Yes. Denis did a masterful job of clearly showing that Dune is not some white savior novel. It is a cautionary tale about the cost of following a charismatic leader. You root for Paul but despair at what he becomes and where it all leads. And Timothy's acting! His speech at the war council was soul shaking. We know Dune will be nominated again for all those technical awards - special effects, sound, score, costumes, etc. But I think we may also see some serious contenders for acting coming from Part Two.
@thesprawl23616 ай бұрын
That scene is, IMO, one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. The creeping sense that Paul's power has suddenly lurched into a very dark place; the way he embraces how terrifying and alien he is to his followers - 'I am the one your mothers warned you about'. He is exulting in how utterly petrifying he must seem to the people in the cave - he is no longer some kind of Jesus figure with whom they can communicate on a human level; he is now something alien, awesome, that they must simply fear and obey. It is one of the most startling transformations by any actor. The twinkling eyed, soft, determined young man is replaced by a kind of supernatural demon. This film has the feel of a film that will be spoken of in the same breath as all-time greats in ten, twenty years' time, if it isn't already being spoken of in such a way. Villeneuve hasn't done anything anywhere near this brilliant. It feels like he was born to film this story. And I thknk part of the reason it's so great is that he's been able to see the other adaptations and learn from their mistakes. Lynch's version showed him what did and didn't work, what not to do, what kind of scale was appropriate, what to include and not to include. Ditto the nooughties version. It's like Michael Mann remaking LA Takedown as Heat - he learned from the earlier version and made something almost perfect, and Villeneuve has done the same.

Should be clear, Denis has said that he’s taking a break from Dune for a little while so he can explore new projects and he wants Timmy to get a bit older for Messiah. He also said he only wants to make a trilogy and doesn’t want to push past Herbert’s work in Messiah. Definitely the best choice
@codyt8216 ай бұрын
Being the juggernaut that this franchise is for Warner Brothers, I guarantee you that once Denis finishes Messiah, they will still look to another filmmaker to continue the franchise. With 6 books to pull from, it's simply too much potential money just sitting there for the studio to pass up on.
@kesh8626 ай бұрын
@@codyt821 The main problem is the degree to which the series gets weird after Messiah. Dune is a -mostly- straightforward hero's journey and Messiah is relatively follow-able tragedy about the cost of power/fanaticism. I think you could maybe stretch Children for a general audience (though concepts like the Golden Path, inherited memories, Ghola, etc would be a tough). Any book after that though? Probably just not possible.
@codyt8216 ай бұрын
@@kesh862 they would have to change a shit ton to make it something general audiences could accept and enjoy, yeah. And some things after Children of Dune I don't even see how you could even visually film it, it's so out there. But I could see them taking the bare bones of those stories and making major changes to create more films. I don't want that necessarily, but I just wouldn't put it past a film studio to do that, especially with the amount of money and critical acclaim this series is making for WB. Time will tell I guess. I'm excited for the HBO series, and am hopeful for Messiah. And I would even be down for a Children of Dune film. I enjoyed the SciFy miniseries back in the day, and would enjoy a big budget adaptation if done well. Beyond that, major changes would have to be made to make it filmable. You're 100 percent right, it gets very weird and esoteric. I like that stuff and it even gets a little too weird for me at parts.

@@codyt821 I agree, there's plenty of material that would play better on TV. The fandom, quite rightly, is pretty mixed on Brian's work. However there's no denying that they'd be easier for TV than most of Frank's. I can see the other School novels, the House novels, or the Caladan novels being good for TV. Butlerian Jihad novels are probably a little too hard/expensive given their expansive nature, but who knows. In the end, I'll watch all of them. I actually loved Christopher Walken as the Emperor. He played it so subtly. To me the feeling it invoked was a feeling that the Emperor is allowed to be normal because he has all the power (or thinks he does) while in contrast the Harkonnen are super reactive and fearful and their entire culture is the same because they live in fear of the Emperor, the Harkonnen are sorta like a catch-all as a representation of the other great houses, it's implied that even house Atreides has a checkered past, Leto's father was somewhat of a brute and Leto wanted to be the father for Paul that his father wasn't for him, which drew people to Leto because he cultivated a culture of trust, communication, community and loyalty making it easy to turn the Emperor against Leto who the Emperor saw as a threat to his power and authority and ultimately his safety. The Emperor is meant to appear as old, tired, with too much shoved onto his plate trying to walk a knifes edge and I think Walken did a phenomenal job. I also loved the touch that the Barren was trying to crawl to the throne while the Emperor, tired and haggard from a lifetime of holding that responsibility just ignores the throne which is nothing but a symbol, a stupid man's idea of power, and he addresses the real power in the room: Paul. Paul also completely ignores the physical throne because it's just a symbol. In the books when Paul does sit on the throne he sees the physical throne as nothing more than for a leader to hide how tired he is.

He was weak though. He caused most of his men and family fortunes to perish in the name of sympathy, when he could have been more ruthless to not only prevail over Harkonen but also tame his son's prophecy and prevent all the deaths and destruction. The central thesis of Dune has never been about "good vs evil". The depiction of the Atredes being "good guys" and the Harkonen being the "bad guys" was an intentional wool over our eyes to make the audience side with Paul, which ultimately is a head fake that makes us realize that we too were swooped in by the Messiah narrative and complicit in Paul ultimately committing mass murders. In the end, these were all feudal houses in very gray moral shades that all fought for survival and would do all they could to best the other houses. Leto being somewhat "humanist" ultimately resulted in his demise, and ushered in the rise of Paul who was worse than any Harkonen ever could be. If there was a "thesis", especially considering the later stories and the entire arc of Leto the second, was that sometimes our best humanist instincts don't really serve us well.

One detail that I adore, but see barely anyone pick up on (at least on first watch, cause it took me a second watch to figure out and a third one to make sure it's deliberate), is that Chani's tear was completely irrelevant to resurrecting Paul. As in the novel, Paul had already survived the Water of life, but got trapped inside his own mind, so at that point what's needed is just to give him another drop of the water of life for his body to sense it from the outside and him snapping back into reality. This is why when Jessica then wants Chani to resurrect him, Chani realizes that Jessica is basically just dragging it out purely so that "some stupid prophecy" about "Sihaya aka desert spring" can be woven into the moment to enhance the religious impact on the Fremen. So understandably, Chani instead of resurrecting Paul justifiably sets her concern aside and gets pissed at Jessica ("do it yourself") until Jessica literally forces her to participate in the mythmaking. It's freaking genius.

Yepp, simply a spot on reaction. This was me the entire movie ( 32:19 ) Would have been fun to see Count Hasimir Fenring. But alas, it is a movie and they have to cut out a lot. I thought the flames on the emperors ship was sand and wind interacting with shields. Again, such a good reaction!

A strong Emperor in his twilight years. Vitality lost, harried by the Landsraat, forced by his own survival instincts to slay his surrogate son to retain power, left with his only royal daughter who could not inherit the throne, relying on the toxic cancer of the Harkonnen to do his dirty work... I think Walken played the Emperor masterfully.

Excellent reaction! A New subscriber here. Btw: Chani, also known by her intimate name Sihaya (meaning Desert Spring), will be a concubine of Emperor Paul Atreides. With the Emperor, she mothered Leto Atreides II the Elder, God-Emperor Leto Atreides II the Younger, and Ghanima Atreides. The book ends: Paul: “I swear to you now,” he whispered, “that you’ll need no title. That woman over there will be my wife and you but a concubine because this is a political thing and we must weld peace out of this moment, enlist the Great Houses of the Landsraad. We must obey the forms. Yet that princess shall have no more of me than my name. No child of mine nor touch nor softness of glance, nor instant of desire.” Jessica: “Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she’ll live as less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives.”

In the book Paul sees one possible future in which he meets the baron and says "Hello grandfather". Villeneuve use it.

The scene after Paul's resurrection is, IMO, already one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. The creeping sense that Paul's power has suddenly lurched into a very dark place; the way he embraces how terrifying and alien he is to his followers - 'I am the one your mothers warned you about'. He is exulting in how utterly petrifying he must seem to the people in the cave - he is no longer some kind of Jesus figure with whom they can communicate on a human level; he is now something alien, frightening, unpredictable, that they must simply fear and obey. He can look inside their heads! Imagine a god who can look inside your head... You'd better believe in him as hard as you can, right? Otherwise he'll know, and who can say what he'll do to you? It is one of the most startling transformations by any actor. The twinkling eyed, soft, determined young man is replaced by a kind of supernatural demon, with a voice that can shatter buildings. This film has the feel of a film that will be spoken of in the same breath as all-time greats in ten, twenty years' time, if it isn't already being spoken of in such a way. Villeneuve hasn't done anything half as good as either Dune film IMO. It feels like he was born to film this story. And I think part of the reason it's so great is that he's been able to see the other adaptations and learn from their mistakes. Lynch's version showed him what did and didn't work, what not to do, what kind of scale was appropriate, what to include and not to include. Ditto the noughties version. It's like Michael Mann remaking LA Takedown as Heat - he learned from the earlier version and made something almost perfect, and Villeneuve has done the same.

Paul and Jessica were both utterly terrifying after drinking the Water of Life. I felt nothing but dread and unease during the climax of the film…on one hand, it’s exhilarating to see Paul get revenge on the Emperor and the Harkonnens, but you also have a pit in your stomach due to his radical change in personality. You just know it’s not going to end well even if you haven’t read the books.
@thesprawl23616 ай бұрын
@@keefriff99 Paul and Jessica were both terrifying, yes. Jessica's face after she comes back from the other side - 'the beauty and the horror'. I've not read the books, but I know people who have and I get the general shape of Paul's arc. Isn't it strange that you can watch a film, knowing exactly what's going to happen to the main character...yet still hope and desire for a different outcome? What's going on there in us when we rewatch a film we've seen hundreds of times and still find ourselves believing things can turn out differently? Some kind of confusion about free will clearly. We know the characters in the film have no free will but we still believe they can do differently each time. Now imagine being Paul, and being able to see someone's life stretched out like you or I can watch the story of Walter White. He can see they have no free-will, like we can see Walter White has none either.

Ever since seeing her as Rose the Hat, Rebecca Ferguson has scared the hell out of me. And *then* I realized I’d seen her before in a Mission: Impossible movie. I don’t quite understand how someone so mind-bogglingly stunning can also be a chameleon. Oh yeah… talent. Meanwhile, her portrayal of Jessica in the second movie out-Roses Rose. I mean, if you ever need to cast an utterly terrifying female lead, and you also want her to be drop-dead gorgeous, Rebecca’s your girl. And I have no idea, but I’ll bet she’s a sweetheart in person.

Just caught the meaning when Paul kills the Barron. - Stab to the neck (like the needle of the Gom Jabbar) - "You die like an animal." (the reason for the Gom Jabbar test) I swear, the pool of water that is this story just gets deeper the more you look into it.

13:05 I did the math. The average human body contains ~0.6 liters of water. 38 million dekaliters divided by 0.6liters equals about 633,000,000 people. And that's *just* in Siech Tabr.

I think the "flames" coming off of the Emperor's ship is its shield getting de-polarized from all the static electricity in the air due to the Grandmother storm that's coming. That's why Paul timed his attack with the storm because it will fuck up their shields.

My man I appreciate you waiting to see it so we get to see you react, but as soon as you are done with this go to the theater and see it there. I have seen it in the theater four times, on my 80 inch TV a few times, on my 32 inch TV a few times, and on my iPad Pro a few times. Nothing compares to the movies theater. Many of the scenes look a little less real on TV's as opposed to in the theater. One scene that comes to mind is when Rabban is fighting the fremen on the ramp of his Ornithopter. That scene is stunning in the theater. On a TV is looks a little fake. Anyway, it was a great reaction as always. I was excited to see what you would think, since you and your buddy are such massive Star Wars fans, you must be Dune fans too. Your my go to reactors on Star Wars and most stuff like it.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that, during that scene in Sietch Tabr, we actually hear Alia talk to Jessica - it's her who suggests targeting the weak ones. Someone else also suggested that she may be possessing Jessica.

I’m also in agreement that Christopher Walken as the emperor left something to be desired. I don’t think he gave a bad performance or even that his face is too recognizable, honestly I think his voice is too distinct and that when you hear him talk the first thing that comes to mind is “more cowbell” I wish they would have explored Kaitain a little more and we could have got a look at the golden lion throne.

I’ve now seen Dune: Part Two multiple times; 3 times in 70mm 15perf IMAX & 5 times on UHD blu ray….& it just keeps getting better. Words can’t even begin to describe just how stunning it was in IMAX. Even as a long time fan of the novel; which I first read back in the 80s, every aspect of this film is beyond what I expected. The eclipse looks so good at the start, because they actually managed to film a really eclipse; & then enhanced it with the second moon. Regarding the volume of water in Seitch Tabir (& correct me if my maths is wrong). A 70kg human holds approximately 42 litres of water. 42 litres = 42’000 millilitres 1 decilitre = 100 millilitres Therefore 38 million decilitre would equal water from approximately 9.5 million people Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune: Messiah is going to be something very special & we’re going to have one of the; if not the finest trilogy ever!!

I love how Javier Bardem played Stilgar. His religious beliefs start out funny but slowly become more tragic as the consequences of Paul's ascension for the Fremen start to become clear. In general I love how they managed to change the flow of the story to show how Paul is forced along his path without the benefit of his inner monologue. Btw, I think the Barons's logic with regards to Feyd-Rautha and the Emperor's betrayal of House Atreides is to setup a play for the throne down the line through the marriage of Irulan and Feyd-Rautha.
@Varzaak5 ай бұрын
The baron made perfect sense. Many of the houses have fought against each other for thousands of years. The movie also told you that Spice is why vast space can be ruled. Who ran Arrakis and was sole spice merchant? House Harkonnen.

13:10 To your question: The average adult body holds about 40 Litres of Water (including intracellular Water). To fill the pool would take at least 9,5 million Bodies - if they are able to extract every last drop of water. Otherwise we could be talking about any number between 10 and 75 million.

Both these Dunes were just amazing and I love finally getting a big box office view of Dune. But I agree, while I accept the changes it is the least faithful to the book (possibly needed for audiences). The Sci-fi version is still I think the most faithful as well.

I reckon Vladimir planned to have Feyd be a saviour figure, like in the book, except in terms of house Harkonnen itself. Vlad was willing to throw himself under the bus and take the blame for the attack (which would eveb hold under truthsayer scrutiny, because its the truth). Feyd could be the one to unveil this and do a sham prosecution for it, which would then give him righteous drive to support his claim of the throne. Vladimir is probably playing the long game though. He needs to amass more spice wealth after his treasuries went empty

01:25:20 I'm the opposite - this is exactly what I expected. Gurney is one of the Atreides' greatest fighters. Rabban is a cruel, clumsy coward who's only tough against his subordinates or when he has superior numbers on his side. Of course Gurney would make quick work of him.
