I think it depends on the person about the characterization and story (I've also seen in other reviews that you are either on board with Dune in general or not lol, so yeah if one didn't love the story in the book he/she won't really enjoy the movie's plot). I watched with some of my friends who didn't read the book and they found themselves pretty compelled with the narrative. I also didn't thought that Paul was better characterized in the book either, he's always this serious and stoic guy that gets himself caught in other people's shcemes, and found that the choice of scenes to adapt from the book was appropiate since the movie's format demands for a tighter vision and adding more scenes would've felt really dense and unpenetrable for audiences, since they are just learning so many new terms and concepts and characters (maybe an extended edition would be fun, but I think the screenwriters played their cards as best as they could as it stands). But yeah, I do think there are some problems (like in any movie) but again I feel like the narrative in general (book or movie) is something you really enjoy or don't and feel like the people that are into it will feel satisfied with how it turns out.

This is how i felt reading the Way of Kings for the first time. The whole 1000+ page first book is spent setting up the series and characters, so theres not much plot development until book 2. Giving Paul personality changes everything. He's a sheltered teenager who's never been allowed to make an important decision. He's an amalgam of his uncles and the Bene Gesserit, which is why he gravitates towards Duncan. He wants to have fun. Only after Leto's death does he become an individual, and even then he's tortured by the future. This informs many of his future decisions.

In a sense, Paul never becomes an individual at all. As soon as he's let out of his family's clutches, he realizes he already knows every single step he's gonna take. He is a puppet of his father, his mother, the Bene Gesserit, and eventually even his sister and son. @@DanielGreeneReviews changing that too much potentially puts the central theme of Dune at risk though. I’m not sure specifically what you would’ve wanted them to change or improve about his character, but it would’ve been odd to make such a drastic shift with a character whose probably one of the least interesting in the book. Especially since part two will be focusing on Zendaya presumably witnessing his arch seems like it would’ve ultimately been wasted. Making Paul more interesting, likeable, emotionally resonant, etc. in a “no messiahs” themed story I feel like defeats the purpose a bit. Like Paul is only interesting to the Fremen because of the Bene Gesserit not because he himself has done anything noteworthy. I'm a bit surprised that sound and music wasn't more of a focus of your review. Hans Zimmer's score and the sound design added an entirely different level to the story for me. I watched it on a good home theater and then in a movie theater and the second time I caught more of the cues that were telling the story in addition to the visuals. I really feel badly for anyone that doesn't watch this with a good surround system as no epic movie hits the same on a tv as it does in a theater, and this one has to be one of the best I've experienced. When I went to the theater to see it I went with 2 17 year olds who had never read the book and one of them commented as we were walking out that it was the best movie they had seen in their life. I think this film is great because it will take repeated viewings and you will uncover more in the performances, visuals and sound each time. I wasn't worried about caring for the characters because I never really connected with them in the books, I think of Dune as being a book for the mind to focus on instead of the heart, and for me that's not a bad thing as there are more than enough books that are there for me to emotionally connect with. I think this was a great film and having had no real expectations going into it (I really wasn't that committed to whether it would be good or bad) I just loved the world that the filmmakers created for me, spending time somewhere so unique and fantastic was a wonderful experience.

In Dune Messiah (Spoiler Alert)... the Fremen unleashed a jihad on the Empire in the name of Paul Muad'Dib and killed billions of non-believers in his name. So he becomes the worst villain after being a hero in book one. Don't know if audiences want to see that!

For me, personally, it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I really felt like so many persons involved in this film were just so passionate. Especially Denis and Hans! The casting, acting, cinematography, score, everything is just spot on. There has been scenes that was removed, approximately 15 minutes, to shorten it. I don't know which scenes but I would presume some worldbuilding and character building was involved

I had a BIG problem with the handling of Jessica. They turned her into a emotional dolt when she is a strong female lead in the book. I mean in the book there is a scene where she and Thufar go head to head and it is epic. She is amazing but you would not know it from this movie.

When I first saw this movie a couple of weeks ago I said that this was the most epic and most beautiful exposition ever put on screen, cause it kinda ends when Paul's journey is really beginning. It just leaves you hanging when you think, now it's gonna good. Not that the first part wasn't, far from it, but what I really wanted afterwards was an hour break to move around a bit and get myself something to eat and then immediately sit down for another 3 hours and watch the second part. And the worst part is that we don't even know whether that second part is going to get made.

Denis Villeneuve read Dune when he was a kid in Quebec -- he's said that he read it in French -- and in French, what came out in English as one big book, came out in French as two books: Dune I and Dune II, so I think he's pretty much following the books as he had read them.

I think the scene in the tent when he yells at his mom after escaping the Harkonnen needed to be more relevant, or significant in any way. In the the book it's clearly at that point when Paul accepts his destiny as the "hero" of Dune. His personality changes completely when he gets out of the tent.
@daneg3 жыл бұрын
not only where he "accepts" the role, but he drops guilt bombs on his mother for her (and the bene geserit's) role. like, they're both deprived of agency while actively manipulating the future. it's a fantastic (allegory? not really even an allegory) for the human condition. all this power actively change the future and still powerless and trapped at the same time.

Hero of Dune? It might at first seem that way but it will fade as he rises to power. His actions will cause more problems. I’m, like you, not a fan of Timmy’s performance. And it did felt like a long prologue. But like you said, the visuals are outstanding. The AMAZING costumes, the lighting, the atmosphere. It is Dune. And seeing the visual representation of everything I had imagined when reading the books was so incredibly moving in so many ways. My expectations will be different for part 2 I think but for now that's enough for me. But I do really appreciate the conversations about the film, which are by the way incredibly respectful, and Villeneuve himself took a very respectful approach with the whole thing in my opinion, it just feels like we’re all very eager to respectfully explore this world together and I think that’s beautiful. Also, Oscar Isaac is perfection. Also, I’m really frustrated we didn’t get to see the guild navigators, I will not rest properly until I see Villeneuve’s version of them, I know they're gonna look amazing !

you comments are your own and we can respect that. i give it a 9 in total because you are looking at half the material for a composure which is meant to be complete. my main complaint to this movie is that it was not long enough and i can tell some factors and longer scenes were cut out or down to flow the movie along. overall this was a roller coaster of a movie to push past epic movies for past the year of 2020. i will watch the movie probably 3 to 4 times over as i am sure part 2 will be supported and pushed out. this movie really does need to be as long as it needs to be so all can shine and the awe of the movie can be shown. the AWE of it all is suttle and just stunning. the music snaps it to a deal.

In the movie stilgar says that he should not play with jamis but it is still pretty easy for Paul to win (unharmed). I think the difficulty on adapting an epic, especially this one, is that the world comes first. You have to see the world, become invested in it, and then the characters become realized into that world later. The characters almost exist entirely to facilitate the world and the drama within it. Unfortunately, with a book as sprawling as Dune, that means either a 2 part movie, or 7 hour single movie, which is impossible. Dune might have been better as a miniseries, but then the budget might not have allowed for such a cinematic feel. I truly think that once the second movie comes out, it will feel complete, and viewing both parts back to back will be the ideal experience.

That’s interesting that you didn’t care for Paul in the movie. I wonder if it’s because I never read the books, but I actually liked how he was portrayed in this. That’s a little vague, but in the spirit of your review I’m trying not to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t watched it yet. *Edit* I’ll add that I too love the pacing here because I love the aesthetic for this movie, and I feel like it really gives the beautiful world that they brought to life room to breathe.

And I understood then why they choose this direction and what to show on this first part. They'll explore the characters in more depth in the next one, but I see why they left many concepts unexplored yet

As a non-Dune fan who wouldn't know what I was missing anyway, the only suggestion I can give is that I was VERY satisfied with Paul because of the deliriously child-like love he had for his manservants and that if they had focused MORE on Paul having visions of JAMIS and less on Zendaya's character, then the impact of the last duel would have been so much more impactful. Narrative wise, this story seems like Paul THINKS he just has to get to Jamis, his next friend. A mentor, someone who will teach him The Way. He just lost A LOT of men in his life, more than the usual epic hero. And that ending? OMG... Imagine Neo thinking everything will be alright as long as he stays besides Morpheus, and then he kills him. Imagine Arthur accidentally killing Merlin. Imagine Frodo being destined to kill Gandalf. When you realize, as Paul also begins to realize, that his visions are only of possible futures and therefore the mentor whose advice helped him get to the future where they met will actually be an enemy he must kill, that's deeply sad, as well as cementing the sci-fi point. I know Zendaya and her character are a big deal. But as a movie, it would have made more narrative sense for Paul and us to have seen more of Jamis so that our expectations of his place in Paul's life could have been entirely dashed.

I would've enjoyed more of the subtle politics. The pacing was fine, I liked it, but the emotion when everything was falling apart was lacking bc they skirted a lot of the subtle politics that immerse you in Dune (THE DINNER SCENE. CMON. I think just having that scene would've helped tremendously).
@Paradox-dy3ve3 жыл бұрын
I understand having that experience. I didn't feel a ton of primary color emotions for the people in the movie. But personally, I still walked away totally satisfied. I don't know why. I think, for me, it was the ability to lose myself in the world and contemplate larger than life ideas. I mean, the world really felt as if I could reach out and touch it... Also the invented cultures and religions of the world were amazing to see visualized. I could feel the spiritual significance of Shai halud as if it were a real religion, you know? The Fremen culture felt real, and the Bene Gesserit felt real. idk I personally don't think Dune's appeal ever had much to do with the personalities of its cast. But I honestly think there's a lot of subtlety injected into this movie that adds emotional depth to the characters. They feel like real people but it's like I'm just not privy to pry inside their mind and see what's up. In the book we were always in someone's head but the movie doesn't have that luxury. But your experience is totally understandable. That's why I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 😁

I actually always liked Paul's sorta blandness. It helped to drive home his utter lack of personal agency despite becoming "all powerful". It's like Paul could've been anyone. Literally. He just happened to be the guy born at the right time from the right bloodline. There were other candidates and it would've likely happened eventually. He can't be written as an "everyman" because he is very much not, but the blandness works. He is his background, he is the culture he assimilates to, he is the power he inherits and develops, and he is his fate. Him as a person? It's an after thought.

I quite liked Paul as presented, but then it was a combo of his first scene being waking up and the first teenage pushback against what’s being asked of him, “I just woke up” hammering down that important theme of the sleeper awakening. I thought it was pretty clear we were focusing on this aspect of his character, and he has only just had his coffee by the end of the movie. That said, it doesn’t surprise me that you might be sleeping on Paul. Also, I will say the positive father-son scene in the graveyard was nice. We don’t get enough of such moments these days.

@daneg3 жыл бұрын
You should really read past the first book for the plot "twist." It's a legit trilogy (like LotR); all three books are required for the true beginning - middle - end. Stopping at Dune might give the wrong kind of "wrap-up vibe." At least get to Messiah for the "oh. ok. yeah. this isn't over." feel. Children of Dune (book 3) sews-up the Dune and House Atreides arcs. I haven't read past book 3 of WoT, but from what Daniel Greene says about that series, that's when the "twist" happens in the series. Dune is similar.

I think Paul was perfect in this movie, he's supposed to be frustrated, introspective, and quiet, his life isn't his own and he's stuck living it. Timothy got across the difficulty of Paul's situation really well. He isn't a standard protagonist, he's a deconstruction of that and I really liked the way they dealt with it. The book is pretty detached (I think because that was very much the style in early sci-fi) and I think the film sticks to that, for good or ill. It's not particularly over the top emotional which I see as a faithful good thing. That's my two cents anyway!

The main difference I didn’t like was in my mind Jessica was more stoic from her training but it seems every scene she’s in in the movie she’s overly emotive and sobbing. There was only one scene in the book I remember where she doesn’t have full control of her emotions but in the movie she’s sobbing in most of the scenes.

Movie was brilliant. They need to start production on Part 2 now.

Unpopular opinion (I haven't read dune) but I thought the first 45mins of the movie was boring as hell! Rest of the movie was great though.

Agreed that the dinner scene should have made it into the movie.

I think it’ll be a deleted scene, or in the extended cut for the home release

@@joaodelgado6696 yeah but I think that could be explored more in part 2 since Hawat will still be alive and we haven't seen him be captured.

@@aliturk6692 yeah but his reasoning will have to be explained or done in flashbacks not as natural as showcasing that discussion. I think the film would have benffited form more character interactions that fleshed out each other's motives. Yueh's betrayal was also rushed imo, and his reasoning in the book is a little more complex since he doesnt really believe his wife is alive but is rather pure revenge
