I think being vague about the fruit is kind of misleading in the wrong way - if there's a bowl of mixed fruit that's one thing, but if it's a bowl of specific fruit there's no reason to use the generic term. The PCs themselves would notice that it's all cherries.

I was a big fan of Paizo, and the Paizo forums, before 4e because I liked reading their adventures and dreaming of playing D&D again. Their writing was great, but getting my friends to play 3e D&D was impossible, no adult wanted to read those huge books. 4e was a great time for us, I got my friends to play, and we are still playing 5e now regularly. But watching the Paizo forums, and the insane rage vented there (I don't blame them, I do blame their fans) really calcified the feelings I had that nerds can be deeply horrible people. Also, that you should not trust the 'internet zeitgeist' of nerds about anything, because you always hear the loudest a-holes with the biggest axe to grind. This was an interesting history and fit my experiences well. A year after this vid came out, 5.5 is not a big deal really. Some improvements for sure. I am migrating to it but only once my campaign wraps up. The main reason is tools, Foundry VTT is amazing and the support tied to WOTC is much better in 2024.

The rabbit hole is deep and twisted. To call it a hole is an insult. To call it a warren would be underselling it. The appropriate terminology would be "A Marathon Level."

Hey Matthew - Thanks for the video! I didn't know about Jon's books until I saw this. Based on your band shirts (Com Truise, Ghost, etc.), I'd be interested in you making a future video about band/song/album reviews. Just a thought.

Regarding Matt's comments around 15:00, I'm that guy. I'm very excited about DS, but I know my group won't quite care yet. To solve that conundrum, I'm running a campaign for them that just goes through the 'Where Evil Lives' book as a semi-connected string of contracts undertaken by a mercenary guild.

.... I forgot to add part 2 of my plan.... In a year or so, I'll explain that the awesome dungeons we have been going through are all made by a company that just released their own game and I want to give it a try.

On the contrary... Most players dont get clues... But you can highlight things by being specific. And point out that it is a bowl full of only cherries. Playing Tomb of Annihilation and Secret of the Dragon Emperor i learned to change out words or repeat things the playes do. And then emphasis words You only LOOK at it? Because they need to touch You are looking DIRECTLY the WALL? When there is a mirror that affects what you see

This stream is exactly what I was looking for: half tutorial, half inspiration. When I started writing an adventure, I went looking for some video tutorials online, but I found too many of them didn't take the actual quality of the adventure seriously. Think: "well this is just a tutorial, so it doesn't matter what's IN the dungeon or what the players DO." So they all end up being...skeleton caves, goblin lairs, etc. Which can be fun, but I didn't really need guidance on how to put monsters in a room. On a related note, when you said it wasn't collaborative in the first stream, I breathed a sigh of relief. Watching one person's ideas and vision come to life is a lot more interesting than a watered-down adventure-by-committee. Anyway thank you for the stream!

Honestly, I started you watching this channel after all that. I loved when the running the game lessons were direct from "last week's stream" and I often went back to the campaign diary to see the it happen in real time.

16:00 "Paladin" has a specific meaning in the English language, though, and it doesn't mean just believing whatever. Further, I'm not sure what a paladin of neutrality would even do; thematically speaking, why would they even have the same skill sets?

Its funny, I was introduced to dnd by a friend who gave me the 3.5 edition Players handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Masters Guide out of nowhere. One day in highschool he just approached me and said that this is a game that was too complicated for him to learn but he thought i might like it and gave me those books. I never expressed interest in Dnd before, i didn't even know what it was, i only ever heard of the name and that it was a pen and paper game not really knowing what that meant. I remember going home and opening the book up to the "what is this game" section after looking at all the cool art. That section had to do its actual job of grabbing my interest. Ironically a section im sure most people skip because they most likely already know what it was if they bought the books. No one i knew played the game so it was up to me to learn and teach everyone. There was no youtube, i didnt really have access to the internet yet so the "example of play" section was my literal bible and only example of how this game was supposed to be played. Every time i played was me going "Hey remember that thing we did last last time? yeaaah, we did that wrong it actually works like this" then the next time we played i said "oh actually that was wrong too its actually like this" and since no one else knew what we were doing, anytime a question came up it was up to me to find the answer. I think at some point i gave up and just made up rules on the fly and looked it up later which is advice that most people give for that exact situation. All this to say I actually did have to learn that way from scratch with no outside help. I played videogame rpgs so i had that going for me. I honestly have no idea how i kept with it. I know if i had to do that again today i probably would have gave up. I don't talk to that friend anymore, time just drifted us apart no drama, but sometimes think about how he has no idea that he basically handed me THE hobby i would do for the rest of my life on a whim.

My personal gun solution is just to have paper cartridges be invented. For your flintlocks, muskets, etc. This way, reloading for those older styled weapons isn't cumbersome in combat, you don't need a factory to churn metal cartridges, and they'll still be rare by their mechanical design, and the fact that you need to buy black powder.

You gave your players every opportunity to get out of the situation they put themselves in and they got mad about the consequences of their own actions. 1.) They were warned not to take the shield to the keep, which they did anyway. 2.) They were told explicitly that the knights were not the ones who should have been in the tower, but went along with them anyway. 3.) They had opportunities to escape at any point up until they entered the castle, but went in anyway. That's not a railroad. That's them putting themselves into a no win scenario of their own making.

I haven't watched a ton of streams, but these two have been a huge inspiration to take the pieces of a standard written adventure and build my own underlying A plot. Thanks Matt! Also very cool to get to see Matt the Man vs Matt the Internet Personality. Mostly the same, but funny to see how bluntly you tell it like it is when things don't work out the way some people would like. Stay real, MC.
