True. Definitely an odd and questionable bit of dialogue in an otherwise great intro, but used as you say might flesh things out better; it would be reminiscent of the occasional snippets from Princess Irulan at the start of chapters in the book :-D Hell, the continuous breaks in the flow of the story it would create would even simulate the experience of reading the novel for the first time and having to flip to the glossary at the back every so often to understand the terms being used.

I agree that this is pretty outstanding. It amazes me how well the music variations adapt to the speech: it starts with a smooth background sound that enables focus on explanation; then a dramatic pause for the next paragraph; then it raises a little when talking about the importance of the melange, which will be the mobile (nearly macguffin) which drives the movie; then after another dramatic pause, the music acquires a religious touch sounding like a great organ in a church when this princess talks about the fremen and the prophecy and Arrakis, 'also known as... Dune' and then we get to the landscapes of Dune with the main theme sounding the lowdest. It's really fascinating, how can this be done and fit, it's perfectly orchestrated

There is something very intriguing about the atmosphere Lynch has created with this movie and I think you will appreciate it more when you haven't read the books, because the "gaps" in the lore only add to the mysterious feel of the movie imo.
