Listened to Dennis Villeneuve talk about this scene, he described that one of his favorite parts of the scene is the room. It's filled with books to the brim to communicate to the viewer that in this future, machines and technology serve an entirely different purpose and are far less important than we'd think.

We see our first glimpse of the intense power within him, the power that the Bene Gesserit have been trying to cultivate and harness for thousands of years, and the most awesome and terrifying thing about it? The Reverend Mother can see it too and catch a glimpse of the glory and horror Paul Atreides will unleash upon humanity, which scares her. Because it is not part of her order's grand design, because, at the very last, crucial step in the plan, Jessica changed things irrevocably. Their Savior has come at last, and he is beyond their ability to control.

I think something that really highlights how much power Paul has is not only the initial reaction of pain and crying out, it’s the slow silence as he gets himself under control, and slowly meeting her gaze as he gets his grip. Even behind the veil I could feel almost a stutter in her motions, like she genuinely was not expecting him to succeed. She also seemed to think that his previous posturing and audacity in her presence wasn’t for nothing after all. Another thing I want to point out is how his mother is comforting herself outside the door, “fear is the mind killer”, and how her speech to empower and calm herself is overlapping Paul’s scenes. He’s probably thinking of the same thing, given that she’s probably taught him that, and it’s giving him the same empowerment and helping him calm down.

Jessica was supposed to give Leto a daughter who would've been married to a Harkonnen, but she defied the Bene Gesserit orders and gave him a son. The Kwisatz Haderach was supposed to be the son of Jessica's and Leto's daughter and the Baron's nephew - probably Feyd.

0:38-One thing I noted about this bit, especially considering the Dune novels were the original inspiration for Star Wars, is a comparison between the Voice of the Bene Gesserit and the Mind Trick of the Jedi Knights. The latter ability is subtle and soft, used to plant a suggestion into the weak-minded's minds, making them think that it's their idea, and there's no need to confront the user about it. The former is hard and blunt, a direct command made to the person on the receiving end. They know right away that this is someone else's design, that this is not their own will but that of an old, wise, and powerful being, and before you can even try to resist or fight back: most times, it's already too late.

In the books the voice can be a subtle and delicate thing. It is a complex process and is varied in its applications. In the books it is given far more attention and thought than can be afforded in film, and I acknowledge it is an effectively immovable limitation on the film. This is of course a shame, the way Jessica uses it to destroy her Harkonnen captors is infinitely better in the book for example. There we see that it is something far more intellectual than simple magic. But yes, one aspect shared in book and film is the voice can be applied to manifest absolute authority. Here the reverend mother applies it by snapping and sneering to startle and subjucate Paul, if but for a moment.

I don't mind it too much since the book version of the voice would be impossible to adapt because it's basically just having speech 100. BGs are basically always using the voice to subtly get their way, it's only blunt if they intend it to be blunt, which most of the time they don't. By the end of this test, she's gone from smug superiority all the way to pure terror, and you can tell that it's only thanks to her position and years of training that she doesn't gibber like a madwoman when he glares at her, enraged, yet in full control of himself. I saw this movie in IMAX, and when I tell you this moment at 0:38 made the theater shake, I mean I'm sitting towards the back of a theater about the height of a two-story house, and it felt as if I was in the epicenter of a tremor. One little detail that I absolutely love is the power of the litany against fear over Jessica. Her son is being tortured 20 feet away and she's naturally a terrified sobbing mess. She begins the litany and immediately her face drops back to calmness, and by the time she's repeating the first line you can see how much of her fear has dissipated. A beautiful early example of the power of mantras, holy words, and the individuals power over their own mind (obviously mirroring Paul in the next room) which are all of course huge themes of the text

I love how the degree of power of the voice is shown. Paul is still a neophyte and not as strong. Be can command but not very well. Jessica has had more training and she can call upon it with ease. The Reverend Mother however... she's on a whole other level.

This scene single handedly convinced me to read the books. I loved the movie, but when I rewatched it with my dad he was telling me about the internal monologue the Reverend Mother had in this scene, and that showed me just how much depth there is to this scene that you don’t get in the movie. I think the scene is perfect, and I would never want them to overexplain it, but I want to go into future scenes knowing the details from the book so I can appreciate perfect scenes like this even more.

One of the greatest scene i have seen in a cinema. This movie as a whole was a masterpiece. Maybe you don't understand the significance of every events, or details, if you haven't read the books, but it still draws you in. By the way, saw it in "4DX" in the movie theater (3D + moving chair and wind, and rain) : incredible experience.
