0:30 Feyd's little side glance here might actually be one of my favourite moments in the whole movie. In just a couple seconds you can see the gears turning in his head, and with so little dialogue it actually says so much about the kind of "loving" relationships the Harkonnens have compared to the other groups/characters. You'd think Feyd would be happy to hear that his uncle is giving him an entire planet to rule over, especially with the added promise of eventually making him Emperor. But instead his first instinct is thinking of all the possible ways this could be a trap.
@vincenzomarino9206
@vincenzomarino9206 13 күн бұрын
There's a couple of instances like this in the movie, showing how smart Feyd is compared to the rest of the Harkonnens. At that point of the story, being assigned to oversee spice production means being set up to fail: the Atreides were sent there to die, Rabban wasn't making any progress...
@superfanmusicmaker
@superfanmusicmaker 13 күн бұрын
@@vincenzomarino9206 And after what already happened in the arena, being put in charge of a known deathtrap like Arrakis certainly wouldn't assuage Feyd's feeling that his uncle is plotting to kill him.

In the book this is more explicit. The Baron knows Rabban is an idiot who will not only fail but also pointlessly brutalize the planet to the point he is utterly despised. The ruthless but smart and attractive Feyd will come in and pacify the rebels but seem like a liberator to the workers of the planet in comparison to Rabban, making Feyd not only a hero to the empire for protecting the spice but also popular and loved by the Harkonen’s and on Arrakis.

House Atreides' opposite philosophy under Leto I wasn't purely about honor, though. It was very more a means to obtain power and stay in power. That's one reason I love the Duniverse. Every House and social group is an exhibit on how groups obtain power. House Atreides under Leto I attempted to use liberation and respect to create convenient allies. House Harkkonen used fear and force. House Corrino used indoctrination. Paul used religion. All to control people.
@canti7951
@canti7951 11 күн бұрын
Everything every houses do is on behalf of the Empire, it's all for power. They have different means, yes, yet it's still all for conquest and dominance. In a way, you could say the Harkonnens are more honorable in a sense that they are transparent with their blatant brutality and barbarism. House Atreides on the other hand prides themselves with honor and goodwill whilst doing the very same crimes the other houses do. Imo, Paul the Messiah could've only come from such a family. True evil is that which believes itself to be absolutely good. Civilization is the highest form of barbarism because it does its crimes under the pretension of a higher good.

They better honor my warranty but I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy my next one elsewhere, as this is the fourth housemaid in the last three weeks. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be buying slaves from Giedi Prime. Jim at the poolhall keeps telling me I need to open up my wallet and just buy one from Selusa Secundus. Maybe he's right. Anyway, ran into Kevin on my way to work again and he won't shut up about his new baby blue luxury buggy that cost him a fortune. I really want to know why the color matters so much to him, seeing as how all of our buggies are black and white when we're outside. Is he stupid? Work was pretty mundane. Boss only killed 6 slaves today, so he must have been in a good mood. Either that or hung over from Na Baron Feyd-Rautha's Coming of Age party. It's so difficult to tell these days. Whatever. @Rekaert
@Rekaert 5 күн бұрын
@@hntrl8880 Physically he's bald and pale where in the books he's dark haired. In terms of character, he's much more potent in the film than in the books. In the books he's far less of a credible threat to Paul because Paul has Bene Gesserit training, and Feyd does not. Paul is the best fighter of the Fremen, the Fremen are more than a match for the Sardaukar, and any Sardaukar would be capable of killing Feyd. In the book, there is a threat to Paul in the room, but it isn't Feyd, it's a man called Count Fenring who is an 'almost' Kwisatz Haderach, and very dangerous. They took him out of the movie, and made Feyd more of a direct threat when really he's more of a speed-bump in the book. In the book Feyd is really eyeing the Baron's throne, and even making some attempt to assassinate him, but he isn't as clever or wily as his uncle, and would never openly threaten him, or he'd be dead in a heartbeat. In the book the Baron is enduring his insolence because he's the best of the two nephews with the most potential, but he punishes him to remind him who is in charge. Movie Feyd is much more openly threatening to the Baron. Also if anything, the movie Feyd is more sadistic and needlessly violent than the book Feyd, who is a bit of a poseur with ambition above his ability.

Another thing you can take from this scene is how... shallowly disciplined the Harkonnen truly are. In the pared they are all in synchrony, showing the military might... but in battle, true battle, against an opponent that shows even the slightest sign of being better than them... the fold. I still remember the stair scene in the first movie, the Atreides soldier are outnumbered, but the line is pristine, their synchrony of actions perfect, if the Harkonnen didn't had the Sardaukar in that moment, it would have taken at least ten times the Harkonnen number to kill those Atreides soldiers.

Feyd WOULD have died if he hadn't cheated (novel-wise). The Atreides soldier was conditioned with a word in his subconscious which would weaken him momentarily. Feyd was about to get a blade shoved through his chest when Feyd said the word 'scum'. This allowed him to cut the gladiator with the poisoned black blade (which was also against tradition as the white blade always carried the poison). The gladiator also killed HIMSELF before the poison could paralyze him before ending him in a far slower, more agonizing death. His last words were "One day...one...of us...will...get...you".

@Audisknfj
@Audisknfj 16 сағат бұрын
People say Harkonnens look like Third Reich Germany a lot, but I argue it’s even more like the Chinese. Let me explain: 1. Hair style: all Harkonnens are bald (or at least those who are fully Harkonnen blood), in Qing dynasty, all men must wear rat tail hairstyle, failure to do so may result in execution. 2. Concubines and their demeanor. When Vladimir and his chair rolled in, it is immediately recognizable that the formation of the concubine and the way they’re bowing is borrowed from Chinese norms. It should also be noted that in at least 2200 years of unified feudal China, there had been only one empress, and there was only one emperor who stayed monogamous 3. Artistic style. Giedi prime is monochromatic, just like water ink in Chinese art, which also only uses shades of black and gray 4. The celebration. Instead of clapping, the celebration is almost definitely a mutation from fist and palm, the way of greeting in China pre 20th century 5. The general oppressiveness of the planet. Before the late 19th century, there is no word in Chinese lexicon that translates to freedom, liberty, or self determination. The word for freedom, 自由, originally meant arising from oneself. It was not until the Japanese corresponded this into freedom/liberty in the 1870s that the Chinese started using it this way 6. The parades. Military parades have been a long tradition in communist countries, or countries that descended from a communist government. Here is a picture of Chinese military parade and tell me if they’re similar or not images.app.goo.gl/Dx9mWtmaEmK3ASGr9 6. Industrialization. The third Reich were surprisingly environmentalist. The Chinese on the other hand… you have heard of enough horror stories 7. Religion and government. We know Feyd Rautha’s birthday is a holy day, but one should also know that every single religion operating in China is under government surveillance. One funniest one was that Buddhist monks “are not allowed to reincarnate without government permission” There are a few more points I can point to, but I just think the Harkonnens in fact are similar to China more than any other culture currently on earth

I mean isn't this a leap? Why would the other houses agree that a Harkonnen would be emperor? Are they lesser than the Harkonnen? Because if they can be used as a leverage against the emperor they must be as powerful if not more than the Harkonnen, and I doubt they'd simply shrug it off and let Feyd be the emperor. Also I wonder if the Sardaukar would still feel loyal to the current emperor or immediately to the new

@stanpines9011
@stanpines9011 2 күн бұрын
The other houses are lesser than the harkonnen in the sense that the harkonnen are by far the richest house, even richer than the emperor. Meaning they could bribe other houses, pay for their support, pay for more munition for themselves etc. The only two houses that could really stand up to house harkonnen with skilled fighters would be the atreides, which are already assumed dead, and the emperor's sardaukar, which could maybe be defeated by throwing enough money at the issue.
