What really sets Dune apart is that it's like attention to detail but to a whole new level; both in terms of the cinematic experience (like audio and visuals), but also in terms of the story itself (the different cultures and the environment and the technology)
@victorblh2fknji5 ай бұрын
In truth, this is absolutely not new in terms of history, it may be partly new in cinema yes, but not in literature. Especially since Herbert created this universe in the 60s. There are so many others today... And there were already some at the time, of course. (Obviously DUNE remains a masterpiece, even among the thousands of other existing stories - and the hundreds of hundreds of stories that are worth it. Herbert knew how to push his thinking and research in every way. Probably even millions of stories. / Authors I have no knowledge of at all, coming from countries somewhat out of the way & whose writings have never been translated, but who nevertheless deserve it x1000. Other masterpieces that we pass by in total ignorance.)

Welcome to true sci-fi my friend. I love fantasy, but as I grew older, I transitioned heavily into sci-fi. Fantasy is fantastical. Things are often explained with the reasoning "just because" or to translate "magic." . Sci-fi often actually puts effort into explaining it's world, the cultures that exist within it, and the technology those cultures have created to continue existing, and more.

Jessica's fear with Paul's test had as much to do with her relationship with the Reverend Mother as it did with the test itself. Mohiam had been Jessica's instructor. Jessica had also gone against the direct commands of the BG to give birth to a daughter. Jessica was ranked as a Sister (rank and file member) in the BG and Mohiam was the head of the Order at the time of Dune, so it's like having the Space Pope show up to your house to check out the mess you made after you willingly defied them.

You summed up perfectly why Dune 1 & 2 stands head and shoulders above most action sci-fis. They're both incredibly well made movies with nearly every scene playing a role. It still amuses me no end seeing the haters and the Lynch nostalgia bros trying to claim the new movies have bad CGI, bad acting, no colour, bad writing, they're boring, the fight scenes are bad. Its such pathetic cope 😂 Villeneuve's Dune shows us what happens when studios get out of the director's way and just let em cook!

Yes, the colour-design was so terrible, that in the second movie they used infrared-stock for purely artistic effect. They also had the audacity to pioneer a completely new technique for CGI to allow for a more realistic toning of the scenes.
@anthonyfaiell3263Ай бұрын
Those are ridiculous complaints. I loved the movies, but my only completely valid complaint is how some scenes I needed to have my volume up at 50 to even hear the dialogue, and then I would have to drop my volume down to 20 when it got louder. The dynamic range was absolutely horrible. Some people say it was better in theaters or on a high quality system... but that's not really a good reason to me to have such poor sound design. It's sad too because the actual music and sound effects are phenomenal. I just wish it was made in a tighter range so I didn't have to sit there spamming my volume on my remote to watch it.
@dhairyaskepsi4517Ай бұрын
Hey @anthonyfaiell3263 that’s actually because they’re using a different technology for the audio - one that your current sound system doesn’t seem to be equipped with - I used to have the same issue before I upgraded my tv. This might be the reason?

@@dhairyaskepsi4517 Yea I just have an older tv, no sound system. So I'm sure that is it. Nonetheless, it is still a grievance that I experienced. But as I said, it didn't ruin it for me. Fun fact, the origibal books were written in the '60s, and they still go so goddam hard. A setting like star wars clearly shows its age when conpared to modern sience fiction, but dune for me reads like ut was written yesterday.
@anthonyfaiell3263Ай бұрын
Star wars was more of a soft magic space fantasy. Dune was a straight up sci-fi. Things like the stillsuits fascinated me. Technology specifically designed for people who live in these inhospitable conditions and function off of real biology. In star wars, the desert planet has no mention of water acquisition, the cold planets have no mention of heat generation... There's just little to no exploration of anything besides the characters and the "force." Dune feels like a living breathing world, Star Wars feels like a fantasy world. . I still enjoy Star Wars for what it is. A fun space fantasy. But Dune is truly something special.
@feldhdleh19 күн бұрын
It is not my very favourite SF book but it right up there and is certainly the richest great SF book in existence, IMO. Nothing can match the coherence of the world building that Herbert lays out while advancing a great story that can appeal to so many. He did not rely on time clues and that is why, despite being written in the 60's, it stands up so well (for example, Foundation suffers in this regard). Overall, Dune is a fantastic experience. I have read and re-read it many times. The movies stand as great tributes to the book. Denis is a master of his craft.

sound absolutely makes the difference, as someone who re-listens to soundtrack over and over, they are effectively everlasting. the fact that youtube doesnt mind compressing an image to garbage, but the sound still has to be synced and good or else people will be put off (which twitch sucks at and gets commented on a lot).

I’ve seen a lot of fans of the book gripe about this-I agree that that scene is great, but it does not adapt well to film, especially without making certain tonal shifts to accommodate what makes that scene so good in the book. The dinner chapter thrives because you get to be in everyone’s head as you watch it all play out. This is a perspective experience best achieved via reading. Film and TV can adapt a similar perspective, but the medium has to incorporate an omniscient voice throughout in order for this perspective to be thematically consistent with the experience. As a fan of the books, I’m glad Denis stuck to the strengths of what film could adapt from the book.

I loved the Dune movies, without having read the books, but I read the Rama series and they're one of my mmost beloved books.
