About the green stuff - well spotted. This looks like the greenery on the map in the original Dune game by Cryo. In that game you also play an alternate timeline and you have an option to invest in planetology and start terraforming the planet. Doing so destroys the spice which makes the Harkonnen abandon their bases IIRC. So I have a feeling the planetology might have a strategic, as well as a cosmetic impact.
