He didn't legally marry her to appear available for political reasons even though he wasn't planning on ever being with another woman. On that note, "The Shield Wall", is not the same kind of shield, but is a natural formation of rock that surrounds the north pole of the planet (where the major industries and administration centers are), providing a natural barrier against the worms and storms.

FYI, Shields: Overwhelmed by a large mass, bigger shields are more resistant to larger masses, thus a harvester is not ok against a work but a city is, this why some fast attacks punch str8 thru, too.

in the book they were remote controlled too, if it was autonomous it would be a crime against the primary commandment of the Butlerian Jihad, its explained in the books that due to size constraints of the technology that the camera of the drone was primitive and purely motion based which is why being motionless enough made them invisible to the drone pilot
