 70mm IMAX, OmnIMAX (st louis is fortunate to have that super rare format), and Dolby Cinema, for 3 of the 6, not to brag lol but what's bullshit is how within 3 weeks of release, st louis had no more screenings in premium formats, just 2.39:1 digital, but even that was good in my small hometown theater, however our viewings at the 4D and "Superscreen" theaters were terrible, I feel sorry for the people there with us who didn't get to see it properly.

Yeah probably not. It’s unlikely to make near as much money a successful marvel or Star Wars movie which is the main thing the studios want.

Other problem is this is an adaption of one of the greatest novels of all time. It’s not like the best screenwriters in Hollywood want to work on sci-fi, fantasy and comic book films. I wish though.

Every comment about originality falls short because all of his hollywood movies are based on previous works, no one is entirely original. Every comment about rejecting or being better than "franchise" movies is silly because Dune is one of of the biggest, most influential and longest running franchises in science fiction. I think you have talent and there is a point on this video but sorry, your script is poorly written.
@GabrielCarusetta
@GabrielCarusetta 3 ай бұрын
Appreciate the note! Yeah it’s a good point that Dune has been a franchise for a while, so it’s not necessary original, but I think it’s unique in the way it was put together

Your point about how a lot of the 2024 slate is dominated by sequels and adaptations makes it out to be a bad thing, while conveniently ignoring that Dune 2 is a sequel and an adaptation as well! Sure, you try to separate Dune from the pack by saying these other movies feel like they were produced by committee. Have you seen any of these other movies yet? Your point rings hollow because your criticism isn't backed by examples. I'm not even disagreeing with you, but crapping on movies you haven't seen yet based on ??? is poor form.
