@Revenge Class good. Lynches dune will always have a place in my heart but not because it was good, but because it was the best effort (before Denis dune) to put dune on the big screen. It's just a terrible movie and I can accept that. Denis dune is spectacular on the other hand. Just jaw dropping. Can't wait for part 2.

@Revenge Class I think the anger might tell you that you are over reacting a little bit. In film there re always sacrifices to be made because film is an inferior method of telling a story. Narrative will always convey the most detail. All films are shallow in comparison, they are short and simple. The death of Yueh would be seconds on a film, no matter who deals the blow, yet in a book they can go deeply into motive, method, emotion of victim and perpetrator.

@Revenge Class Oh yeah...the 84 Dune where Paul makes it rain at the end......LOL! Or changing the weirding way into an auditory weapon. Zero rapport between Paul and his parents. Louis Vuitton interiors in the ornithopters and they look terrible. Harkonnens in hazmat suits. A vampiric Baron with pustules and some of the most cringe worthy dialogue and writing. Terrible as always Sean Young as Chani. And let's not forget the laughable inner monologues. It's an incoherent film. Lynch is one of my fave directors but I'll take his cue of not wanting his name associated with this disaster as he himself considering it a huge failure.

I absolutely love the book and this movie was everything I wanted in an adaptation. Great review Dan, you've hit on so many aspects that should be appreciated by the audience with this one. I'm a big Dune fan and I absolutely *loved* it. There were only two choices during the movie that were noticeably different from the book, but they both make sense in the context. @Siddharth Sriram the books are what makes Dune a masterpiece. the films try to adapt it but it is not something that can really be done. Maybe a long and big production TV series will be the closest thing to bring it to life. but still, much of the complexity and intrigue in the books are inner monologue. Villeneuve's Dune was beautifully made though and was as faithful as possible to the books given only 2.5 hours.

@Siddharth Sriram its all explained more in the books but basically: there are no prophecies so much, as seeds of religion and prophecy implanted among primitive cultures by the sisterhood in order to steer them in certain directions, as well as secure safety in case of situations like Paul and Jessica's where they may end up needing sanctuary. Essentially the Dune universe is Godless, as far as we know it. But there is religion and fanaticism. The sisterhood believe that there will be a coming superhuman but that is from their genetic manipulation through thousands of years of breeding, not because of prophecy. The blue eyes are from the saturation of spice use. the spice is the most powerful substance in the universe. it can give 300 year lifespan, promote health and vitality and expanded awareness. but once you are addicted the body will die if it is removed. So it is obviously a highly potent geriatric substance. and the fremen are living in it. its in the air they breath, the food they eat. The heavy addiction to it gives them the blue within blue eyes, where even the outer whites of the eye becomes blue. why exactly this happens i am not sure. but it is a substance that is discovered 20,000 years into the future from now so anything is possible. it is science fiction after all.

I fully concur with the review, this was an awe-inspiring film, to be seen on the biggest screen possible. And please, please, please people go watch it first because it is an 'only at the movies' experience and certainly one of the best movies of the year, but also because it needs to succeed for us to get the second part and not letting Villeneuve finish the story would be a crime.

Uh, Alita was already a stand-alone animated movie. The live-action was an extremely faithful and more fleshed-out adaptation of that preexisting film. Any continuation would have been based on the longer manga series. My parents, who knew nothing of the anime/manga, loved the film, so to say it “existed only as set-up” seems unfair. We, as a family, are disappointed that Alita did not do well enough to continue, but the lack of a sequel didn't affect our enjoyment of the film we got However, Dune is only Part One of a story. Not getting the sequel would be more than disappointing--it’d be devastating. I’ve already seen many reviewers say that their opinions of Part One hinge on Part Two. I’m hoping that Dune gets the sequel it desperately deserves. Honestly, the fact that both parts weren’t filmed and greenlit together is... baffling.

The movie was definitely made for people who have read the book. So aside from a few complaints, I really enjoyed it. I do wonder how much non-book readers understood some of the lore, like mentats, Suk doctor training, the Landsraad, Spacing Guild, Bene Gesserit, Missionaria Protectiva, the weirding way, the spice, etc. In fact, there a few things that weren't even mentioned at all in the movie, like the Butlerian Jihad, the Holtzman Effect, and the interaction between shields and lasgun so I wonder how much non-book readers got out of the movie without that context. I'm assuming they're saving a lot of exposition for the sequel. But I wonder if there are some thing they'll expand on at all, like the OCB, Zensunni and how religions in Dune are sort of a mix of different religions of today.
@Sayntavian
@Sayntavian 2 жыл бұрын
I would say the opposite. People who've read the book will miss a lot of the intrigue from the first half of the story. It's a far more streamlined version of the story but I feel like there could've been a bit more runtime devoted to illustrating the plot and the personal conflicts and motivations between the Atreides characters. Yeah I agree non-readers won't know about the various lore items, but the film is structured so that they don't need to fully know it to understand the story.

I can only speak as someone who is very familiar with the first three books. I don't think I've ever seen Lynch's film all the way through and I suffered through even the sci-fi adaption even though I did finish it and didn't absolutely hate that. I think they managed to nail the best of both worlds. I think they gave enough exposition if someone was completely cold goin in, but paid attention they'll get the jest, plus didn't needlessly spend 30-40 minutes going over stuff the majority of people watching this movie will already know.

Thanks for such a thoughtful look at this wonderful movie event. I can't agree more with Dan on everyone go to see this in a theater ... I've done both because I want to support the project, see it on the big screen and then watch it over and over from my own home!!! Cheers!!

First thing I said when I came out of the theater last night was, "that was Fellowship of the Ring." What an epic adventure, really hope they keep the story going.

Not even close. Do not compare this to The Fellowship of the Ring. Not even on the same tier. The Lord of the Rings actually has compelling characters.
@DA-nk6gx

@@starpower8093 To me the characters in Dune are compelling and interesting I'm just not emotionally attached to them in a point by point drama basis that character driven works rely upon. Dune, the book and this film, isn't about the readers or viewers being emotionally connected to the characters. Really the book wasn't written for emotional attachment to characters but rather how those characters actions and motivations shape their imperium, and what that means for the stories overall messaging. The movie seemed to follow suit while showing how these characters were emotionally attached to each other. Like the book when it was released this movie took risks and didn't follow normal industry expectations.

One of my only gripes is that some of the dialogue ironically suffered from "Nolan" syndrome due to being spoken in rushed, hushed or harried tones with background noise that was too overwhelming. When so much of the language is also so foreign, it didn't help fully understanding all the detail that was evidently there.

Three of us saw Dune on Friday morning in the theater, and three more of us watched it for first viewing at my house on HBO Max. I have great sound and a pretty good TV (Sony Bravia XBR-75X850D): 75” UHD HDR. I’m still getting a judder problem. I only noticed it once during the opening desert panning shots. Counter quality though: our theater had a problem getting set up. The first few minutes ran without sound, but they did restart the movie. Also, I could see more to the edges on the home presentation. I only noticed it during one scene. Overall, I’m happy I got to see Dune in the theater. I love that book. I love the 1984 movie. I’m glad someone of my childhood too-adult-for-me entertainment is getting good modern adaptations: Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune 2021 are all top notch!

I hate the criticism i have been seeing that this movie only exists to set up the second movie. What?? That was literally the first half of the book on screen. What do yall mean?? It is 'unapologetically a part one' - as it should be.

I went in as a fan of the books, and really enjoyed the movie. I didn't feel the runtime, but I actually think it could have benefited from a bit more exposition to explain some of the motivations of the characters. I feel like there's probably a director's cut out there, and I want to see it.

I can't wholly agree on the score. I certainly thought it was overwhelming in places - now this could just be the sound system in the Imax theater I saw it at, but during 'The Box' scene when Jessica is outside reciting the 'litany of fear', I could barely make out a single word because of the score, which is unfortunate since what she's saying in that moment is absolutely crucial to fully understanding the mental battle going on between Paul and the Reverend Mother. Still, small gripes aside, a wonderful half of a movie, seriously hope Part 2 gets greenlit, it's mind boggling that it wasn't to being with.

After rewatching that scene, Rebecca does a hurried whisper in her accent, I don’t think it’s a mixing issue. It is difficult to make out the words, I somewhat like it though. Not everything has to be perfect and presented. Makes it feel a bit more real, but maybe it’s because I knew the litany already.

The closed circle you are talking about Dan is Paul search for the fremen. The whole arc you need to look is Paul leading the fremen against the Imperial House of Corrino.

I think the "inner conflict and resolution of the movie" is Paul's transition from boy to man with his first kill and embracing his "role" as the messiah knowing where that path leads.

After watching this movie, I realize more than ever that Dune needed to be a tv show or at least a limited series. If I didn’t know the Dune lore, I would have about 100 questions that the movie doesn’t answer because time constraints make it impossible to do so.

While I stayed away from trailers and reviews, I have seen the older films and read through two of the books. Sadly I watched Dune at home (the IMAX version must be breathtaking), but completely enjoyed it. While I knew that they would not (and should not ) make it through the entire book in one movie, the ending was a little abrupt. I consider that a minor complaint. Denis Villeneuve truly honored the themes that Frank Herbert set up in Dune.
