Then again, I'm not sure he needed to bother arguying with the emperor about anything, given that the guy had plotted the destruction of House Atreides with the Harkonens, which, if it became known to the Great Houses, would have him fed to the worms in a heartbeat. Houses waging war against each other, that's okay - the Emperor sending his own death commandos to rid himself of a potencial political threat? That's off-limit.

Hollywood nukes keep being lame. The desert probably can't get much hotter than it already is, but everyone near the sphere-ship should've felt the thermal pulse setting their clothing on fire. And that flash - the little that there even was - was very underwhelming. But then again, Villeneuve's style is all about the "moving painting" aspect, so maybe this was better for the visuals. In that series, promising bloodlines on several planets are nurtured over thousands of years to create the ultimate speciman of each species with unprecedented powers, with the human instance ultimately proving the most successful. The 1st book of the series ("Triplanetary") was especially entertaining because it detailed the roles played by multiple generations of the 2 primary bloodlines on Earth during different eras in human history (the Roman Empire, etc.). An absence of any kind of air surveillance or a low orbit satellite is really puzzling in this universe...
@princeytron14 күн бұрын
It’s actually internally explained that this is Arrakis specifically that does not have proper satellite coverage due to complex political machinations. This is why the plot to throw Paul and Jessica away worked as without proper satellites it’s impossible to properly map the desert areas. Basically the Fremen pay large amounts of Spice directly to the Spacing Guild to keep the orbit of the planet free of satellites. Since the Spacing Guild is a powerful faction and the only ones capable of putting up the satellites, they would have to be the ones to change their minds, which they wont as they get generous Spice access for simply not doing anything.
@atenrok14 күн бұрын
@princeytron that's all great and wonderful, and I totally respect these explanations. However, earlier we saw surveillance drones watching around the harvesters for worms. Saturating the skies with those would not require any satellites. How come the planet leade's palace doesn't have any air support, especially during the emperor's visit... Basically those plot holes are annoying 🤷🏻♂️

A lot of people are talking about how the three missiles are so close to each other, and how only one probably went off as it could've destroyed the other two. Now idk what Dune's reasoning is exactly, but the only thing I can really come up with to justify this sort of style, is how fighter aircraft tend to fire two missiles at a single target. The reason they do this is for redundancy in case one fails in some manner. Applying this logic to this scene, I can reason that there were potential risks of the missiles being intercepted in some manner. If one was intercepted, there's still two. If the second was intercepted, there's still the third and final missile. The goal is to nuke the army and just one is clearly enough, so to be safe, they sent three.

in lore it's explained that various types of atomics can be adjusted to have a yield the user wants, so if Paul wanted a massive planet cracking nuke he could have set it, but didn't want to

Nuclear weapons don't create particularly large amounts of radiation. Although I suspect the heat from the blast would kill a significant part of the Emperor's army at that distance.

Paul said he saw a “narrow way” to victory. Almost like Dr Strange saw millions of variations and only 1 win. Yet Paul easily won just by nukes. He didn’t even need the worms. He could have been even deadlier if he wanted to be cause those 3 weren’t all of them. Could have blown up the Emperor, sadakur, and the Barron, if he wanted. Yet most of his visions they lost???
@redswingline26226 күн бұрын
As I understand it, the nukes won't work if shot directly at the shielded encampment. They had to detonate outside of the barrier to break it. But yeah, the 2nd barrage then hits the emperor's camp directly and it's all over. No fremen die. But then, didn't the whole thing depend on getting the emperor to Arrakis - like, that was the narrow path. His fate was sealed once he landed. The trick was getting him to do just that.
@princeytron14 күн бұрын
It’s because using Atomics on humans directly is a direct violation of the Great Convention, the unified legal code of the Landsraad. Using them on idle terrain is technically allowed. He seeks to become Emperor after this, the Landsraad would never accept an Emperor who directly broke the Great Convention. Also, to gain the throne he has to challenge the Emperor directly, hence the challenge/duel scene we see. So it’s about long term planning. It’s no use capturing the planet through nuclear fire only to have the entire Landsraad descend on you for breaking the Convention.

@spanke299928 күн бұрын
in the lore, the book, using nukes on people is a big nono. everybody would freak out and the whole universe would come down on you. Using nukes to 'cut stone' on the other hand is a gray area. also the ship of the emperor was shielded, so nukes wouldn't do actually harm to himself.
@MrGyulaBacsiАй бұрын
If they wanted to defeat the emperor and the Harkonnens fast and easy why didn't they aim the nukes right at the sphere?
@fieckfieckfieckАй бұрын
Because using atomic weapons on human targets directly is a war crime and Paul wanted them alive
@princeytron14 күн бұрын
Because it breaks the Great Convention. It’s basically the unified legal code, which dictates things like War Crimes. Using atomics on humans is a direct violation against this, but using them on terrain or other animals is *technically* allowed. If he had done such a thing, the Landsraad would heavily come down on him for it, not conducive as he seeks to challenge for the Throne which requires the Landsraad’s cooperation for. Also, he has to confront the Emperor and take his seat of power through a challenge of conquest. Can’t do that if he just poofs into nothing from atomic fire, all that would do is have the Throne pass to his next heir, again, against Paul’s actual goals. The destruction of the mountains is strategic to allow the giant sandstorm inside the basin to obstruct enemy visibility, a strategically sound move.

I wonder if air and satelite reconnaissance is a thing in this universe, such big military force should know that another army is preparing in such close vicinity 🧐 like, nuclear strike capable force is close and ready to attack should be a thing to know about in advance 😇
@ComradeOgilvy19842 ай бұрын
The book makes this more clear: (1) there is a dangerous gathering storm so aerial patrols are grounded and satellites would be of little help; (2) there are no such satellites (the Fremen have bribed the Guild to not deploy any)
