@@dunbass7149 a fantasy series with hardly any magic or fantasy elements in the first season. the first season can be argued to be the best if not one of the best seasons of the show. the only magic or fantasy in the first season was the opening scene with White Walkers and the ending scene with dragons being born, both of these take up maybe ~20 minutes of airtime at most. so that means the first season was ~10 hours of television with only ~20 minutes of magic or "fantasy" and it was arguably the best season or one of the best. so a fantasy series was able to keep audiences engaged with very little fantasy or magic and be compelling and high quality without relying on magic or fantasy. name another series that could do that. Harry Potter without magic would be nothing. Star Wars without the force or fictional space travel would be nothing. Lord of the Rings without orcs, elves, and magic would be nothing

My entire workplace talked about GOT on a Tuesday morning - as an Aussie we watched it Monday nights and it was such a cultural phenomenon that you had to watch it straight away or you would be spoiled by those conversations. In America there were a few shows that were as celebrated as Game of Thrones. "The Sopranos" & "Lost" were the last 2 shows that were at its level where Sopranos was at or above it and Lost was close but GOT was bigger. It was like you said, a show you had to watch the episode premieres because you knew all the coworkers and classmates would be talking about it. I don't think we will ever get a show as popular as Game of Thrones ever again because the current trend of streaming services will fracture viewership creating a brick wall to anyone outside the service.

Maybe Breaking Bad? The Walking Dead could be added to the list but that shows popularity and quality went down fast.

@@Confy__ You'd have to go further back in time to find shows that had universal popularity like the Sopranos did. My parents era had shows like M.A.S.H. , All in the Family & the Wonder Years that were as popular as Sopranos for their era. But that's way back in the day. Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul had the quality to become as popular as the Sopranos. And they were competing with Game of Thrones at the time, where if you could only watch one show then Game of Thrones was the better show to watch. The show The Wire had a similar problem where it was well written but it was competing with the Sopranos. But the existence of TiVo where you could record shows on the VCR made it so people didn't stay up to watch the premieres, they would watch them more at their personal leisure. Which played a part in why shows won't ever surpass the Sopranos. And then there was Narcos which started out strong despite being a Netflix show and died out pretty quickly. I think we will see a lot of shows play out like in the future because streaming limits a shows exposure to the masses.

@@SeemsLogical I agree. I was going to mention MASH and The Wire, but as much as I love those shows, I don’t know if they’re on the same level in terms of how popular they were. They were popular for their time but I don’t think they reached anywhere near the amount of people GOT/Sopranos did. I guess when it comes to MASH it could’ve been even more of a cultural impact if it came out when more people had TVs. Not saying people in the 70s didn’t have TVs but more people have them now than they did in the 70s, they also didn’t have all the modern luxuries we have today like streaming etc. The Wire is some of the best written television but I feel like it didn’t reach the same levels as Sopranos, GOT, etc. It really is a shame we rarely get good shows like the ones we both mentioned anymore.

read the books, you have missed alot. if not those then listen to audio books, anyone on youtube because orignal kinda sucks. book 4 and 5 have insane plots that are not even touched by the show but they were hinted in the show since season 1 so you will enjoy those. season 1 is like 95% accurate to book 1, season 2 like 70% accurate, season 3 and 4 like 60% accurate to book 3. season 5 is like 2% accurate to books. there are alot of memorable characters and story arcs that happens in books which are not included in the show ALSO read dunk and egg, its like 3 short stories which some people consider to be better than the main books. a show on the first story is coming out next year, idk how good they will adapt it (after watching hotd i dont have much hope) so imo just read the books after that to become a true asoiaf nerd, watch alt shift x and other thoery channel videos to realise how crazy grrm really is and how much you missed when you read the books

2013-2014 was such a great year for tv. Game of Thrones and Walking Dead were arguably in their peak, Breaking Bad and The Office were in their final seasons, television was just something everyone could watch, enjoy, and discuss. I had awesome conversations with people I never even spoke to once and then never spoke to again. People so unlikely to talk to each other were able to talk and enjoy each others company. It really brought people together

This show was my life. It’s wild how it went from a cultural phenomenon to just radio silence after the finale. I still feel a sort of grief about it to this day. like a family member that passed years ago and you come across a picture of them and you’re reminded of the time you had with them. That may seem pathetic to some people but I loved that show. I loved theorizing, I loved the hot takes and discussions with people. I agree that a proper remake in the future would feel wrong without the original actors and the cynic in me says there will never be another piece of media like it. I hope I’m wrong but between GoT, mass effect, and Star Wars, Some of my favorite fictional stories have just kinda died to me.

I think you're right that there will never be another piece of media like GOT, because that was very likely the last "event watching" experience we'll have as a culture. The media environment is so fractured these days, it's simply not possible to have something like that happen again. GOT hit cultural "must watch" status even as the industry was crossing into an environment where that would no longer be something that was possible. Your comparison to Mass Effect.... OOF. I was a big "indoctrination theory" guy after ME3. Looking back, the grief and disbelief I felt after ME3 was the so-much-less-impactful precursor to the same feelings I had and have about GOT.

The problem with adapting a song of ice and fire is that most of the plots just can’t be removed. Look at Jayne Poole. Because they removed her plot the show runners had to force Sansa into winterfell. This destroyed Sansa’s plot in the vale, which ruined it’s importance, and stops littlefinger’s plot line (it’s a popular theory that Sansa is going to kill little finger in TWoW). Now Jon has no reason to break his vows - he does care about Sansa but Arya is his favorite sibling and even then he only breaks his vows after receiving a letter that says Stannis failed (which is probably not truthful). All these plot lines are riveting and engaging, torn apart by in service to a self imposed episode limit. All because the show runners wanted to simplify the story. And some people only see the problems with season 8.

this is true but the show went off the rails when they got to the point where the books add half a dozen new major characters and plotlines that are just left hanging. it's obvious fAegon and Dorne were supposed to be a huge thing but it was unclear how these stories were going to be resolved (still unclear a decade later). I think that maybe if they stayed closer to the source material S5 wouldn't have been so bad... but the show would still suck once they ran out of books to adapt. D&D were exceptional showrunners at first but the heart and soul of the story were always Martin's. If he can't give it a proper ending than nobody can. Still, I kinda expected it to meander like in S5&6, the dumpster fire of S7&8 is a mystery. The "butterfly effect" is one thing but putting those words about innocents into Jaime's mouth is something else.

Yeah, Game of thrones was the last show that everybody watched. Not long after it ended there was a shift in the way people consumed movies and tv-shows. Streaming services divided people each on their own shows in their own time. There were no way of knowing what your coworkers were watching previous night, so there weren't (and aren't) any water cooler talk like there was with the Game of thrones. In addition of the change in the way people consume media, the media itself changed also. Most of what Hollywood produces nowadays is of poor quality, similar of what the 8th season of GoT provided, and crappy shows has snowball's chance in hell to become widely loved sensations. So it is likely that we will not get hit shows any time soon, probably not in a decade at least.

@@justingold9240 Tbf, the one critique you can levy against FMA: Brotherhood is that many aspects that were already done in 2003 sometimes felt a bit rushed in Brotherhood. Without spoiling anything: The whole plot around Nina is a good example. In 2003, the plot is spread over two episodes, while in Brotherhood it's done in just one. So, imo it's best to watch 2003 first to fully appreciate Brotherhood, which is probably also what the creators of Brotherhood thought anyone would have done, maybe also partly knowing they couldn't do it better than 2003, anyway, too. But many people today get told 2003 isn't worth their time and that Brotherhood is _the_ definitive version and now that it's almost impossible to watch FMA 2003 anywhere (legally), anyway, (I had to buy a used DVD set to be able to watch it again), I think some people new to the series need a while to get into it. I prefer Brotherhood overall, too, but I'm glad I also watched 2003 first and also like some of the decisions made later in 2003, too. Lowart has a good series comparing the two versions, imo. What this has to do with GoT? Well, I hope GoT doesn't get the _exact_ same treatment as Brotherhood in that the new series rushes the stuff the original series already covered very well (so say up to S4) because "everybody has seen the OG GoT anyway" and then later the latter becomes more and more unavailable, while the new one becomes the de-facto standard and people have to live with the worse version of the first few seasons. It wasn't _as_ bad with FMA because the time up until the changes was much shorter, for GoT I think it would be much worse.

The thing that baffles me the most about GOT is that streamers didn’t try to release more of their flagship shows weekly or at least in small batches per week. It helps them because then you would retain more of the people who just watch a show then cancel. And the cultural zeitgeist and enjoyment of the show is obviously so much better for many viewers. Imagine if Arcane was released weekly or 3 eps per week.

I miss it a lot too! The first season of House of the Dragon actually quenched some of my longing for the universe, but the second season was disappointing in many ways. So I finally decided to start reading the books, in a very casual way, on my Kindle. And it's been great. Some days I read a chapter or two and then I'm on page 500! Anyway, it's an excellent universe and I hope the books have a better conclusion.

The books are amazing! Make sure to read fire and blood and the knight of the Seven kingdoms, which is my favorite. Season 2 of HOTD was disappointing, hopefully with the writers strike done and hbo hopefully under new management soon it will be better (really hope nettles shows up to the vale with rheana in the beginning of season 3 and says "wtf you doing with my dragon")

I think you nailed exactly what I miss about it. Looking past the unbelievable writing and acting of the first few seasons, it was a cultural phenomenon is a way few things are. I would talk to my fellow nerdy friends who also read the books about it Sunday night, but then Monday morning my regular work friends would want to chat about it, then Tuesday at the gym my basketball buddies would be talking about it. The sense of community and the amount of discourse that was generated was special, it hooked everyone. Who knows if we’ll see it again ok that level. Just grateful to have been a part of it.

I managed to avoid all spoilers for years and just finished the show for the first time this last winter. I think not watching it live, while it certainly meant i missed out on the "moment," meant i wasn't AS let down by the end, for which i am grateful, though i was still frequently frustrated. Yeah, although Kit did sign on to do the Jon Snow show (which has since been canned, seems like they couldn't find a good angle, which, like, yeah, there is not much left there), so it almost seems like what he needed more than anything was a break. I wonder if the show had branched out more in the way that the books do, whether or not they would have felt as exhausted by the end. As the story in the show is so simplified, a lot more screentime and narrative weight is dedicated to Jon and Dany, but in a version of the show with Quentyn Martell and Victarion Greyjoy and Young Gryff, the narrative responsibility wouldn't have rested on them so heavily, presumably leading to less demanding shoots and more time to exist outside of Thrones. It obviously is still a huge chunk of their life to be a part of a project, but yeah I will always be curious if a less demanding schedule would have had them feeling less burnt out.

While I understand and empathize with the idea that Weiss and Benioff wanted to do other things, I also believe that there are very few pieces of art that truly capture the zeitgeist the way GoT did. It wasn't just a show, it was conversations at the water cooler on Monday morning, it was talking to your parents and grandparents who usually don't watch anything like GoT about what you think will happen next week, it was arguing with your neighbor about who is the coolest character. Everyone watched GoT, it drew the eyes of the world for a period of time. And when you have created a piece of art like that, I think you owe it to the world to give it your all and follow it through to completion. Quitting on GoT the way they did was like if Leonardo da Vinci got a little over half way through painting the Mona Lisa and then thought "man I'm tired of this, I'm going to go paint fruit bowls instead".

I'm sure the action, battles and creatures would look great animated but so much of the show is people standing around in rooms and talking that I don't think it would play to animation's strengths. You'd miss out on all the live actors' performances. Assuming the books are ever finished in some form they may just be unadaptable. As someone who hasn't read the books I'd rank the seasons as follows: Seasons 1-4: Perfect Seasons 5 & 6: Still great (especially 6) Season 7: Okay-ish Season 8: Terrible I really miss GoT as well... I can't comprehend how HBO let this show die. Of course, we blame Benioff and D.B. Weiss but I think we are missing the bigger point here. Why not hire new writers? If HBO, Martin and crew of Game Of Thrones really saw that Game Of Thrones needs at least 10 seasons and cannot end on Season 8, why let Dumb and Dumber finish it in the first place? Do they have full rights to the show? I doubt it. If so, organize a strike for them. Do whatever it takes, but don’t end the most popular show in the world, where it's obvious that people will be outraged. People would definitely support HBO in this matter when it comes to renewing the show for at least 10 more seasons. It's strange that HBO didn’t do enough to prevent that stupid 8th season from happening and the show just ended. Game of Thrones changed how I watch TV and even movies. I don’t think I will ever again be able to enjoy all the decent quality content that is coming out. Prime GoT set the standard too high. I think another factor that hampered the showrunners was the need to prevent leaks, to keep the storylines secret. This wasn't a problem in the earlier seasons because the books were there to be read. But with no books, and such massive interest, the pressure must have been immense. They could have done with help from other writers. Instead they took on most of the writing themselves so that a minimal number of people were involved. It would have been no use involving GRRM as it's clear that he can't finish it either.

The beauty of things lies in their finite. So with Game of Thrones you will never feel that pleasure of watching it for the first time not cause “it” ended, but because you ended it (thats also why House of Dragons feels like a second rendering of the show, even tho is a new one, it wont give you the same “new” feeling of a otherworldly realm and a the same too much “like our world” feeling of a realm). And in its finite aspect lies the beauty and grandeur of Martins world. I love that I had the chance to see it and to read the books, cause such creations come once in a while and you just hope this next “while” will come as soon possible. P.S. It has been 13 years since A Dance With Dragons was published, and GRRM still hasn't finished the next book (with one more remaining). Game of Thrones ended years ago, and the prequel series just ended its second season (which aired 2 years after its first). D&D condensed Feast + Dance into a single season (which also included things yet to come, like Shireen), then made multiple seasons without any books to adapt. If they had adapted everything inside Feast + Dance (even though they'd been condensing well before then, though to a lesser extent), they would still exhaust the book material before GRRM could publish more, and have the same problem of an unfinishable story that he currently has.

There's just so much to keep track of, so unless you're paying a lot of attention or you're really good at figuring stuff out as it goes it's really easy to get lost. I think Mistborn is probably a better starting point, Warbreaker is also a fun standalone that's available for free if you want to try that. Neither of those has the same epic scope as A Song of Ice and Fire or the Stormlight archive though, so if you want that I think just physically reading The Way of Kings (ebook is totally fine of course) might be better.

Another option, if you want a quicker way to get used to his style on a macro level, is to read Legion or the Reckoners trilogy. They’re not fantasy, but they do show how good he is at setting up pieces for a big finish. Mistborn is such a good example of this, and stormlight takes it to new levels, but yeah I took forever to get through those at first, and now stormlight’s my favorite series (as well as Kingkiller). Just had to get used to it

GoT is such a tragedy. First 4 seasons were a blast, they became a phenomenon, everyone everywhere loved and talked about GoT. And then writers got tired of it and wanted to finish it asap, leading to a pathetic downfall. And Martin found himself in a world where everyone saw what will happen in his story before he even published it fully, he saw how love for GoT fell, and now if he wants to continue writing his books he will forever live in the shadow of the show. It won't be: "what did the showmakers change from the books", it will be: "what did the books change from the show", and I kinda see why he doesn't want to finish them. There are no winners. DnD got their reputation destroyed, Martin doesn't really want to finish the books and suffers from being known as a lazy writer, fans got a shitty show, book readers won't get to read the story till it's end. I guess the only ones who won in all this are HBO higher ups, who got a ton of money from GoT, and continue to milk it with House of Dragon. Everyone are unhappy except for capitalists, ain't that the story of our world, eh.

GRRM was slowing down well before the show. What the show changed for him is it made him rich enough that he never has to publish anything more, and his publishers can't force him to release a book like A Feast for Crows with half the POVs missing, or like A Dance With Dragons with its concluding battles missing. D&D are 100% winners. They won Emmys for the show, there was a huge bidding war over them, and they got a follow-up gig making 3 Body Problem (which got another Emmy nomination for Best Drama). People griping about them on, say, the freefolk subreddit, has 0 impact on them.

It's at the top of the list of many peoples all time favorites yet it's not finished. If the ending fizzles and disappoints like the TV shows then his life's work will have been a flop in the end it's stressful and that stressful environment is not conducive to creativity in fact is stifles it. I can understand why he hasn't written it but my interest in the series has vanished and I fully expect him to not have it in him to finish anymore. He's too comfortable living around it and doesn't want to experience the deep dive pain that finishing the books would be. I can understand it but alas I no longer care and the longer it takes the more likely it will be a flop and so it's a double edged sword. I expect he will never finish it and we'll get a cauterized ending like Wheel of Time written by another author. Sanderson did his best and his ending wasn't bad but it just wasn't the same as what Robert Jordan had written and it's a damn shame.

21:00 This is exactly how I feel--even if they rebooted GoT, it just wouldn't be the same. So much of the cast was absolutely perfect. Like you said, how the hell would you cast a better Ned or Tyrion. Charles Dance was so freaking amazing as Tywin. Maybe some of the cast wasn't absolutely perfect, but so many casting choices were, and if they rebooted it I really doubt they could find the same level of talent for each character. D&D were given such a lucky hand and they absolutely f*cked it up....

I don’t care what anyone says about how it ended, the show was 80 percent perfect in my eyes. The characters are some of my all time favorite in fiction, the world building was beautiful and the cinematography was gorgeous, I even have a soft spot for seasons 6-8 because there are moments that I still remember and love to this day such as the Battle of the Bastards, Jamie charging Dany, and numerous character interactions. It’s a show that’s one of a kind, and I’ll cherish it always.

Let me say: you did not waste my time, but reminded me that I was so busy at the time I wasn't able to watch and follow the series, although I read the 3 first books. I got pretty sad on it going downhill and never concluding because I was "waiting it to be complete" to get to it. Now I know that it is much more enjoyable to just watch unfinished and tag along, instead of binge watch it all whole, being good or bad, complete or not.
