How charismatic was Leto? The man who betrayed him to his death loved him enough to give him the means to kill their mutual enemy with his last breath, and his final action was to ensure the safety of Leto's beloved Jessica and Paul.
@YaroKasear
@YaroKasear 2 жыл бұрын
I actually have a fairly interesting take on Yueh. While he played a part in the Duke's downfall, I actually don't think he genuinely betrayed Duke Leto. It really stems from one of the last things he said to Duke Leto: "I wish to kill a man. Not you, my poor Duke, you were already dead." His entire point was not that he was being an opportunist, but that Leto's time was over and he couldn't stop it. But here Yueh had an opportunity to give House Atreides a fighting chance to rise again AND give himself a chance to avenge his own wife. I think one of the most significant fatal mistakes Baron Harkonnen makes is thinking he broke Yueh's conditioning. But what if Yueh knew that Hawat wasn't going to succeed and that Leto was doomed? At that point he probably realized the best he could actually do was save Paul and Jessica and give Leto a chance to kill Vladimir. My take is that the conditioning was never broken. Of a certainty, Yueh's loyalty is divided, but it's between Leto and his own wife. The Harkonnens and the Emperor never actually turned Yueh against Leto. I may have to reread the novel for the billionth time, but I seem to recall Yueh even lamenting that he was only going to be remembered as a deceitful traitor by history. But I believe he knew that while Leto's fate was sealed, he was in a position to improve the outcome for House Atreides by even a small amount. Sure enough, if it wasn't for Yueh, Paul and Jessica would have been killed. Not even the Fremen were actually in a position to save Paul and Jessica at the time of House Atreides' downfall.

Remember that Harkonen only thought that there were a few thousand Fremen on the planet, that they had somehow nearly wiped them out of existence, so the actual fighting force was vastly underestimated. Also, Baron Harkonen, in his arrogance, thought that Fremen were savages, little more than an annoying rabble that he could deal with easily. Boy, was he wrong.
@KohuGaly
@KohuGaly 2 жыл бұрын
What even more impressive is _why_ Harkonen thought that. It's because, for millennia, Fremen were bribing the spacing guild to fake the satellite imagery of the entire southern hemisphere, making it look uninhabitable. This means, Fremen are actually mining more spice than the Harkonen - otherwise the Spacing Guild would have just told the Harkonen the truth and let them take over entire Dune to increase the spice production. Literally the only thing that was stopping the Fremen from taking over the galaxy, was that they didn't want to... until Paul showed up....

I think this is an important factor that Matt could have mentioned when outlining the four points of Leto's (Hawat's?) plan. The Emperor wouldn't have hand-delivered Leto the only planet where he could get the super-warriors he needed to make his army if there was any chance the numbers to do so were there. The Harkonnen overconfidence proved to be their downfall here.
@crcurran
@crcurran 2 жыл бұрын
The Emperor and the Spacing Guild made big mistakes too. The Guild took the bribe from the Fremen to not have spy satellites over the deep desert. The Fremen did so to operate in secret their long term ecology project (terraforming) but the lack of satellites also had the side benefit of hiding the Fremen numbers. The Spacing Guild knew the Fremen could cause some disruptions to spice production but without knowing their numbers it was a vast underestimation of their capability. The spice production was something they were profiting off immensely and the spice itself was needed for their folding of space to function and therefore production was crucial. Those profits and an extremely generous bribe as extra from the Fremen as well as a fear of a disruptions kept them in quiet fear. It resulted it left them at a information disadvantage, and anyone else who could have used that information including the Emperor were at a disadvantage. As for the Emperor, remember, Kynes is the Emperor's ecologist and representative on Arakis who performs certain Imperium tasks such as the rare transfer of the fief planet, Arakis, between the Harkonnen and the Atriedes. The Emperor's top man unbeknownst to him is the secret leader of the Fremen. Of course he misleads the Emperor as to how many Fremen there are. The Emperor without realizing the dire mistake brings the Duke and the fanatical Fremen together. (second half of the book spoiler ahead --> ) the Lady Jessica and Paul utilize the Bene Gessuit's prophecy seeds planted in the Fremen culture centuries ago to embed themselves as spiritual leaders in a fanatical society who are face re-occupation by their enemies the Harkonnen.

I am somewhat peeved at what they did to Liet as well. The film hints that Liet has these grand plans for Dune being terraformed, but it's done in such an afterthefact, slip shod fashion. One never has the feeling that Liet is a force to be reckoned with in Villeneuve's film
@andrewshandle
@andrewshandle 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is a bit of hindsight 20/20 because you know the book. They make a _much_ bigger deal about how the Harkonnen are economically much more powerful than the Emperor. As someone who's read the book multiple times I knew what was going on, but I spoke to a few people who the movie was the first exposure to Dune and they all were confused at why the Emperor didn't team up with House Atredies against House Harkonnen instead. The main reason being is economic superiority is something every viewer can understand, but a few vague references to a powerful army can easily be missed. Not having any internal monologue was an interesting choice by he director, and I think it _mostly_ works, but it fails in this case.

@@hawkthetraveler6344 For as heavy as the book is, and as dense as it can be, it reads quick. Which is good, because after finishing it you really should do a second read to pick up on things hinted at but missed later. I confess to not being a fan of the style of book, as when I was handed the book to read I had other things on my plate. I was reading Pern, or Star Wars novels. I would spend hours chasing down Dragonlance at the local libraries to try to read them all. I didn't appreciate Dune too much, I blew past it to read it and "see what the fuss was about". But after reading Dune, I found one trilogy of novels which rather changed my view on a property I had been only casually into at that point. I found "Dark Force Rising" by Timothy Zahn being given to me as a gift. And I realized I'd need to seek out more Zahn and read it. Instead I met Miles Vorkosigan and Simon Snowlock. Dune became overshadowed by these three series. Hearing Matt talk about it makes me sad I picked it up too young to pierce the layers of the book.

Matt, I LOVED the Dune CCG! I couldn't get any of my friends to engage with it. I was only like 13 when it came out and the rules were tough for me, and none of my friends had yet listened to me and read the books, so I was on my own. I even tried to get a group together at my local card shop but nobody ever showed any interest. So I collected them. Matt you don't understand how rare that is. I was NOT a collector, I was a player. I bought cards to build more decks to play more. MTG, Decipher's Star Trek, Star Wars, even Pokemon and YuGiOh, I played them all. I kept them in card sized boxes. Except Star Trek, and Dune. I carefully organized my Dune collection, and kept buying them well after I had given up trying to get people to play it with me. I bought them till the card shop stopped carrying them. Well after I stopped playing CCGs because my friend group stopped and I was tired of dragging new people into games, I had those cards. They had a nice spot on my shelf, something I really enjoyed. In fact, the only reason I don't *still* have them is because of family drama when I moved out of my stepfather's house. At the time I couldn't appreciate what I loved about the game, but now I think it was all the player interaction. Not just card play and counter play, but the bidding rounds and stuff, it felt like real political dealings. The few times I got people to seriously play, the bidding stuff always had lots of table talk. Threats and deals and stiff. Dude you just blew my mind, you have been affecting me with your work since I was a kid! Not in a small way either!

On the day where I finished listening to Dune Messiah and listened to Ghost on the rest of my way to work I see in my lunch break that Matt is talking about Dune while wearing a Ghost shirt! That's freaking rad. Glad to finally have this third part.

Great video, I started watching your videos when I was a boy and I was inspired by your stories. I still watch to this day grown into a young man who has been drawn to create some of my own stories, drawn to inspire others like you have. Thank you.

And once again Mr. Colville you have proven to be the orator most extraordinary. This was a marvelous breakdown. Your narration of the segment from the game, actually made me tear up. The way you evoke such a sense of gravitas with every word is truly mesmerizing. Thank you for this series of videos.

great video. One thing that I think the movie did not do well was to establish de Sardaukar as huge threats. Their visuals does not strike fear, or even tell they are very special. Also, everytime they fought in the movie their skills were indistinguisheble from regular soldiers

I consider myself the Dune person among my friends. I have read/listened to all 7 and most of the others. I had not considered that it was about the fear of a comparable army. Brilliant insight, Matt. I've loved this whole series and each video has taught me something I didn't know. Thank you for helping me love this story all the more, Matt.

I still have my original WH40k rule book from the 80s. It really was a mash up of all sci-fi; Dune, Aliens, Judge Dredd, Starship Troopers (the book), Asimovs stuff even a bit of Mad Max in places. The chaos mythos from WHFB was added later to give them some of their own IP.

The story is epic in itself, but ,Matt, you casually make it even more impressive with your amazing rhetorics and authentic narration. You could count the dirt under my finger nails and it still would sound amazingly interesting and cool. Thanks for doing this so dilligently and I hope you will never stop this for I will also never stop listening to it!

This is a point that many people miss and, in fact, I missed upon first (and probably second) reading. After we saw the movie, my son said that the Emperor was trapping Duke Leto to control the spice. I said, no, think about it: why would the Emperor trap the Duke by giving him control over the one planet that produces spice? The spice is important, true, but that's not what the Emperor fears. What else does Arrakis have? He thought about it a minute and I could see when it dawned on him: Fremen! Exactly. An army of fanatical warriors who could challenge the Emperor's Sardaukar. It's a subtle point in the book and glossed over in the movie, but so important to understand the political dynamic. Thanks for the video!

After arriving at work and turning on my computer, I prepared myself for a mundane eight hours of accounting. As my current tasked of posting journals required little critical thought, I decided to pull up KZbin and play something in the back ground. Then I saw it, and my heart and mind squealed with glee: Dune, Part Three: The Prison Planet. Thanks Matt, for talking about Dune. I read the book the first time years ago when I was in the 7th grade. While I could tell it was a Great Book, I also recognized that I wasn't quite old enough to fully absorb it. After you released your first two videos, I decided to reread it and devoured the 800 pages of my copy in three weeks, surprising even myself. And now I was prepared to savor the book and its riches. I've never read the sequels and curious if you have, or if anyone here has, and what their thoughts on them are. I've heard they get kinda weird and that's it.

I loved the 84 film sadly never knew about the book for quite some time. Many years after I'm at a Goodwill shopping for winter coats I notice a black book stained with what I suspect is a coffee ring. I pick up said book and to my surprise it was DUNE. At checkout I ask how much, the teller says free. My inner self squeals a bit. Something to read on the flight. Sadly I have poor discipline for reading. I never got passed the Sadukar assault on the palace. Many years later the new DUNE is announced! I searched to see if the local library has an audio book of it. I listened to it at work happily with goosebumps all over. That dramatic read of the crawler rescue made me pause my breakfast making. 😂

Hi Matt. I rarely leave comments on KZbin. I have read Dune multiple times. I spent two weeks of PTO searching used book stores in Phoenix for the Dune Encyclopedia. I mean, I really like Dune. It changed the way I look at the world. I had never put together that the Duke, Gurney, Duncan, and Thufir, combined with the Fremen were *the* reason that the Emperor had to eliminate the Duke. Looking back it seems so obvious lol. So yes, thank you, I learned something! Also, I second everyone here that I'd listen to you read and audio book of Dune. Really great stuff. Thanks for taking the time.
