Just commenting on y'all talkin' about Feyd at the end. When Paul walked in, I feel like Feyd was admiring a fellow fighter, one he's heard a LOT about. Muad'dib is a devil to the Harkonnen. And Feyd likes a challenge. But when Paul killed the Baron, I think the admiration grew, because this fighter was also just as cold blooded as him. Feyd doesn't know it's Paul Atreides, soul surviving member of the Family Name, so he wouldn't know of Paul's vendetta. Feyd just sees a legendary warrior walk right up to the Baron and execute him for no apparent reason. This Muad'dib is a mirror image to Feyd.

I appreciate y’alls reaction to the Fremen and the fanaticism that had been cultivated by the Bene Gesserit for centuries. What I’ve been most struck by are the number of reactors (not all) who see that as humorous, often laughing at the Fremen to include Stilgar saying Lisan al Gaib. Makes me wonder if folks missed the message and/or laughing because they’re uncomfortable with that aspect. *note: I’m not saying all reactors have this reaction but a number of them do*

One of the things I wish Denis had left in his adaptation was the fact that Chani was the daughter of Liet. In the book and the mini-series, the fact that Paul and Chani both lost their fathers to the treachery of the Harkonnens/Emperor was a bonding point for them and helped you to understand why they were drawn to each other.
@wathsi99

I wonder if it's the due to the fact that it'll make Chani not be a generational Freman. Chani's character was changed to be the voice of secular youth who believed in Freman than the out worlder prophecy propagated by BG. Lite Kynes's dad was not mentioned in the film but it makes sense that the movie goers will identify Lite as an agent serving the Empire but at the sametime working as a double agent for Freman due to their connection to Freman.

It kept getting more violent, my seat was like a bucking bronco trying to throw me off, smashing into my back and butt that it hurt! I reached for my son fearing for his safety. He was screaming with joy! We both let go of our seats. Raised our arms and raised our feet off the floor. We rode the worm with Paul! The soundtrack was deafening beyond belief. I wonder whether Denis will merge Messiah with Children of Dune, like in the SyFy miniseries. Messiah is really more intrigue than anything else, and it also is NOT the end of Paul`s arc. That happens in Children, which ends the arc of an Atreides generation. Maybe Denis could try that. I mean, the SyFy miniseries had about 4.5 hrs total, so I guess a third grand finale of about Return of the King length would be feasible. One big reason would be Alia - it would be a waste of Anya if they didn`t incorporate more of her arc. Anyway, I`m rambling without a movie, but I will be there first day! nice one guys. My biggest gripe with this is that if you read the first book there's really no indication that Herbert had this in mind when writing it. The book makes you root for Paul in a way that doesn't give any kind of "warning" that you're wrong for agreeing. I think if your goal is to write a book that shows how dangerous it is to follow a charismatic leader, you really do need to show how bad the consequences get(like with Hitler), but in Paul's case he really is the Messiah of the Fremen and the Kwisatz Haderach, so it's simply perfectly rational to follow him. He really is a god-like figure in the story, he's not just a random guy who manages to convince people to follow him because he has such a convincing personality.

I love these films sooooooo much, and I really wish we'd gone to see them in theaters; probably going to do that for "Messiah." I did read the novel after part 1, but I honestly prefer the films, even though they cut the dinner scene overall these films are the story COME TO LIFE, and it is GLORIOUS. I do think they're probably going to merge "Messiah" with "Children of Dune," and we may get our first major time jump at the start, or they may just keep going with the sped up timeline and crank up the emotional devastation for Paul as a result. If you would like to see more of Austin Butler's work, I HIGHLY recommend checking out "Elvis," he turns in a fantastic performance; I will also say Tom Hanks is not overly distracting for me, but his accent is...a choice.

Herbert said he wrote Dune to challenge the idea of the Hero's Journey. He disliked the idea of a destined hero and wanted to show the danger of prophecy being manipulated and manufactured as well as the danger of blind faith. He wanted a story that upended the idea of a hero coming to lead the people to glory. Paul is no hero, he is a cautionary tale. Also, while the Atredies are better than the Harkonnens in many ways they are still colonizers who do some far more subtle (at first) damage to Fremen culture. Also, love the Last Dragon Shirt!

I won't nitpick the book vs movie stuff overall, but I do want to address Feyd's poison dart. There's no way they could have used that. In a book, you can introduce and explain it, and explain why it isn't used with just narration and a character's thoughts. You can't do that in a movie. To introduce it and for the audience to actually know what it is, characters have to talk about it. Even if it's just Feyd talking to himself, which would be weird. And then you have to use it. You can't not use chekhovs gun, and you can't explain why it doesn't get used in a movie fight scene. There's no time, and the plot exposition would kill the pacing.

Alia is impossible to cast - literally impossible - per the book. You have to age her up or leave her in utero. There isn't a 3yo on the planet who can behave like an adult for long enough to film her scenes, even if the filmmakers overwrote her voice with, say, a 9yo actor.
@LordVolkov
@LordVolkov 7 ай бұрын
@@zoesumra9152 And accelerating her growth (like every other adaptation) wouldn't have worked because why exactly? It's not like DV stuck to the book in Part 2. They are going to age her up anyway for Messiah. Anya Taylor-Joy is almost 30 (and will be by the time Messiah is out). There's only a 12 year gap between books, plus a few for the years DV skipped, so she has to age quickly...

@@LordVolkov Agreed. The change of Alia not being the Barons executioner was the one choice I couldn't forgive them. Main hero kills main villain again. Not like we've seen that ten thousand times. It also ruins the bit where she becomes Abomination in "Children of Dune"(if we get that far) and(spoilers)has him guiding her from within. I could understand cutting Thufir and Fenring(who I'm sure Tim Blake Nelson was playing in that secret role), but the change just annoyed me to the point that I was just bored during the ending(other than the final duel). I was like "You could have aged her up. Said it was the body trying to be as skilled as the minds of what came before her. Anything!" TL:DR:Paul killing the Baron was the easy/lazy solution to removing Alia.

@@phousefilms It's a big missed opportunity to set up the life-extending properties of spice by having it accelerate Alia's growth, which I'm sure will have to be addressed to explain adult Alia while everyone else has only aged a few years after the timeskip between movies.

Have you guys seen the mini-series Syfy channel did back in 2000? Costumes and production were not as good as these, naturally. But storywise it follows the book closer than either this latest release or the 1984 movie. It was neat for me to see each version. I was not fond of the dropping Aila of the Knife as they did. I rather enjoyed it being HER that offed the Baron in the book and other versions. I understand why they did it, but prefer her involvement like in the book. I was also not fond of the changes to Chani regarding her opposition to Stil and her jealous girlfriend bit at the end of this. I SO much prefer her being able to see the need for the Paul & Irulian marriage. But she KNEW she (Chani) was the one Paul cared for. Book Chani was not a fool that up and stopped off in a huff out of jealousy.

Everyone comments on how odd the colosseum scene was visually even for black & white, the reason is that it was shot in infra-red which posed a few challenges to the makeup and wardrobe departments. In infra-red many tattoos show threw the normal makeup used to cover them, and some black fabrics do not appear black.

Messiah (Part 3) may never get made as we know it, because by the end of Part 2, they have clearly made changes and used specific quotes from the book showing that the characters are literally and knowingly taking one of the different paths than the one followed in the books. Describing the subtle differences of an 'alternate' future path that was not taken, and the film actually ends ON that path at the end instead. In an instant the readers know that a large number of important events and main stories from across several books are no longer possible. And the average moviegoer will have no idea it even happened, because they can only see the path they are on, as if the act of watching was itself some sort of meta commentary. Or he just wanted to throw a wrench into any attempts to follow-up his films(Children and onwards). But then again, most people don't get that deep enough into the series to know it starts being 'Real Fucking Weird' after that point.

In my opinion, Chani and Stilgar could have both had their belief and skepticism addressed without the extreme opposition they embodied. Both should've been believers by the time Paul survived the Water of Life. I love that she was more of a fleshed out character than the book, but not going over the prospect of political marriage to Irulan was a mistake ( jessica advocates for paul to marry chani in the book while chani is in favor of the martiage for legitimacy with House Corrino.) Also, from a strictly writing aspect of her character, she should not have been angry with Paul for doing what must be done to lead her people to victory right after she convinces him to go south and do that very thing.

One thing which I took to be a hint from the movie that the Harkonnens and Atreides are not so different in the grand scheme of things - during the gladiatorial fight, there are the creepy Harkonnen helpers; they use futuristic banderillos to weaken the prisoner - this fight is the equivalent of a matador bullfight (like Paul's grandfather). Hell, they even have bull-head helmets! The Harkonnens may be more celebrant in their repulsive excesses then the Atreides, but the two are effectively equivalent.

Prefer book version with Alia killing Baron Harkonnen. I mean, seriously...how often is it you see a main villain NOT killed by the main hero? It just was better. Tim Blake Nelson was an unknown role cut out(I still think he was going to Count Hasimir Fenring)and Thufir was also removed(though Denis regretted it). Feyd was the only saving grace of the film, the rest, I found poor compared to the source material(unlike #1). Just me though, I expect, so I am the odd person out.
