Some little nice touches I enjoyed in this scene: - Contrasting Salusa Secundus with Arrakis. Arrakis gets no rain, while Secundus seemingly gets no sun. - Lingering on that one Sardaukar soldier who is being anointed with the blood. It conveys to us that the Sardaukar are still human, but they're also to be feared. Why? Because this guy looks to be in his 40s, maybe older. You don't get to that age without being a viciously fierce warrior. The interplay between the two is also great. The Sardaukar Commander tries to belittle the Harkonnens. "Why do you need us, if you guys are so great?" kind of thing. Piter neatly turns this around by saying "The Atreides legions are the finest in the Imperium" - i.e., "the Atreides legions are better than everyone. Including you". This inflames his pride, and he turns bites back in defence; "we are Sardaukar. Those who stand against us fall" - i.e., "nobody is better than us". Piter is letting him feel in charge. He follows up with "just so, three battalions, as agreed" - i.e., "ok, prove it then". But, the Sardaukar Commander gets the last word; "the Emperor commands it. It is done". In other words "ok, but not because _you_ asked, but because the _Emperor_ has told us to do it. Never forget who is _really_ in charge here". All that conveyed in just a few lines.
@mst3KGf
@mst3KGf Жыл бұрын
Precisely. Especially that shit-talking part, because the Sardaukar commander is genuinely irked that the Harokonnens can't take care of the matter themselves, as would be true to their warrior culture. He's implying, "You've got more soldiers, true, but they must be pretty shitty soldiers if you need us to actually do the job." And of course, he gets the last word, as you said, by stating, "The Emperor told us to do it, so we'll obey. But you're a bunch of weak-ass losers who need our help. Never forget that."

In just 3 sentences we learn most of the important information we need to know about them. -They answer directly to the emperor -They answer ONLY to the emperor -They are not humble about their skills and accolades -They have rarely, if ever failed You are now ready to watch them in action later with no need for clunky exposition.

The idea of this scene is also to show, that from his point of view - even to the fact that he didn't want to or can dispute it - the deal made between Emperor and Baron is bad and wrong. That he is sceptical, looking at the oblivious balance of power between Houses where Sardaukar troops are simply unnecessary, and is clearly seeing that this is some kind of a setup. But he can't disagree with the order, or decline the terms or do something else about it. So he, personally and specifically, wanted to articulate and to demonstrate to the Baron ambassador that he isn't trust him, or his words, or even his planing. And will do only what Emperor demands and not a single step more or further. Just like he will not tolerate any kind of command or leadership from a Harkonnen.

Salusa Secundus is also supposed to be extremely cold, with widespread radioactive contamination and deadly animals and plants. In fact, one of the most abundant plants on the planet, is called Shiggawire and its basically living metal, like organic barded wire, which the Sardaukar use to tie up their hair and to garrotte victims with when deployed as assassins.

Perhaps I'm reading into this scene too much, but Piter seems super uncomfortable, maybe since he's used to Harkonnen sadism and hedonism and is now suddenly thrust into a place where none of that matters. The Sardaukar can't be bought, sold, reasoned with, threatened, hurt in any meaningful way, and respond to neither fear nor intimidation nor the desires of the flesh. He's used to people who kill for pleasure, but those who kill simply because the Emperor wills it? Disconcerting, perhaps.

Spartans where not diciplined in that way you think of or is shown in that scene. Dicipline there is by the word "modern", meaning a synchron moving of ppl as a body of an unit, deeply rooted in european parade culture. This kind of "dicipline of moving as a unit" dosent existed in spartan military. Especially not in any parade way. We can argue that the macedons forged something like that for there big phalanxes and sarrisas, but even then it was more used for battle itself, as for parade.

Yeah, the Sardaukar by the time Dune takes place have been coasting on their reputation for a long time. Because no Sardaukar have ever been captured, they speak their own battle language, and no one really knows where they came from (besides Leto and Thufir Hawat), they have a terrifying mystique about them. But because of this, they basically expected the fremen to just roll over and surrender as soon as the Sardaukar showed up--they weren't expecting these desert hooligans to put up a real fight, so they end up getting stomped.

The Atredies brought 6 brigades to Dune and based on the Harkonnen spice/monetary reserves they expected the Harkonnens could field 6 brigades to retake Dune. Duncan let a raid to Geidi Prime that destroyed much of the Harkonnen spice reserves to get them into this even playing field. The Atredies plan was then to gain 6 brigades of Fremen allies to fight the Harkonnens 2 to 1. They got wiped out because they didn't get the Fremen on their side fast enough and the Harkonnens went into debt to field 6 LEGIONS of Sardukar, 10 times what they were expecting (not 3 brigades as stated in this scene). Plus, no one expected the emperor to send Sardukar. Atredies troops are more than a match for Harkonnens, but Sardukar are another matter.

Not entirely right. In the book the Duke and the Mentat Thufir miscalculated a few factors: 1. They thought the Emperor will only initiate the assault with the excuse of their poor spice production, which will be within 6 months, but the Harkonnen attacked just within *12 days* . 2. They overlooked the revenue that the House Harkonnen generated from Dune in the past 80 years. The Harkonnen literally used the power of money to the extreme during the assault on the Atredies, spending their 50 years of revenue on it such as battleships. 3. They did not know there is a traitor among them (Dr. Yueh). Disabling the shield and jamming the coms from the inside out really screwed them up and served as the final nail on their coffin.

I don’t know that it was ever implicitly stated in the movie, but in the novel the Sardaukar were to be in Harkonnen battle gear to hide the emperor’s involvement. To the other Great Houses of the Landsraad this needed to look like the culmination of the centuries old feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen, with the emperor staying neutral as is custom.

I think the linguist they had for the movie basically said that in order to move faster in battle, they essentially have removed several syllables from English to make it more efficient. They are speaking English, just with parts of the word removed. "No! We are the Sardaukar!" becomes "N. th Sardaukar!" which when spoken fast sounds like "Nah! Sardaukar!" “Those who stand against us fall!” becomes “ se-who st- gai-st u- falla “ which said fast sounds like “suh-oost-ageesta-fallah” or as you have written "Sekuse akista fade"

@@orionion The line over a vowel is called a macron (no relation to the French president). It means it's a long vowel. When that is there, the letter is pronounced how the letter sounds in the alphabet. So ā would be pronounced like the letter itself: aye. It's in this word to indicate that while "a" is pronounced like the letter, it is separate from the "e" at the end, so you would still pronounce the "e," hence the need for the line to tell you. So the word would be pronounced feydeh, and not feyd.

There were two scenes that took my breath away and that I wanted to be repeated, right then and there in the movie theatre. One - when Baron rises above his throne. Second one - this one. I kept postponing reading the book, but after this masterpiece I finally decided to read it myself. And what was told by Leto Atreides to Paul was actually pretty interesting. No one in the Imperium actually knows where do Sardaukar come from. People think that they are brought up from around the Empire and taught on Salusa Secundus. Truth is - they are made by the planet. That planet is so difficult to survive on - that kids from birth are basically forced to survive and be strong warriors. They are also forced to be extremely loyal to their Emperor and no one else - this is why nobody can't disobey him. Only Arrakis could compare with it - and that is why Leto Atreides wanted alliance with Freemen.

It's a planet-prison, forbidden by the Emperor because it build the strongest soldiers. And the fact that untrained fremens are already superior to Sardaukars one on one is the reason the Emperor couldn't allow Leto to govern Arrakis. It was a one stone two birds situation: supress Leto and his influence on the Houses while making sure the Harkoddens (or whatever it's spelled) will remain under his control by making them rule illegally. I started reading the books after the movie too, you know it's a good movie when it pushes you to the source material.

Herbert was a geologist, and wrote the book from that point of view, which is what makes it so deep and fascinating. He held that humans live symbiotically with the planet they live on. They shape the planet, and the planet shapes them. Harkonnens, Atreides, Fremen. I love how much detail he goes into about 'planetology'. I thought it very interesting he made a point of saying that only the toughest survive till their 7th birthday on Selusa, whereas you do well to survive 3 days on Arrakis. This scene, and several other scenes in this film, demonstrate beautifully how a film adaptation doesn't need to just be slavishly loyal to the source material, but can even improve upon the source material by bringing something new to the table. For those who haven't read the novel, the throat-singing like chant is not in it at all, same with the mysterious blood ritual they seem to be performing. All of this totally original to the film, as are several other masterful touches- such as the Baron's freaky humanoid spider pet thing, Liet-Kynes's death scene, and the bizarre black sludge chemical bath that the Baron heals in after being poisoned. None of those things are in the novel, and yet they are totally faithful to the novel because they fit into the world of Dune so seamlessly. I'm sure if Frank Herbert were alive, he would love them (just like he actually liked the much-maligned weirding modules in David Lynch's film.)

You're spot on - loyal to the source material and world building without being constrained by it! I really hope VD relents and does release an extended cut of the first movie though - there's apparently so many scenes they shot that didn't make it into the final film - and I bet they're ALL epic.

I like how subtle the whole thing is. The shot of the soldiers being drained of blood is maybe less than 2 total seconds. Combined with the rain, all you see is liquid in those little channels, and you can only tell it's blood for like, a millisecond when they scoop out more and it falls and you can see the red color. So much understated horror in this scene.

I think there is an outline of Salusa Secundus's enviroment given by Herbert somewhere in the books. I always thought it's full of extremes, volcanic eruptions, frost and snow storms, hurricanes etc. My idea is based on the fact that the planet's recent climate is a result of years of weather and climate control, as it is a former imperial capital planet. They did it in order to inhibit natural disasterious events like storms, and after a bit, the climate just snapped.

Loyalty to beyond death. Brutality surpassing the barbaric. Disciplined to a blade's edge. And a dynastic, ritualistic fervor to shape the weapon that is the Sardaukar. In under a minute, you know exactly what drives them, what the fundamentals of their culture are, and what they are both willing and capable of accomplishing. Within mere moments, you know exactly what the Sardaukar are, and what it means to stand against them. This is cinematography _mastered_ in the utmost literal definition of the word. Audio-visual storytelling with surgical precision, to show you in moments what a chapter of writing could not convey. Denis Villeneuve, the director, is a cinematic genius. The man damn near turns directing, one of the most creative fields out there, into an exact science. I cannot understate how impressive it is to turn something as subjective as cinematography into something so objectively brilliant. Lighting, atmosphere, placement, order of presentation, scope, audio-visual coherence, the language, and all with a minimalist precision... Everything is intertwined, and it just clicks. In one word: Lasting. I for one, cannot wait to see this tale continued.

@@_ArsNovaMy understanding is that the Sardukar and Fremen were close enough to peers, Sardukar would hunt Fremen for a real fight. I'm not talking about the worms or the ones who got nuked. I'm talking me about the ones who got the Dothraki treatment, running into battle and then just silence. And they didn't need to win, obviously they were never going to win, but the ones in 2 were cleaned up, more civilized, less fierce, they were like the Kingsguard, sort of just knights. In the first one, they felt like demons in human shape, with the blood sacrifice and the brutal language. Remembr the first one, how the Atriedes soldiers were never going to win, never supposed to win, but it was clear that they were still badasses? the badass spirit got taken out of the Sardukar in 2, totally sanitized.

These kind of scenes and artistic explorations offer such an enrichment to the story. They really flesh out the very peculiar dune universe in ways the books often don't, since they are often more focussed on the intrigues between characters and their thoughts & plans. The descriptions of cultures, people, places outside of Arrakis, functionaries and technology are often somewhat made into abstracts or just kinda left aside to make space for the philosophy of the main characters in the later novels, so things like these really make the story more complete in my opinion. Not to throw shade on the books of course, love them, but there's just quite some space left to discover the dune universe and I think this movie and hopefully upcoming ones do exactly that.
