I don't quite remember exactly the outfits that the emperor wore, and I think that was the point. Why would he wear something extremely extravagant and unpractical ? To show his importance ? He is the emperor. He doesn't need an outlandish outfit when he got a platinium plated spaceshit the size of a small moon. He is probably the most powerful individual in the movie, he can wear whatever he wants and what he wants looks like a pajama

Exactly. House Corrino had the throne for 10000 years. Everyone in the gaalxy knows who they are. There is no need to show off.
@federationprime9 ай бұрын
The extravagance in the novels is a symptom of House Corrino's waning power. In past eras the dukes of great houses were awed by the emperor in a t-shirt, now they're miffed when he's wearing a solid block of gold. House Corrino has to appear visibly strong to mask their weakness, gilding rot in an attempt to hold onto their power. If anything, having him wear rather plain clothes in the movie makes him seem stronger.

Also his importance shows in the people surrounding him, in his transportation, in his portable palace, no need to dress extravagantly when you have a planet's worth of wealth following you wherever you go

I disagree with basic comments. The whole point of the basic dress (I think) of the imperial house is to show they have little worry about anything. Sorta the theory that those who have the most wealth tend to not show it off. I think the actual costume of the emperor was his throne room/space ship. That imposing structure. That giant silver orb was the real show piece

Something i love about Florence Pugh's costumes is how they evolve through the movie, she begins with nothing on her head to more and more "restrictive" head wears. In the last scene, she has what are basically prison bars accross her face, as the story brings her to one single role she must take: being paul's bride

My mom used to wear it when we used to go on vacation in the oued nail region in the 80/90's. But nowdays you wont find them in the north part anymore. You have to go to ghardaia. It was manily wore by women in the city. Not in the countryside. And in the desert, women wont cover their head and face. It was only the "blue" men. It was very interesting as a kid as according to the region, they wear very different clothes. Men also used to cover their head. They dont do it anymore in the north, but still in the south to protect from the sun. Some even cover their face. (Sorry for my poor english)

House Corrino’s power comes from their Sardaukar, famed and feared throughout the Imperium. I saw Princess Irulan’s choice of dress as a respectful nod in their direction. She’s acknowledging the martial nature of her powerbase by wearing faux armor to court. She’s the heir after all, it would be in her best interest to maneuver to secure their loyalty through symbolic gestures such as this. I didnt make the nun connection though, makes sense since she’s Bene Gesserit trained.

Spot on analysis of the Harkonnens - they really ramped up the insectoid imagery in part 2, with the soldiers' beetle/beekeeper like armour and visors like compound eyes. All of their craft and vehicles too, the war vessels similar to cocoons or pupae, spice harvesters like mites, or fat buzzing flies like Rabban's ship. I especially loved the referees (??) in the Harkonnen colosseum scene, like a mix of Atlas beetle or Mantis, gimp and court jester. Absolutely captivating design.
@SeanRiddolls9 ай бұрын
The Harkonen armor/envornmental suits worn in the desrt scenes in Dune 2 , seemed bulky and out of place - which I think was the point. The Harkonen were foreigners; invaders, not in sync with the ways of the desert. This was reflected in their bulky black fishbowl design that fully enveloped the head and upper body.

@@mmasque2052 I agree with you, that was my thought as well. He has no reason to show off because he already is the emperor. I did, however, also think that it may have played a part in hinting to his eventual downfall, he is old, plain and forgotten, nothing more than a simple outfit. A man that embodies both the plain, tired, and uninspired while also being in a position to currently do what he wants, with no need to show off with adornments, because he is recognisable in being.

The most interesting Harkonnen costume designs weren't the ones by the main characters in my opinion, with the exception of the Baron and his biomechanical medical support system. The ornithopter gunman with this fly eye-like helmet piece or the weapon's master handing Feyd his dagger before the arena fight, not even to mention those crazy mentat people performing some kind of religious ritual around a planetary control screen. The entire Harkonnen scenery was the stuff of nightmares and a completely amazing set-up for the villains.

Thanks for the great videos, as always. My observations: 1) warm colours are mostly reserved for the fremen, while the metallics, rubber mattresses, sleek velvets and leather are cool-toned 2) i initially was fascinated by irulan's headdress featured on the cover of the video while feeling that every other headdress felt awkward, unfinished or incomplete. Maybe they meant to convey that irulan failed both to become the empress regnant and advance in the ranks of bene gesserit. Little did i know, that my favourite look of the film (apart from lady Jessica's most elaborate veiled reverend mother costume) was almost entirety ripped off from paco rabane's 2020 ***autumn winter collection. What a shame, i really did expect the dune's costumes to be innovative, creative, previously unseen and out of the world (like star wars prequels, lord of the rings) .... And the costume designers just slapped some couture looks together and went for it! The most glaring and infuriating omission is that almost all costumes (except of the fremen) somewhat lack texture. The fabrics, metals and other details look as if they are made specifically to be as smooth as possible, so the end result looks like lovechild of uncanny valley and a statue. Only fremen are dressed creatively and with enormous attention to detail, care for the source material and real-world cultures. The costumes are almost visceral, if one can use that word, in their tactile properties, intricate layers, textures and details. Can't help to be sorely and profoundly disappointed with dune costumes for the second time 😞😢

Heidi hi! Thanks again for your analysis and references. For some reason youtube does not allow me to reply to you on comment I posted last week. I was asking about a ceremonial mask worn by a character during the Water of Life Ritual. I finally found the name of the character: the Watermaster. If you could search for Keith Christensen's Dune Part Two Concept Art you can find visuals of the Watermaster and her mask.
@Costume_CO9 ай бұрын
Thanks Badz, sorry you were having trouble. Okay, let me take a look.
@Costume_CO9 ай бұрын
There is some discussion that the mask is inspired by the ceremonial masks of Luba Peoples of the Congo. images.app.goo.gl/w3uzspHxDBactQJE8 I do see some inspiration for some of the costumes in Dune inspired by the Tajik women's paranja: images.app.goo.gl/N4WpuNaV45UQpjs78 Not sure about this one. It's a bit mummy like.
@Badz_B34chst4r9 ай бұрын
@@Costume_CO I find the mask in the movie a very tasteful interpretation of the traditional design. May be the mummy symbolism is intentional. Movie version of the paranja outfits without the colorful embellishments/trimmings remind me of upright fabric caskets.
@Costume_CO9 ай бұрын
Haha, yes, they totally look like upright caskets.

I didn't like scenery and costume design in Villeneuve's Dune. The 1984 Lynch's version was much more daring and creative. I found it plain boring.

Were the brand Hamcus still involved in Dune part 2 like it was in the first one ? It’s actually the reason why I watched the first one, because of Hamcus

@@Costume_CO Hi, I actually might’ve made a mistake on this… I’m sorry I can’t find anything related 🫣 But it’s a brand that makes post apocalyptic inspired clothes, they released a ss20 collection with some clothes called “Sandworm Hunter” or “Dune Raider”. (Kinda funny that it release a year before the 2021 movie XD) They have a very interesting storytelling, were each collections goes under a fictional post apocalyptic “faction” which are based on a made up planet with environmental challenges, that influences the way they dress. Reminds me a lot how the Fremens dresses. They designs are pretty out of this world, and prices not excessively high, because they have their own manufactory in China (Chinese brand) which allow them to reduce production coasts, and have larger pieces per collection

Hello, in the video you mentioned that berber or Amazigh people its from North America, but this culture its from North Africa. Where I live before the Spanish conquistadors, the berber or Amazigh culture was present in these islands, and nowadays can found many petroglyphs of amazigh o libian scripts, and many types of costumes that are too similar to the continental berebers. Sorry for my bad english, I'm canarian-spanish, from Canary Islands.😊

I think my biggest gripe with the new Dune movies is that yes, there's so much inspiration from cultures not represented in the central cast. But also that the color grading is so dull? Lawrence of Arabia brings out the beauty of desert climates that I think these movies don't convey.

The Emperor and Princess costumes are so underwhelming, that its kinda staggering, considering how well thought out the rest of the costumes were. The Lynch version did that one right, as the miniseries were way too campy imo, but it should be reasonable that the emperor and his daughter should project way more imperial ostentatiousness, at least when not in a private surroundings.
@Costume_CO9 ай бұрын
Hi Alex, totally agree with you on this.
@Alex-mn1fb9 ай бұрын
@@Costume_CO Hey! Loved your takes and the vid. The Corrinos were really underrepresented in Part Two, I kinda feel the hints form the first movie were a buildup that lead up to nothing. That is probably one of my biggest gripes with an otherwise fantastic movie. I truly hope Villeneuve will change his mind and release the extended version with some cut scenes, and I truly believe a lot of their scenes were cut for the theatrical versions, there are several clues for it. There is a cut character close to the imperial family, and there is even an actor who said how sorry he feels that his part was unfortunately cut out completely.

The princess's outfit was ostentatious as fuck. The emperor I agree.
@alissasteele62669 ай бұрын
The Princess and the Emperor reminded me of old medieval royalty. Simple garmets made of quality fabric to indicate the age/faux austerity of House Corrino. Personally I loved the decision to portray the emperor as a sad old man. Such a great and realistic inversion of expectations!
@Alex-mn1fb9 ай бұрын
@@alissasteele6266 I am completely on board with the emperor being portrayed as an older, tired, sad man, its not really a subversion of expectations, in the books he is actually incredibly old, but has been extending his lifespan with spice if I remember correctly. I just think that its just abundantly clear, if a little sad, that the Corrinos got the short end of the stick, not just with the costumes, but storyline as well.

I didn’t like the style they chose for the imperial court, it didn’t feel regal or imposing. Even the palace looked like that mansion that used to be a funerary home that Kim Kardashian bought some years ago. I’m not saying it was bad, because it wasn’t and you can tell that the costume designer and production designer did a lot of research and put great work into it.
