The Seaworms created by Waff quickly thrived on the planet Buzzell and growing large and strong, these extremely vicious and territorial creatures eventually dominate the planet's ecosystem killing many Cholisters and wreaking havoc on the soostone harvesting process by attacking the Phibians, the genetically modified race of humanoid fish creatures responsible for the harvesting of soostones. Finally, a worm is captured and harvested from the sea, inside its body lies an organ which produces what is known as UltraSpice a concentrated version of Melange.

that's what we say now, but this was written in the early 2000s and maybe is based on notes from the 80s. ultra didn't have the same boring connotation back then. same with cloning, while it was an interesting concept bak then, nowadays cloning is mostly annoying

Ah. The writing axiom known as the Mountain Dew paradox. What’s more intense than ultra? Extreme. But what’s more righteous than extreme? You guessed it, ultra. Therefore we live in a simulation which is the dream of an AI overlord named Omnius, like out of a 5 year olds imagination.

Frank Herbert was less concerned with Sci-Fi and more concerned with Humanity. A fact that is lost on newcomers to Dune. Most have been conditioned to expect great feats of technology as a major aspect of Sci-Fi. New readers become lost with the philosophy, history, anthropology, theology, psychology, politics, meta-physics, and sociology. Those who don't understand Dune believe it is more suited to Fantasy. Most importantly, they don't understand the underlying hatred towards technology that they fear will strip humanity of its ability to think and reason for itself. Most people who watch Sci-Fi love technology and are enamored by it. They want their lives to be ruled by it. Dune is the Anti-Sci-Fi that exposes human nature for what it is. It denies both man and technology as a savior, and that scares people. It doesn't fit with most readers world view. When other authors and Brian Herbert attempt to bring Thinking Machines into the Dune universe, it changes the entire dynamic. Frank Herbert kept the Thinking Machines out of Dune for a reason. Brian Herbert's use of them is an attempt to bring more mainstream readers into the fold. It's something Frank Herbert was never concerned with and diminishes humanity's role in Dune. The war with The Thinking Machines is less important than the events leading up to it and after it. The psyche of the Dune Universe is set in stone with the Butlerian Jihad. To not express the past or the future of humanity with that perspective is to not understand Humanity in Dune or humanity in general. Dune is not about The Machines, it never was. Human nature can only be expressed by humanity and how it attempts to deal with humanity.

ObiTrev One remark: The hallmark of good science fiction is ruminating and questioning humanity. Good science fiction is so anthropic it should force you to ask the question; not pose it for you. Herbert succeeds here.

From the way Herbert built his universes, I always thought that he might have had some additional intentions with the sandworms - there might be more to them than we know. For example, if their metabolism produces chemicals that allow to see beyond space and time and if they are also bothered by the Holtzmann effect, which again, bends the space and time, what if they are pan-dimensional creatures of some sort? What if they "know" something, or what if there is an intentional purpose to them? Am I way too out of line, or is it a thing Frank Herbert’s imagination would do?
@paulelephant9521
@paulelephant9521 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah surely there has to be something weird about the sandworm, why on earth haven't samples been transferred from Arrakis to other planets? or different versions genetically engineered? Spice is so damn precious powerful and generally REALLY important it just seems mad that it's produced on only one planet, surely the Harkonnens or the Emperor wouldn't mind creating a desert planet and having their own personal source of Spice? So there must be something special about sandworms that makes them impossible to transfer through space by Navigators from the Guild and being some sort of pan-dimensional hyperbeing fits the bill nicely!

@pyronixcore
@pyronixcore 5 жыл бұрын
No, the Thinking Machines were not wiped out. They were pushed out. After the Butlerian Jihad, mentioned in DUNE, there were laws enacted so that no machine intelligence could ever rise to power again. Paul saw in his prescience the terrible truth that the machines would one day return and to ensure humanities' survival, certain things HAD to happen. Many horrible and cruel. He couldn't do it. So Leto had to, and he did. He made sure that in the forever escalating attempts to free themselves from his imposed stagnation (socially, genetically, economically, technologically, etc) that people and technologies would eventually be made to overcome his powers of prescience and be truly hidden from oracular view. Allowing the human race to survive whatever terrible atrocities awaited at the end of the Golden Path. The Returning was the beginning of the Thinking Machines returning to human space, where humans who left during the great Scattering came home to the Imperium (by chance) while fleeing the savage destruction and total annihilation of their once-prospering worlds.

FYI: (Spoiler Alert to those who have not read Hunters of Dune): In the Expanded Dune Universe, it is revealed that the Honored Matres are originated by the liberated female Tleilaxu on some off-shoot Tleilaxu world. Their liberators were the renegade Bene Gesserit and Fisher Speakers who took part in the Scattering. Once the rescued female Tleilaxu found out what happened to them, they took part in the Bene Gesserit / Fish Speaker training. Many years later, their descendants would return and rage havoc on the Bene Tleilaxu worlds as shown in Heretics and Chapterhouse Dune.

Was doing okay, thought “cool, sand worms bred to overcome their only weakness” then the part where two Pauls fight each other then one fucking dies after consuming ultra spice. Thats just ridiculous. First, the idea of the universe evolving to the point where gholas of Paul existing just isn’t that big of a deal seriously insults the severity of everything Paul did, I know gholas are a thing but Paul... he needs to stay dead. Also, I feel like Leto could’ve used his prescience to search for how to breed sand worms to be immune to water then he’d find a way to swap bodies, but I guess not. That’s the problem with expanded, it creates holes where it’s like “why didn’t people look into the future for that solution”

You should try to understand Frank better, instead of showing so much irrational hatred. If you really were an "orthodox Herbertarian", you would know that Herbert would never approve the orthodox Herbertarians. He would ignore those fanatics who consider his book series as a canon. Especially because he wanted Dune to be finished. I can not stand those fans who hate the expanded Dune and feel proud of themselves. I'm keen on the Duneverse and that's all, not mad about the expanded Dune. I enjoyed it sometimes, but also I was disappointed in some ways. And I'm also vehement when I'm disappointed or angry, but I always try to explain my reasons and make sense of them. Anyway, I think that if you want to talk about something, you have to know it well enough. And a lot of people have not even read it.

In the Dune Encyclopedia, it's mentioned in the section on Arrakis that millions of years ago the planet was covered with water and that life on the planet was adapted to it. It's then mentioned that with enough time (a few million more years) the sandworms could evolve to the point where water wasn't poisonous to them. What if Paul (as emperor) sped up this process by having the worms genetically modified to adapt to water, and so the terraforming of Arrakis wouldn't have killed them off?

This hasn´t anything to do with nostalgia. I´ve read the saga from 2016 (twice my fav parts, the original and Chapterhouse), so It´s like I´m pretty new in the fandom, but to any decent reader the works of KJA and BH are ludicrous and poorly executed, when not just ridiculous cliché. Frank´s work is thought provoking and on the league of some other great masters as Stanislaw Lem or Arthur Clarke, is sad that his own son ruins his legacy by writing stuff more suitable to Star Wars "novels" and even ruining characters. More development doesn´t mean good development. if the writing and the ideas don´t work, thousand of pages of backstory are just a bigger turd.

Comparing Dune and Star Wars is ludicrous, SW is a franchise made for selling toys, not a huge work of narrative art. These fandoms should be different in that way, but the expanded shit brings us this soft-geeky view on Dune that is pretty harmful to the legacy of the true books.

Haven't read the expanded Dune universe books but aren't the "thinking machines" mentioned in this video the "great enemy" that Leto II foresaw out in unknown space? I know Frank Herbert never said that himself but is that what happened in the expanded books or do I have that wrong? I just remember hearing that the great enemy was an out of control AI and also remember hearing a lot of complaints about how it wasn't a good idea and wasn't executed well either

I haven't read EXDune yet, just finished Chapterhouse, but from all I heard, yeah, the enemy is robots which is really disappointing as OriginalDune never made me think of Terminatorlike mashines to be the enemy. In fact, in Chapterhouse it is stated quite clearly that evolved face dancers ("Those of Many Faces") drove out the Honored Matres back to the Old Empire and not some mashines. I would even have preferred the enemy to be some alien-human-hybrid with connections to the Worms as their origins aren't clear and there are hints of other Dunes pre-Scattering.
@infested4494

The new face-dancers were allied with the thinking machines. The thinking machines created the original machine-version of face dancers with the help of a Tlulaxa scientist.

There were hints in multiple books. The sandworms evolved naturally by themselves, before a human group, the Muadru, which is now extinct found them and moved some to Arrakis. Originally Arrakis was a sea-planet, which the sandtrout (baby worms) transformed into Dune. The only unexplained part is the why.

They said let us tell what we thinking. This is worth the read. It’s not the same but that’s not a bad thing. There’s going to be moments of What!?!!!
