3:20 it's been a minute since I've read the books but I seem to remember that the laser guns in the universe (lasguns as they are called) have an explosive reaction if they hit a shield so they typically turned them off in open battlefields. Also, the shields produced a vibrating pattern that attracts worms so probably another reason why they weren't activated.

in the book they were remote controlled too, if it was autonomous it would be a crime against the primary commandment of the Butlerian Jihad, its explained in the books that due to size constraints of the technology that the camera of the drone was primitive and purely motion based which is why being motionless enough made them invisible to the drone pilot
