On the one hand, this is absolutely amazing. On the other hand, this is also a reminder that I haven't studied Arabic since I left uni and I really need to get back to that at some point.
@BlackEpyon3 жыл бұрын
I'm just glad the movie stayed true to the books and didn't shy away from the Arabic/Islamic elements in the name of "wokeness..." whatever that is.
"Wokeness" Of course, that buzzword makes its appearance here too. Exhausting. I'm waiting for the day people realize that America is not the world, and they can just survey the world's different people and cultures with a rational mind, rather than scream because something is not 100% revolving around and catering to the majority of Americans. By virtue of its roots, Dune _is_ actually ""woke"", but woke has next to no meaning and to attempt to define or apply it further is reductive to the human experience and art itself.
@BlackEpyon3 жыл бұрын
@@woodychelton5590 Perhaps, but there's also the (generally) Left desire not to cause undue offence. They already swapped the word "jihad" with "crusade." A bit disappointing, but most people don't know that the word also means "spiritual struggle," not just "holy war," and that can change the context of how it's used, so it may be excusable.
@BlackEpyon3 жыл бұрын
@@chronotiger Life is far too complex to discard nuance. I consider myself a member of the Left, but even the Left has it's excesses. "Wokeness," is one of them.

Yeah, I’m glad that she went out in style and managed to take a few Sardaukar with her. I’d love to see a prequel TV series or something about her, how she became such a respected person of importance on Arrakis. Maybe it could have something to do with how her work as an ecologist intersected and conflicted with the politics of Arrakis and the Imperium? I’m interested in this mostly because the sole reason I’m here in this fandom would be the sandworms. They’re really the core and crux of the action, being the source of spice, and yet they barely show up. (Which, I will admit, help lend to their gravity and presence when they do).
@BlackEpyon2 жыл бұрын
@@junoniathesilkwing4221 The genderswap works just fine for Dune because you never hear too much of his backstory. The prequel "House" trilogy books have Kines in a much more "masculine" role than the first Dune book did, you the writers might have to get creative. Not saying it can't be done, but it would piss a lot of people off.
